  1. i would suggest that you report this to NHTSA website .. if it seems like a pattern is starting up. There isnt that much there to go bad, except for that heated mirror switch. The entire controller is on PC board, so there may be an issue with it. nipper
  2. there should be a button on the trip computer on the dash ... anychance of you taking a digital pic and posting it of the dash? nipper
  3. Your that far into it replace it. Yes it can still have the writing on it, as it is in a fairly protected area, and yes the dots are sometimes still painted, espeically since its protected. nipper
  4. You know, in all honesty, i never knew that. learn something new every day nipper
  5. ok .. im almost out of ideas... Last question before we slaughter a chicken and start chanting over the engine. Are the wires properly routed in thier holders? Sometimes if the wires are crossed, sitting on top of eachother, or EEEKKK tied together, you can generate electrical charges, and this would cause missfire, leaking, lightning inder the hood. in the meantime ill find a chicken. nipper
  6. i recall some v-6's had offset connecting rod journals to help drivebality ... and chryselr 1950's V8s had them. There is alos a paper , long story short, that talks of reduced piston friction by use of an offset crankshaft journal on a V oriented piston engine (it has lots of formulas if anyone wants the link) nipper
  7. Thats about as far as i can go without laying my hand on the car. i can scan you the pics from the book and email them to you if that helps at all... nipper
  8. see now that i would like to investigate more thanks nipper
  9. ok second set is good, first set are not up to par. So you are still seeing stray voltage leaking from the wires? Have you looked at it at night, all lights off, to see if there is some common point of leakage... nipper
  10. gee im sory about the layoff, been there, and still am nipper
  11. Actually i didnt want to open that can of worms. Its been ages since I have blueprinted and balanced an engine, so i dont know how much the new pistons differ from the old pistons in weight. I do however put alot of faith in subaru on somethings, since it seems like a very rare (if ever) post about an engine spinning a bearing, either a main or a connecting rod bearing. This is the reason I buy subarus, I love the opposed flat engines, I cant afford a porsche, I dont want a vw (hehe imgaine 45 HP in todays world), but i will have another corvair nipper
  12. http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/encyclopedia/f/fl/flat_engine.htm The benefit of using an horizontally opposed engine engine versus a V engine is that it provides perfect balance because each piston's movement is exactly counterbalanced by the corresponding piston movement of the opposite side. equal and opposite forces cancel out. They cancel out, they are not absorbed. and actually forces are never absorbed in an engine, but are cushioned by the thin layer of oil on the crank journals. nipper
  13. White lithium grease. WD40 is a lubricant, not a grease, and will wear out with time. Same with hinges etc etc. nipper
  14. and here i though i had overkill on my OB with the MP3 harddrive connected to my home network... hehehe nipper
  15. CONGRATS! i always thought that was a sweet car, and will prbbly be my second car once my life gets settled ion a bit nipper
  16. Actually thats not a bad idea, you can keep it pluged in and rad it on the run. Back in the bad old days, when everyone had thier own cmputer and reader, we (the techs) would take a customers car home with the scanner pluged in to it to see if we could make it happen. The readers can be found on ebay, and autozone? will rent you one for the cost of the reader. nipper
  17. Doesnt hurt it at all, in fact the owners manual teels you how to use the gears in hilly terrane ect, thats why you have other gears. You are still the smartest thing in the car, no matter how much computer power is there. (hehe though the way some people drive .. thats a a scary thought). In fact in hilly terrane i think they suggest drive 3 to keep the car from hunting. you can always drive an automatic tranny manually if you want. nipper
  18. hrmmm ok yes there is a service bullitin that states they have a modified piston for slap. That said, on an opposed engine, the reason why they last so long is that all forces are equall and oppisite, and therefor cancel themselves out. What kind of warrenty will the dealer give you on the work? nipper
  19. is that installed? Depednding upon exhchange rates etc and what else they do .. I have paid as litle as 225 and as high as 450 depending uopn wheel bearings etc. usually when they make noise all the time, the wheel bearing is upset also nipper
  20. Thas a 2 door? unless its custom, thats really cool. I will have to keep my ears open about that rumor.
  21. Actually, has anyone seen a sooby with a supercharger on it? nipper
  22. Just as an outside shot .. after the new cap and rotor, clean the wires of all dirt, wipe them down etc. Check the coil tower for any cracks. What brand of ignition wires did you buy? nipper
  23. The little wire thingy is my vote for the non starting thing too. Its a sloppy fit and gets dirty easily. Remove it clean the contact with sandpaper, tighten it ever so slightly with pliers, and put it back on (assuming the wire isnt broken). Welcome to the board
