  1. OK I dont think there is a vaccum modulator on the new generation of soobys . Here are some things to check after re readong your original post. Look at your exhaust pipes, see if the smoke is burning off them from there. There is one other fluid that smells like ATF, Pwr Sterring fluid. The way the exhaust pipes are on the sooby, if it leaks, it will find its way there while driving. Check your Pwr St Fluid. It doesnt take much of a leak to make smoke. nipper
  2. Well since the car is going to be planter, and doesnt even have to move that far, there are either two spring pins, then the axles pry out, or if you dont see the two spring pins, they just pry out anyway. If there are spring pins , just drive them out with a drift, and it should all come apart. I hope no one was hurt .. Congrats on the duaghter. nipper
  3. DO you have an automatic? it could be a leaking tranny fluid coolant line. Bowerwash the area and see where its coming from. nipper
  4. Air struts were all the rage, they give you an ability to keep the car level no matter what the load, and raise it and lower it at will. It also helps with handling on the highway. Subaru is not the only one to do it (been around since the 50's and not on top end cars either). Now that said, do a search for that topic here, its not a big deal to put in nice old fashioned gas straurs and rip out the air system. nipper
  5. From what i see in my manual, the rear axles keep the rear wheels on the car (i guess thats one way to ilghten the car). If its an early 90's model there is spring pin that comes out then you pry them off the differntial. In newer you just pry them off. If you have the differntial hanging you need to re bolt it to the car for leverage. In all honesty its more trouble then its worth since the axles keep the wheels on the car, and your not going to loose all that much weight to make it worth it. You would till have to take apart the axles to give you a stub to mount the wheels too, or cut them. nipper
  6. Actually this is the brake interlock. The override you speak about is incase you have a dead battery and need to get the car in neutral. This is a godsend in an emergency, thats why its there, not because its a known defect. All new cars from 96? have this, so you need to get it fixed. Its not so easy as just get past. Now here is my first question, what do you mean by the button sticks? With the car in the on position (not running) put your foot on the brake pedal. You should here a relay click. Same thing if you try to press the gear selector button without pressing the brake pedal. Press the brake pedal and the button and the car should come out of park. nipper
  7. Ok lets break this down The hurrricanes, there is still a EPA waiver in effect so there are no more regional gas blends untill refineries are back at 100% or 90 days, i forget which. If you have changed plugs lately, which brand did you install? Wet wires, check to make sure your valve covers are tight, as they do losen up every so often. Has the weather changed? If it has, check your tire pressures. How are your brakes? A sticky caliper can cause a reduction of gas mileage. Have you changed your driving route to and from work lately? Heavy use of ac will drop gas mileage (this is true for using the defroster a lot). How is your wheel alignment? Has somone else been driving your car alot more then in the past? And there is always the planets are in alignnment causing more intersteller gravitaional drag on subarus, since the car is named after a star cluster... hehe nipper
  8. A fouled plug on a 4cyl engine can greatly decrease the gas mileage and performance, as opposed to fouled plug on 6, 8, or bigger engine. nipper
  9. My guess is that it looks like it is someplace in intake flow. Is it a turbo part?
  10. They can get cloged up, and the purge solenoid can bad
  11. Real easy to put the belts off by a tooth or so in any car.... nipper
  12. What were the compression numbers, and a test should be for all four of the cylinders. Here is a question, does the turbo run off all 4 cylinders or just two, and which two. I know it feeds all 4 cylinders. nipper
  13. *holds up sign* WE WANT PICS WE WANT PICS heheeh nipper
  14. Look in the owners manual. From all the posts on here I have yet to see a single complaint about towing, and people do tow. All i can suggest is that you follow the recomendations for heavy duty use, and if you are going to do a lot of heavy towing have a transmission oil cooler aded to the car. nipper
  15. You got electrical issues my freind. Is your battery fully charged and are the cable ends clean and tight. Do you have 13 volts at the battery. Lets start there. Load test the battery and see if it can stand cranking. nipper
  16. There is something wrong with che charcoal canister system the recovers vapors. My book goes to 90, i should get the fac books from the addict. It sounds like the purge valve is stuck, Also the gas cap is suppsed to relaeas the pressure if its too high for saftey sake. It not a very complcated system. Waht you may want to try is b4 the next fill, remove the line from the canister that goes to the tank, then take the cap off and see whats happens. Canbe a cloged cannister too. nipper
  17. Ok so we need to break this down. Its firing randomly. There is something called an ignitor that controls the spark. Two cylinders on opposite strokes of the engine fire together. Gte yourself a haynes manual, as it can partially talk you through the procedure. I am begining to think you mave a harness short someplace. Carefully inspect all the harnesses under the hood for any abrasions or damage. This with the relay clicking, and the buzzing with theignition on and not running.... sounds like a short. If its a short it may have ruined the ignitor. They also say to check the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors. This sparking happens with the car in the on position, and NOT cranking? nipper
  18. Just because the pump flows liquid, doesnt mean its good. Depends upon the pressure and gallons per minute. Check the timing, it sounds like the timing is way off, maybe a jumped timing belt? Does this run at all? The ac relay clicking like crazy sounds like a dead short someplace. You may just want to pull it out and attack that problem later. Hum hiss, not sure what you mean. nipper
  19. HEHEHEEH your fan is crazy:banana: . How does the car drive. Do you have a tach? The tcc solenoid controls the lock up torque converter. DO you notic on the highway a rpm drop of a few 100 rpm when slowly accelearting to highway speed ? I found this http://www.troublecodes.net/Subaru/ It lists the codes in something more rational. Are your cooling fans coming on when they are supposed to? Do they come on with the AC? Is the car running hot? nipper
  20. Look on the bright side ..you de-carbonizing the engine. You wont notice a power loss with a blown head gasket, unless you melt the engine. nipper
  21. Ever see this? http://www.cobbtuning.com/tech/dohc/
  22. Well it will be obvious if you have a fouled plug. Check the gaps, and the heat ranges. Plugs come in three heat rangers, cold, normal and hot. Hot plugs are used if you have fouling issues and drive only around town (think little old lady). Cold is if you burn up plugs on the highway or heavy load. Normal is well, normal. http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/techinfo/spark_plugs/overviewp2.asp?nav=31000&country=US nipper
  23. I have just one... you dont want to raise compression and put a turbo on the motor at the same time, as you will blow up the engine (pistons with holes are not pretty, neither are burned valves). Most turbo motors in fact have a lower compression ration, then a normally asperated engine. I would go with the stock compression ratio, but do get pistons with a longer skirt to avoid the dreaded subaru piston slap. Also subarus tend not to like lightened flywheels as they are pretty light to begin with. nipper
