1978 Subaru Brat
traded my rims for these, they are narrower than the others and have less that 4 inches of backspacing so i should be golden. got a free riding mower too, im ripping the trans-axle out of it for a different project... anybody ever heard of the old (1968-1971) PUG utility vehicles? its a cool project, maybe i'll start a thread in the off topic forum or something if you guys want me to.

Solution to speakers in a Brat - what forum ?!?
sorry to clutter but i just have to ask... are 100 watt tweeters really that unusual? i run a 6.5" 300 watt midbass and 2" 200 watt tweeters separated by a crossover in each one of the doors on my truck... i didnt think that was really that high of wattage

to weld or not to weld...
i appreciate the input so its not that big of a deal on pavement around town? i have access to a 220 mig welder, that should do the trick right? also, im going to be running some deep tread tires, does that make a difference?

to weld or not to weld...
i cant decide if i want to weld the rear diff on my 78 subaru brat. it has a 4 inch lift, and i run 27-29 inch tires on it. i primarily use it off-road, but it does see occasional highway driving and around town. if i weld the rear diff, i know it will help a lot off-road, but im afraid that when i drive in on pavement i will break axles or the diff itself. i know some people weld the diff, then remove an axle for street driving... but that sounds like a pain to do all the time. what are your experiences with welded diffs? should i do it?

ride height adjustment?
Some have adjustable struts yes, but its better to build toppers
-
ride height adjustment?
Rear only. You have to build angled strut toppers for the front
-
ride height adjustment?
remove the lock bolt, beat the torsion bar out with a hammer, clock the trailing arm in the direction you want, line up splines and force the torsion bar back through.

ride height adjustment?
what year is your brat, it makes a difference

1978 Subaru Brat
its my favorite body style oh i was going to say, my truck is very much an oddity. it had to have been custom ordered. it has every interior option, including rear air, except leather seats (thank god). so it is the silverado, but its ALSO the Z71, so it has a rear locker, higher rate springs (sits taller) and bilstien shocks (original btw). on top of all that, it is the heavy half ton, so even higher rate rear springs and overloads, and the 4l80e transmission (WAY better than the 4l60e). and for whatever reason, i have a 14 bolt rear axle from the factory. its very strange, i have never seen a half ton with a 14 bolt before. all in all, i have the best possible combination of parts for these trucks. i just got lucky!

1978 Subaru Brat
So... in case anybody was wondering... THIS is why the brat has not been progressing much. not that you guys want to see it cuz its CHEVY and this is a SUBARU site, but i hate all the chevy forums. yeah... they cost me a bit haha. a while back i found a free set of 3 90% tread 35s and 4 chrome wheels, so i figured just order 2 more and it will be good. alas, as i was having the 2 new ones mounted, i noticed the severe cracks in between the tread on the old ones, so i ordered 2 more new ones... but hey, i needed them. my old tires were dead. polished up the rims with an SOS pad, and BAM good as new! all told, $900 bucks. not bad for 4 brand new 35s and rims. i love my subaru, but hot DAMN i love this truck, its my baby.

Installing Engine and Transmission Together
this reminded me that i forgot to mention drain ALL FLUID from the trans first, then wrap a bag or something around the output on the trans.

Uberoo does have a point though, make sure you have somebody to help you.

Installing Engine and Transmission Together
i swapped the engine and trans out of my 78 brat into a 79 wagon, and the engine and trans from the 79 wagon into my brat without ever taking them apart. now, i know it may not be relevant because of the year difference but it was much easier than separating them in my opinion. the 78 brat has a 4 inch lift, so that was a breeze, the wagon was slightly harder. i had to unbolt the trans crossmember from the "frame" to give enough clearance for the engine to come up past the radiator support, if that makes any sense. in my opinion, try it.
