Looking for specs and feedback
nipper replied to Zberge67's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXGood you found us! And yes subarus really do not like lightened flywheels, they need that mass to run well. The opposed engine layout a lot of forces get cancled out and so does the kenetic energy. The stock flywheel makes up for that loss.

timing belt fixed and now whines

timing belt fixed and now whines
nipper replied to paulo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX850 is on the high side but not out of range. Wet the belt(s) with the car running and see if it goes away, If it does it is an over tight belt. Check you PS fluid level as that can make a noise like this too. Does it go away with the ac on? Does it match engine speed?

Justy wierdness
naa what fun is that, and i do worry because in the 20 plus years of pulling a wrench i have never seen this short cycling unless it was an AC issue. I am not fond of being called a worry wart, as I would never say that to someone here with an odd cooling issue (or there or any other board i am on even in jest). Now that said once the weather gets better I will dig into the other suggestions from here and there. And post what I find (which i have done in the past).

Steering Problem
nipper replied to blindedsnake04's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI know. But if the wheels are still bound up (ask anyone with real 4WD) it can be nearly impossible to move the steering wheel even when not moving. There needs to be a little give in the cv joints to flex when the wheels turn for steering.

Steering Problem
nipper replied to blindedsnake04's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX"When I go to make turns the steering gets real stiff and kind of jolts back" The kick back is not a power steering issue, it is a torque bind issue.

Justy wierdness
HEHEH you funny i don't even know where under the hood they would stick AC, thought in 1990 they did come with it as an option. If it had ac i would have gone there first. The justy board tells me to stop being paranoid, but I do not accept that as a valid diagnostics or option. I am not fond of that board. Man you should see all the real estate that is available under the dash. i can't remeber the last time i looked up under the dash and could actually see the firewall!

Fuel sending unit removal?
nipper replied to FlyDive2's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIt is like birthing a cow, carefully. Remove the bolts. Lift out the unit, then move it around, angle it, be gentle with it, but it will come out. If you are generally gentle with it you wont break anything as it is not fragile.

Steering Problem
nipper replied to blindedsnake04's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXit sounds more like torque bind and not a PS issue. PS issues show up when the car is cold in the morning or an obvious leak. When was the last time your tranny was serviced. Do all your tires match? Are they all inflated properly. What are the tires circumfrence.

Clutch dying?
nipper replied to axgutt's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXChange the PCV valve as it will take stress of the seals. Check all fluid levels. What kind of clutch was put in.

Justy wierdness
It did not do it before i replaced the carb, i think. But then again I had to rev the engine at 2000 rpm to keep the car running.

nipper replied to salve7's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI replaced the handle, license plate light barcket (which the handle mounts too) and all new bolts and screws. Everything was so rusted I couldnt get the lights out. It was about 35.00

2002 Impreza timing-belt tooth count
nipper replied to jdemaris's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXJust go by the timing marks. Tooth count is useless, as how do you use 0.8, 0.7, 0.5 inch teeth.

Justy wierdness
Well the (1989 31,000 miles original) Starts and moves under its own power. It is running rich, but with the rebuilt carb the fuel mixture is not adjusted yet. The oddness now is that the cooling fan short cycles all the time. The cooling system is full. The heater puts out hot air at 138 degrees F but it seems like the radiator never really gets hot. I am suspecting (mumble) a stuck thermostat. This would have been so much easier with the carb off. This better not be one of those step one remove carb. That was a bioth to do. I can not figure out the constant fan short cycling. It does it no matter how long the engine has been running. Any thoughts?

What Have You Done to your Soobie lately? (Please post in here and keep it going)
IT IS ALIVE ! I started the Justy (with the rebuilt carb). Granted it started at full throttle so I have to address that, but at least it started.

Would like some opinions on whats wrong with my OBS
nipper replied to vincentmoy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWTF STOP EVERYTHING! What the hell are they replacing for 1620 ?!?!?! Do they have to make a late boat payment? Post a list of "everything" they plan on replacing, as something sounds really fishy.

windows won't defog & occasional smell of antifreeze in cabin
nipper replied to go_mo_bryth's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSHops here in NY run from 85-110 an hour. The highest non dealer price i hhve seen is 110 and thats what they get for reading codes too! My mechanic charges by actual time spent on the job, not book time.

That is the subaru official description even though it is an austrailian site. It has been translated since it was upside down.

Bad Gas Mileage
nipper replied to mccullough's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThhrrrptttt no pity here. Check tire pressures. CHeck the fuel rail hoses to the injectors. Did you replace the plugs? Smell of fuel is usually a leaky hose, most likely to a fuel injector.

AT Oil Temp light
nipper replied to sonofbuster's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYour fine. If it is an exteranl filter change it. If it is an internal filter leave it be as it is only a screen.

A nice shiney Carberator. Thsy had caps on odd ports which screwed me up for over an hour. None of the drawings or manuals refernced this one diaphram, ecept for an itsy bitsy tinsey wiency pic in the FSM showing it capped. i lost all the pictures i tool of the vac hose routing, and the sticker on the hood is useless, but i will figure it out.
