Wanted Back Glass for Gen 1 Brat
RustyBrat replied to sancofw's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
if nothing else you can have some glass cut to fit since its flat -
Well for one I work my rump roast off at multiple jobs... and for two, the bug isnt mine. An older lady I know blew the engine up and the shops quote her around 4000 for a new engine and labor. I think thats bullshit, I guarantee I will have a new engine and anything else this car needs for less than 2000. She loves this thing, so im helping her out

What Transmission did I just buy?
RustyBrat replied to spicypeanut's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
what do you want for it? i may be willing to buy it from you if you cant use it -
took the brat to get some gas (first time since last November) and decided that the shifter is too low. so i lengthened it! had to cut and weld a few times to make it clear the blower box, but i like the curve. yeah yeah i know, shifter slop blah blah blah, but ive gotten pretty good at just guessing where the gears are if its too long, i can always cut it down.

havent been able to work on the brat much, about to graduate just getting to busy. i did help an old guy clean out his garage though and i just though you guys might want to check out what was in there! 1957 chevy bel air, 100% frame off restored, high performance 350 putting out about 375 horses. we got her out and dusted her off and took a drive out some empty roads, and damn is that car FAST.

I literally found a Brat

looks really nice aside from the hood pins, ive never quite understood that on cars like these, but each to their own -
Solution to speakers in a Brat - what forum ?!?
RustyBrat replied to Subaruist's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
just to clarify, i was not referring to lack of visibility when using the rear-view mirror. again i will say, however, do what you want. dont feel like you have to justify it to us -

well, i respect your opinion, but kindly disagree. in my experience (admittedly not much) the most important thing when driving is visibility, and i will never give that up in any way. thats why i will never have dark tinted windows, etc etc. BUT! each to their own, just make sure to post pics and keep us updated -

are you really willing to give up that much window space? seems a little dangerous to me personally. if i were looking for somewhere to mount speakers, i would simply cut into the inside of the b pillar, build a sealed speaker cup to fit in the hole, mount the speaker, and then throw the molding back over the top of it -
finally put hangers on the exhaust, worked out perfectly. still need to trim the exhaust, obviously. i had the local seamstress make me a couple shifter boots, so no more watching the ground go by through the floor! finally re-installed the 4x4 shifter, and im going to be modifying both the 4x4 shifter and the gear shifter so they are taller and easier to reach. btw, 2 shifter boots only cost me 8 bucks! i was pleasantly surprised.

I need your thoughts
RustyBrat replied to PDXsubaru's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
The weber is a good choice, as long as its a 32/36. Pick it up for 150 and you stole it. The shifters are always sloppy on these old ones, not exactly sure what can be done about it -
"Just EJ it" a different look at this
RustyBrat replied to tweety's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Many good points made, as always, and sticking with an ea engine may be the answer for some. However, an ea engine can only be pushed so far. You will never get a whole lot of power out of an ea engine without hugely expensive modifications. Anyway, and i know im goint to catch flak for this, its like i always say, do what you want and screw what everybody else says -
I have often considered putting a turbo on my ea71, but then i get into researching parts and the work its going to take to do it.... for me, it always comes back to the fact that i can buy an ej22 parts car and swap the ej22 and trans into my brat for cheaper (not to mention easier) than i could put a turbo on my ea71. also, the ej22 would give me pretty much double the power i have right now, whereas the turbo might increase it to what... 80hp? just my 2 cents
