  1. i'm always impressed whan somone says they had the dashbaord out one of the few things that intimidate me. nipper
  2. helium for better gas milage (ok now we are just getting silly):-p nipper
  3. if she can warp the rotors on a tank, then ist time to use mass transit There is always the american tank, any 1969 full sized chrysler ford or a cadillac. nipper
  4. i keep forgetting it can be an exhaust leak. the exhaust maniolds are so simple i forget that possability. nipper
  5. it sounds like a jumped timing belt or improper timing leading to a jump. How soon after the timing belt was changed was the car drivien, not just started. nipper
  6. Ok here in NY you have dmv paperwork to fill out if you want to keep the car honest. Other staes may not care. Never seen the big stickers befroe, but seen the glue where a sticker was....... nipper
  7. Nothing special at all on the sooby, just do the breaks as would normally nipper
  8. Depending upon the mileage on the car 2-3 can be wear. you may want to replace all the bushings in the shifter, as that may help alot. Also a gear oil change. You have to remeber you got alot of years on the cars, things are going to feel different from other cars. Japanese trannies to be a bit notchy, especially on non performance cars. Subarus have always been notchy. nipper nipper
  9. It has something to do with the speed limiter being set to the speed rating on the OE tires. Now if somone can figure out how to shut this off MUHAHAHAHA nipper
  10. SO what the record for the most pages on a thread? nipper i even forgot what year car you haave, to respond i need two windows open, one to refer back to so dont feel bad. nipper
  11. welll for older cars i still like dino (in the tranny), god knows if you put in synthetic blinker fluid the turn signals go all crazy and start leaking nipper
  12. You know i dont ever remeber anyone having to repalce a motor mount on these things, and only once a tranny mount. Is it a fuel type bucking or a mechanical source? When was the last time the fuel filter was changed? i'm not really understanding what your trying to describe, but thats just me. nipper
  13. Bah Humbug .... (giggle) i will say i had the same thing on my 98 with 180K when i flushed the tranny. MPG you cant really tell untill 3 tanks of gas. I gainded what seemes like 2 mpg on my flush, but i cna vary it by 5mpg with my right foot. One nice thing about sooby trannys, they shift like new with a fluid change. nipper
  14. a geo metro comes to mind, or a Justy 93 isnt known for having warping rotors, so i would go back to OE. Of course plan be is changing girlfreinds but i guess thats not an option heheheheheehe nipper
  15. i forogt the newer ones are lcd. My bad. Dealerships are the swiftest people on earth at times. They should have gotten one preset. You may have a problem when you go to sell the car in the future, keep all your paperwork its very important now. nipper
  16. You can. Thirty seconds for a soft reset (clear codes) overnight for a hard (clear the computer memory of your driving habits). Most leave it disconeected for an hour. nipper
  17. i know but i live in the land of bumper to bumper 2 hrs to drive thirty miles commuting, so it would be perfect for me. Hybrids are made for city under 30mph driving. NYC and Long island the only time we dont have traffic is 10am-noon and 130 - 3 pm. Even weekends are jammed. Trust me ive researched this well, and since i shold have a huge improvement in my finacial picture in the next year (i hope). nipper
  18. ive done it on a used head i got off ebay. Its not that hard to do, just takes patience and a tiny screwdriver. You always move the numbers forward never backwards. nipper
  19. thanks. If (when) gas hits the 4-5 range im thiniking of one of these (unless sooby makes one). Dont worry i would trade in my OBW for an svx (drool). If i get rear ended again i WILL be getting one of these. I rented a gas escape and i liked it, and im not a ford fan. Its a differnt 4wd system, its not AWD, thats what i was wondering. It also sounds like it has a hard time coping with needing more traction on a turn. i wil have to see if any four wheeling mag actually has taken this thing out to poor traction areas to see how well it works. nipper
  20. COOL it , You know i can put up with alot of crap, but show me literally where i called you an idiot. If you are going to post things in an open forum some people may criticize, others may not. God know i have been critisized before, but NEVER have i called anyone a name, or chewed them out (untill now) . I have been civil, i expect the same in return and dont go putting words in my mouth. If you dont want opinions good or bad, then dont post on an open forum. I just stated a fact. I have done the conversion on other cars, and for all the time and effort, it would be easier and simpler to find one with a manual. I speak from what I have done myself, not what i have wanted to do, or what somone else has done, but what ive done with my own two hands. And i apologize to everyone else on the list, but i wont sit here and be told i called somone an idiot when i did not. nipper
  21. and ocassionally we step in poo nipper glad it all worked out
  22. Catastrophic failure on a sooby is usually preceded by a long overheating episode or repeated overheatings (head gasket or otherwise). The engine oil starts to heat up, It heats up a lot slower then water does, but it also takes longer to get rid of the heat. With modern engines running hotter, an overheat will get into the threashold of where oil starts to break down. This is why i truly recomend an oil change after an over heating episode (its good insurance) What usually goes is the(pass side second cylinder) connecting rod bearing. This is the last bearing to get the oil where breakdown is critical. Heat keeps getting added to the oil untill it can be exposed to air or a water jacket. Since the oil has lost its ability to absorb shock (which is not a big thing for a main bearing) the aluminum bearing gets hammered. I have seen this repetedly. If it gets really bad the piston can starve for oil and all sorts of loverly things happen. Another way is with the engine digesting water (see the off road section) then you bend everything. Subarus dont swim well nipper
  23. I would think it would, read your owners manula and see what it says, that sounds odd to me. Did it slip into a neutral or upshift then downshift. were you ind d3 d2 or d1 nipper
  24. Its a job you can do, just dont be surprised if you get the timing marks wrong on the first try. Try to start the car before putting it back together to make sure the marks are right, it will save you alot of grief. Also inspect the seals, as you may want to replace them. They may not be leaking now, but sometime before the next nelt change they will. Also replace the water pump at this time, same reason. nipper
  25. two possabilites, and this seems to be a problem topic, as im seeing it come up alot. Either its the VSS seonsor in the transmission (which may or may not throw cel or tranny light) or its corrosion in the spedo head (simple fix take spedo apart remove head clean terminals). The car needs the vss sensors working to make the awd work. Since your not throwing a light i would normally look at the head first. Exactly what did he replace? nipper
