Hey man sorry I didn't call last night. I wasn't able to get over to measure the tires after all. Anyhow, this morning I got to thinking that the current Kuhmo tires might be different than my six or seven year old tires, so you'd probably want to mount one and measure it before buying the whole set.

That one looks like it might be for real. Volcano buggy???

Some years ago there was a sweet old GLF sitting in an alley in North Seattle. It was like a fully loaded GF...had air conditioning and everything. Cool how they mounted the mirrors way out front on the fenders. I left notes on the windshield but never got a response. Poor thing got vandalized to death and finally hauled off. Would of made ya all sick.

Hope you get to work on the rotary. That 13b should make a lot of HP.

who grabbed the LSD @ lynnwood PAP on FRI or SAT??
Mike W replied to gunslinger's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well it wasn't me but I still feel a bit smug about that time I beat Ed to a LSD and disk brakes off a turbo wagon at P-a-P years ago. Man that was sweet laying there pulling the diff when Ed walks up dismayed that he got out-swooped! -
When or if it ever makes it's public debut, I hope the event catches everyone off guard and generally makes a big splash in the Subaru community. It's gotta be ULTIMATE!

Maby I shouldn't have gone through that puddle
Mike W replied to swervey87gl's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey that's a great story and well written. I like how you work in the carpet cleaning bit there at the end. I wonder if the puddle adventure could be tax deductable as a buisiness expense, you know like as an advertising stunt for carpet cleaning? If you can get those carpets and seats clean, you're a better carpet cleaner than me. After my first float and sink puddle adventure, I had to rip out the carpets and tar mats and bleach the floor boards and it still smells like mud and bog water. But it's replacing bearings that took the fun out of it for me. Throw out bearings, rear main seal, wheel bearings, diff bearings... After the second or third time changing bearings the deep water submarine action just wasn't as fun anymore. Boat trailer bearing grease is the way to go. -
How about using a EA81T or EA82T crossover pipe like Qman did? No more pipe hanging down under the engine that way. I believe Ken used a turbo crossmember but you could also cut and/or bend it to give clearance. Just an idea...

Back yard ghetto cylinder head resurface

Good info for those that didn't already know this stuff. How about adding the highlights of this thread to the Ultimate Repair Manual? -
I have a 38/38 on the stock EA81 in my Hatchback. It's mounted on a modified SPFI intake with a custom adapter plate. Works great in my opinion. Anyone else tried the syncronous carb option?

Subiesport Mag 'old school' Project

That $1000 race budget is a bit tight but I'm sure people will "donate" all sorts of parts etc just to get their name painted on the side of the car. If you're not neccesarily racing to win, how about a '81 Brat? Gen1 cool yet it should have a EA81 engine. Don't know if it's still for sale or what condition it's in, but there's been one on Craig's for $750 tp://seattle.craigslist.org/car/ Seems like I read somewhere that a slower car or even a 2wd car is good for learning rally skills? (Shrug) I bet any early Soob will be plenty exciting at 100+mph on a snowy road in the middle of nowhere. Anything for sale on Ben's Rally Page? -
Questions about snow driving/snow tires
Mike W replied to pinksoda3's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Much wisdom there! Definitely sounds like a guy who's driven Snoq. alot. One thing I'd like to add, is to go up the hill insanely EARLY at all cost. I mean like 6am or so. That's when the hardcores head up and you'll be less likely to get hit by some out of control nutcase. No matter how painfull it is getting up early it's still better than sitting in a traffic mess or wreck. And when you get to the mountain you'll have and easy time parking, plenty of time to hang out in lodge swilling espresso, get the first chair up the hill and make the first tracks in all that powder (yeah right.) About playing in parking lots. Do it every year to refresh your skills. Just watch out for those buried curbs. I'm sure no one here has ever encountered snow covered curbs right? Bring a camera or video cam to document all the carnage you'll see on the road. -
CASH In case you need a tow or whatever and the bottle of wiskey doesn't work as payment.

hi, my names tony, im a welder addict
Mike W replied to archemitis's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
To fend off the addiction, I would definitely not buy a large shop in a rural area that just happens to be wired for 3 phase power, has a crane, hoist, mill, lathe, sheet metal tools...etc. That might be asking for trouble. (Not that I've ever fantasized about that.) Also, I should warn that lurking on the newsgroup "sci.engr.joining.welding" can give a person some really sick ideas (and useful information.) Another thing to avoid is "Ernie's Massive Metal Links List." lihttp://www.stagesmith.com/Metal-links.html I have somehow resisted buying welders so far, but they call my name constantly and the cravings and lust steadily increase. -

Howdy Ken and everyone. Yeah the forcast is claiming that there should be lower temps by the weekend, like in the 30s here in the lowlands. Should make for icy or snow up there. It's unlikely that I'll be able to make it. But just in case I can but run late, can you give a specific place where folks will be hanging out when they're not conifer hunting? Like maybe a spot on the map or a landmark that would show up on the Gazatteer map or something to that effect. Thanks. -
Shocks spec'd for Landcruiser FJ60's should work for a 4" lift. That's what I have on my Hatch with 3" lift blocks and a clocked torsion bar. It goes short enough to rub the tire on the wheel well and stretchs out longer than standard axles can extend. I did have to swap over that bar at the top of the shock where it goes through the rubber bushing but it wasn't a big deal. To make the axles stretch out longer you can put late model EA82 cups onto your EA81 axle shafts. That'll allow about another 1.5" of axle stretch without hyperextending the joints.

A few minutes from Snoqualmie, WA there's a fun gravel pit that's kind of like a skate park for Subarus. It's been closed off for years but was open when I went out to play two weekends ago. It's located on the North Fork Snoqualmie River Road, just a mile or so from the gate and end of the paved road. This is like straight west of Mount Si, if that helps. Not a huge play area but a fun detour if you're in the area and need a hill climbing fix.

Replacement Driver Seat Foam ???
Mike W replied to 4RnrRick's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've actually rebuilt the trashed old foam on an EA81 style seat but only because I had the perfect foam available. My old job was building custom wheelchairs and seating systems. So I had a bunch of cool foam pieces designed to stabilize patients in their seats. So I took these foam wedges, inserted them into plastic bags (to make them slippery) and slid them inside the fabric covers on my old car seat. The result was a drivers seat that custom fit my butt and molded around my torso like a race seat. Looked really funky but with a seat cover no one else even noticed. Worked great until I upgraded to XT6 seating. Hey uh, this doesn't help Rick, but speaking of seat covers... The north Seattle Grocery Outlet store has APC brand ricehonda style seat covers for $4.99 each and matching floor mats for $3.99. They are black with Red or blue graphics.
