  2. Ill watch him today and tomorow. If i'm still concerned i will change his filter to a better one. i can't tell what the shop put on as the name is facing the engine. Thanks. nipper
  3. Yesterday after not using Blu all day, i pulled him out of the driveway and onto the street to wash and polish him (50 feet maybe). After a hour or so pulled him back in. He started normally sounded normal etc etc. This morning started him and he sounded like he had no oil in him. Scared the heck out of me (only 40K on the engine). After a minute the sound went away and all is normal. Blu got an oil change last week and all i can think of is maybe the oil filter check valve got stuck? Oil is full. Blu doesnt leak. 1997 OBW. i'm just perplexed. nipper

  5. Usually the higher the performance engine, the smaller the gap. As the air fuel mix is compressed, the higher the compression, the more resistance there is for the spark to jump the gap.   6. tsk tsk tsk gross, you were almost correct. Todays plugs come pregapped from the mfg, becuase the porclin around the tiny electrode, as well as the the electrode tab can be very brittle, and easily damaged if you try to gap them (especially with exotic metals). Do check the gap when you get them, but if they are the wrong gap. you may have gotten the wrong plugs, or they may have been dropped. a very slight tweek is possible, but anything beyond that may be risky. nipper
  7. Well lets see..... O2 sensor affects: Emissions Gas mileage Driveability Catalytic converter life/performance. Not chainging it saves you less then 150 bucks short term, but can cost you 5 times that if the cat gets damaged. Its the nose of the fuel injection system. Without it the car can not tell if it is running at its most effecient. The emission control system will never go into closed loop, meaning it will always run off preset program paramiters meant for cold start-up. Gas mileage may drop as many as 5mpg. Get it replaced with one from Subaru, dont cheap out with aftermarket, otherwise in a month or three youll be back blaiming subaru, and not the cheap part. nipper

  9. Understand how sesnors work before you start experimenting. The knock sensor is a pizo-electric device, like a microphone (which it is essentially). It listens for knock, and when it hears it it will generate a sharp AC signal and send that tiny ac voltage to the ECU. It needs a solid mechanical connection to the engine to operate. Since there are millions of these things on the road, just bolted to the the block, i would not do it. There are no electronics in the sensor, so it would have no value. Usually these things just fail due to age. Quartz itself is fairly heat resistant nipper

Counting gears can drive you batty on computer controled trannies Between lockup being available in every gear, and the fact that they now engage two gears at once to smooth shifting, you can loose count. It still sometimes gives me a knot in my stomach on the 2-3 shift as sometimes it feels like a slip, but its actually 2nd and 3rd engaged, the TC unlocking, and the ignition shutting off for a split second to make for a smooth shift. http://www.endwrench.com/archive/sysdrive.html will tell you someplace in there exactly how your transmission operates.
  11. You my friend may have an issue. The tranny uses the speed sensor, TPS sensor, and MAP sensor to figure out whats going on, (there are others but these are the main ones for shift points). I am suspecting that your tranny can not read the manifold pressure. This would tell the tranny that it is under increasing load, and that it should down shift. It is also possible that you may need a tuneup (plugs pcv valve especially), as a baseline, since that does affect manifold vacum. AURGH! i cant open my manuals on the laptop, otherwise i would look up the trouble tree for you. nipper
  12. I'll attack these one at a time. Your car is fine. Change the transmission fluid if it has not been done in 3 years/36K miles. Subaru is a real 4 speed automatic with a lock up torque converter. The TC can lock up whenever the car decides its needs to, and not alwaysfor the same reason. The lock up TC will be very subtle on the tach when it occures. Now sometimes for reasons only know to subaru, it will hold 4th No Lock for longer then i think it should, what i do then is just take my foot off the gas and let it lock up. It's extreemly rare for a sooby TC to fail where the mechanisim for the lockup in the TC will not work (excluding SVX). Usually thats a solenoid failure. The clutch in the TC is what is called a wet clutch. Wet clutches usually last beyond the life of the car, as it is literally soaked in fluid. the more common mode for a TC to fail is the sprag/one way clutch fails. When that happens the car can barely get out of its own way. Watch your gas mileage, as that would go down dramatically if your car is not going into lock up. Get the fluid serviced, as dirty oil can delay upsifts. nipper
  13. When Blu got hit by a deer, he came within a hairs breath of being totaled. What helped me was that Blu got a new engine 30,000 miles ago, that added to the value. Your not the one at fault here, so don't let an insurance company railroad you into totaling your car for only what may a few 100 bucks difference between the repair and the value. Talk to a lawyer, and do it now. nipper
  14. i'm just responding to this to get my foot in the door. i will post after the gym. i think one is a non issue, and the other is a real issue that needs more discussing. FYI 2.2L auto holds 8.4 Qts (call it nine) and a 2.5L holds 10 qts. I just flushed Blu and used a case of tranny fluid and it made a huge differnce in how he shifted.   18. oh man, the car did its job. It could have been far worse That was me stopped at a red light hit at 55 by a dodge stratus. Your car is very fixable, but look at the hood gaps. If they are still even the car can be fixed. Luckily babies tend to be part rubber, nature is good that way. Your wife will hurt for some time, and if the pain gets any worse do not ignore it. I hope they took a mri. Sadly 3 years after the accident im still disabled and trying to rebuild my life. Don't wait to talk to a lawyer just to cover your bases. I hope everyone feels better. nipper
