Two rims welded together might work but the extra weight would suck. And if you're building wheels then how about cutting the Subaru centers out and weld them into ATV rims like they did on the Rhino Buggies. I'd swear I've seen 13" x 12" x 26" tires on some ATV parts website or catalog.

Here's a massive collection of links pertaining to fabrication, welding, machining, ...everything metal. The site belongs to a master welder dude in Renton, WA Read his disclaimer at the top. He ain't kidding, there's more reading here than anybody has time for and no telling what sick subaru modifications you might come up with. They weren't kidding about it only snowing down south. Today I took the Legacy and woman up to Darrington and drove to the top of a 4-5000 foot mountain/hill. There was ice and frost but not a single flake of snow. Totally dry up there. The only snow was way high on Whitehorse and other major peaks. Sunny but chilly weather followed by a kickass sunset. Winter is definitely coming this year. Probably. Maybe.

Yeah, radiators.com and order by phone but ask for the "internet price." To get the 2 row version, I had to order it for a '91 Loyale turbo. I also needed to use a '91 style upper rad hose but other than that it bolted right up to the '87 RX. The clutch fan was a dang tight fit so I installed an electric fan from a EA81 car. Tex should be able to explain how to wire it to run off a thermoswitch and relay.

I like the idea, especially if it opens the hood to the full-up position. Maybe try it first at the junk yard to get the bugs worked out?

That is a really good explanation. And combined with a simple diagram it'd be a good addition to the lifting FAQ on the Ultimate Repair Manaul.

Oh what silly fun gadgets these are! Like we really need to know how tilted the car is? But hey for the car with gobs of gadgets these things rock. Now what we really need is an aircraft gyro so we know for sure that we've finally rolled the damn thing! "Yup honey, look at the guage...we're upside down." On Gen2 cars/brats the tilt-o-meter fits pretty good on the passenger side of the dash. I'm thinking of cutting into my dash a bit to mount it there. They also fit down on the parcel shelf but you can't see it there. Mick, do you have any photos of it mounted to the mirror?

Good to hear PK and company is ok. Man it must really suck being down there. Looking at the satellite photos I wonder how you can even breath with all that smoke. Maybe normal smog builds up a asthma tollerance or something huh? Anybody heard from Steely Del??? I got an email from him a few weeks ago but the computer puked and I lost it before I got to reply and now need his email addy. Anybody know what it is? Thanks.

Mmmmm, smell the composting bogwater tea! Carpets, padding, and maybe even the tar pads gotta come out. Wash the floor pan with soapy water and then rinse with bleach water solution. A few days and or nights with an electric space heater in the car should dry it out. Pressure wash the carpets, drip dry in a warm place or maybe try a commercial tumble dryer. You may never completely get rid of the funk but the faster you clean and dry things out the less mildew issues you'll have down the road.

I had a '84 GL10 parts car that a previous owner had managed to dent the oil pan through the skid plate. But man they must have nailed that rock hard to do it. Like many retired Subes, that car was really riden hard and put away wet.

'87 RX Project Update (56K Beware)
Mike W replied to Subarutex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah Tex, the RX is lookin' real good man. I'm really liking what you've done with it and I'm very glad you got the car. That's partly because I couldn't afford the speeding tickets:-) Regarding question #2, about the MAF to airfilter adapter... It came from Home Depot and it was a row or two over from the PVC stuff in the drain pipe section. The adapter flange was a storm drain I think like you'd use in front of a residential garage door. I believe there was a green plastic grate that snapped on but I might be wrong about that. Anyhow it fit and flowed perfect with minimal effort. -
why dont people transfer titles?
Mike W replied to archemitis's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you send them via US Mail, use "certified" so you get a paper reciept proving that the state recieved the report of sale. Or better yet pay the extra $3 and do the report of sale at a licensing agency, again so you get a reciept. I had a guy drive a car I sold for over a year, then abandonned it. I had definitely sent the report of sale to the state but it never got logged in their computer. Not my fault but I couldn't prove that I mailed the damn thing. Missed a couple days of work getting myself out of that bind. Finally had to track down the SOB and take him forcibly to the license agency and made him transfer the title. -
If you're into mcguyvering, the seats in the Tercel SR5 cashmachine cars look kinda nice. They're a couple inches wider than EA81's but might fit into a Loyale without too much grief.

Hey that's cool that yer back and with a new rig. Funny how original owners nearly cry when you adopt their car. If you're gonna be over here on the hell side of the sound on a weekend, give a headsup and maybe we can have a gettogether deal like tomorrows garage day at Zap's. Say I've heard there's some jeep trails in the Dungeness valley somewhere. You ever checked them out?
-
It's looking like I'll be there. Any particular time?
-
I'm a "maybe" as usual. I've got a LSD swap I'd like to do too if I can swing it. Any trail run planned before you get that Ozzified 3" custom lifted bionic knee installed?

EA81 Hatchback with 3" BYB lift. I've got shocks spec'ed for a FJ60 Landcruiser. They allow an extra 2-3" of travel. I was hyperextending the rear axles but hopefully that will stop now that I'm running the extra-stretchy Rguyver mod axles. (That means means later model EA82 rear axle stretch joints on both ends of my EA81 axle shafts.) Seems to work so far but only time will tell.

Photos of the Hatch Patrol's Black Diamond Run
Mike W replied to ezapar's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey good pics there Eric. I want to thank you guys for going. I had a blast and now it's like I'm addicted all over again and jonesing for more. Maybe I should have told you guys about that Miller River Trail. It'd make a nice half-day type run if another trip is possible before the 27th. Totally opposite style terrain, all rock and very scenic river and leaves etc. The rest of you guys might want to check out Kanaskat if you get a chance. It's not huge or totally epic or anything, but it's fun to explore and has some interesting stuff. -
So it's just me, Zap, and Qman then huh? Anybody else want to join us? Guess Zap and I will be leaving North Seattle at 9am and will meet Ken at Four Corners around 10am.
-
Hey Rob, just bring that wagon along and dump it with all the other stolen cars on the trails. (Very much just kidding officer.) Hey speaking of the "old group"...how about Matt and Ralph? Are those guys still around and driving anything offroadable? If Kanaskat gets boring we can probably find some other stuff to do in the area. For example I spotted a trail by Ravendale that I think went onto the powerlines.

Doing the Kanaskat Mine Trails (down by Black Diamond)and then (maybe) moving the party to Evan's Creek for the afternoon. 10am (tentative) start time. Just posting a heads-up here so people see it. Please see the thread in the Meet and Greet forum for more info. http://usmb.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=46869#post46869

Black Diamond (WA) trail run maybe Sunday AM?
Mike W replied to Mike W's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Definite.Hah! There I said it. Looks like I'm good to "GO" for Sunday morning. Qman's plan of hitting Kanaskat first, then heading up to Evan's Creek sounds cool (though I'm probably only good for the first half of the day.) As for a meeting time, how does 10:00am sound? And for a meeting place, is Four Corners good or should we just meet on the trails? If it isn't raining and blowing too bad I'll proabably try doing some video. I've got a ziplock bag scupa suit for my camera so I'll risk moderate douching. -
LSD diff troubles: axle stub came out!
Mike W replied to Subarutex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I didn't do it man! In fact I never even touched that diff the whole time I owned it. Good luck! -
There was this '79 Brat: http://www.cascadeoffroaders.com/undercons.html A bit too radical for my taste, but uh well it's up there.

Black Diamond (WA) trail run maybe Sunday AM?
Mike W replied to Mike W's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Whoop it up ONE more time before surgury? No way man, that's not acceptable! There's gotta be time for a snow run up at Snoqualamie Pass or a trip to the cabin or Evans Creek or... Plans for Sunday are looking more promising. I should know for sure by Friday evening if I can go. Just thought I'd put it out there and see if anybody else is interested or curious. If it's a "go" then I'd suggest a 10am meet time at Four Corners (like last time.)
