  1. several reasons. One is a brick. on e is not aerodynamically. one is heavier then the other forester is a hair over 3165 lbs vs 2860 for the legacy. Gearing is differnt between the two cars. . Also look at the tire sizes. One has 14" wheels the other has 16" All this will have an effect on it. nipper
  2. ok first thing is invest in a new radiator cap. Secondly feel the hoses when the engine is hot, if they arent close to the same temp you have a clogged radiator. When was the last time the coolant was flushed and replaced. When was the last time the t-stat was replaced. Overheating with the ac on is indictaive of a clogged radiaotr. if the raditor wasnt cleaned after the HG job, that can be the cause. niper
  3. lysol, works every time. What you are smelling is mold. Run the hvac through all the seetings, including full cold and full hot. Use the entire can, have the windows open, the smell disipates quickly. LSD watch ebay nipper
  4. The first possability is that the system is low. Cant really tell anything untill gauges are on the system and make sure the pressures are correct. Pressures will also tell us if something is clogged or if moisture got in the system. nipper
  5. ive done it, it a 97 and a 98, it just screws right in. The factory cd player is a din and mounts below the radio. Anything thats a din will just bolt in. nipper
  6. Actually i always bought my engine kits from JC whitney (all brand name parts), and in 3 engines i never had a problem. To ensure a proper kit match, you may need to take the engine apart first and measure the crank journals to make sure you get the proper bearings.   7. Sorry i dont always equate GT with turbo. Well then your stuck. You loose responsiveness on the auto vs manual. Actually if you drive a NA 4cyl as opposed to a turbo you would see the turbo isnt all that bad. About the only thing i can think of playing with the wastegate so the power comes on faster. nipper

  9. your oil consumption is considered normal 1 qt every 6000 miles (assuming a 3000 mile interval). You may be able to decrease it by stoping the oil leaks. Try tightneing the valve cover gasket (not too tight) as they come loose. The rear drip may be the big source of consumption, i doubt its the pan gasket. Its probably the plastic cover thingy on the back of the engine under the bell housing (read remove engine). nipper

  12. my guess is no cat. no cat no 02 sensors, or the o2 sensors are getting such an oddball reading its in limp mode. nipper
  13. Oddly haynes says to start at the right front wheel. They recomend doing it right front/left rear which makes sense for the diganol brake system. You can put jackstands on any solid part of the car, the frame, or suspension parts. Just remember to shake the car after its on the jackstand (or wood or cinderblocks) to make sure it is solid. i never was a fan of subarus (or anyones) jack points, but use it if you use the factory jack to raise the car. The tire does need to be removed (makes life easier). Place the tire under the car just in case it falls off the jackstand. do NOT lie under the rear brake. There is 2 ways to flush the fluid. One way is to just bleed the fluid through one brake line untill all the old fluid is gone, while topping off the master cylinder. the other is with a new clean turkey baster. Remove MOST the fluid from the Master cylinder and replace it the fresh fluid. By them time you have bled out all 4 wheels the old fluid will be gone. Pump the brakes with the car off to remove the vaccume from the power brakesThe person who has voluntered thier foot will pump the brakes 3-4 times. They will hold the brake pedal. You will then open the valve and they follow the pedal to the floor. You clase the valve and tell them to pump it again. The bleed valves will give you a fight if they havent been moved in a while. you may want to spray them with a penatraiting oil the night before. You need a glass jar and a rubber hose if you use the foot method. The reason for the glass jar is so that you can see the fluid come out of the hose without spraying it on you or the paint (stuff happens). Submerse the hose in the fluid (this avoids sucking air back in the system). Never reuse brake fuid that has come out of a bleeder. The fluid is airated and has already started sucking moisture out of the air. this should be a fairly easy job since you have not induced air into the brake system, its should go by fairly quickly. As far as how much, you will get a feeling for that once you see how much fluid comes out with the first bleed. hope that helps. nipper
  14. they are when looking for a good AWD sedan (note i said good... some of the systems out there are junk). Also fins me a 18,000.00 car with awd that has a history of running to 200.000 miles or more. They are still the cheapest. nipper

  16. there is the canister purge valve, but that is pretty good at throwing a code if its not working. nipper
  17. hrmm i guess im blessed. My 97 has the original cat at 185,000 miles. Thousg h i did make a cash sacrifice to the sooby gods on the AWD. nipper
  18. ok we know we have a tranny issue, and the TB will get worse, trust me on this one. The driveability issues, we need to know if there are any codes, though it sounds just like a bad ignitor. nipper
  19. noise vibration and harshness i guess. The svx was a soobt engine with 2 extra cylinders, where as the H6 was a purpously built 6 cylinder. Thats my best guess nippper
  20. my first guess would be a clogged cat. Hit the cat (when cold) with your hand, do they rattle. Is there anything in the air intake that shouldnt be there nipper
