  1. First question you have to ask the supplier is if it is a genuine subaru part. The 36.00 sounds like aftermarket. nipper
  2. Re-read the article. They are going to buy all of gms' interest. They have bought the 8% for cash upfront, and have agreed to buy the remaining 12% at fair market value at a later date. In big corporations, a 20% share holder has a huge affect, especially since they now become the largest single shareholder of the company. Likei said, Toyota tends to leavs things alone. I am a memeber of SAE so i get to see a little more inside poop then the general public about these deals. Basicallly GM screwed up bigtime. What was supposed to be a nice technology transfer never happened because GM just wanted to take and rebadge things, and not really give back. Firts sign it was not working was when onstar was on subaru for a very short time. Second was whne GM told subaru that to delay the Baja release here in the us because they wanted the pass through bulkhead for thier pickup (envoy?) thirs was when they were going to use a subaur chassies as a replacemnt platform for the cavalier. Fourth (which neither one liked) was the saabaru. Saab did not like, subaru didnt like it. The last one was the cross over vehical/Gm was taking far more from subaru then it was putting in to it. Saab got R and D money for electronics (thats where the new symetrical AWD system came from and better emisssion controls came from), and better crash testing and design. I didnt say it was a bad buy for toyota, I like toyota as a company, but have found thier cars with the exception of the pirus to be boring. Toyota doesnt rebadge cars, llike GM does, I think the big plus for subaru wil bein the hybrids, like i stated before. Subaru is considered a niche mfg in japan. They also tend to sell every car they make over in the US (low inventory). Also subaru has many more products then we see here in this country, they have micro cars and small electric vehicals. Gm has no interest in products they cant bring here. Personally i see Toyota as wanting more production space here in the us, and usinge Subarus underutilized plant (they dont run three shifts) is a quick way of doing it. I dont see anything but good things about this. While GM has to shrink at get rid of a few more car divisions ot survive, Toyota is going to grow. Unlike GM Toyota is going to pick up only things that have strong products. Toyota is no dummy nipper
  3. 8.9% cash (4.90 a share i think?) and the rest of the price to be determined later at stock market rates. nipper
  4. i think he meant a pressure test, you block off all the water passages then you pressurize it to 9 psi, and it has to hold the pressure. If it doesnt it means it has a crack in the head. nipper
  5. Its posted on the new generation board .... and 20% is not a small number, well not for GM anyway. Gm is loosing money faster then niagra falls spills water.Technically if it wasnt for GM's other compaines, it would be bankrupt and gone. nipper
  6. Thats a hard one, i think i would choose #2, as i am pretty sure subaru will say its normal. nipper
  7. A few theroies... Toyota just bailed out GM ... Toyota has perfected the logic for the hybrid system, which is 90% of the effort in these systems Toyota just gained a mature AWD technology (and will not waste it) Toyota and GM are still intertwined somewhat here in the US, so in reality, its not that big a change, just toyots seems to leave things alone where as GM cant seem to get anything right of late.... nipper
  8. Right at the battery. Test the voltage with the car off, and the car running. 12.5 - 13.5 volts should be at idle, a little lower with everything on. If you dont have one go to your freindly autoparts store and let them do it. nipper
  9. You have a diode going bad in the alternator. Thast why you are getting weird electrical issues. Yes you can replace the diode, now do you want to spend the 2-3 hrs to rebuild the alt to do it? or just get the rebuilt alt and throw it in. Also sounds like you may have a bad brush in the alt too. Did i miss year/mileage on the car? There is another way to check .... disconnect the alt belt and start the car. If the noise goes away, you found your issue. If it didnt, you now know what it isnt. This is assuming you have a stong battery. Have you checked the battery voltage (with a real volt meter) with the car off and running and while reproducing the condition? nipper
  10. Go to an autozone and ask them to do a battery load test/alt test for you (its usually free). The testcant be manipultted, its a simple gizmo, and you can watch them do it. It will tell you if the alt is goin bad or not. nipper
  11. Actually my 97 and 98 was like that. I leaned in really hilly country at highway speeds to use D3 and the issue went away, the car was happier, I was happier, and I actually picked up 2mpg snce the car didnt have to hunt around for a gear. nipper
  12. Are the rad hoses soft? are they dry rotted? i dont remeber if there are any tiny bypass hoses on this thing or not, somne ask can answer that. nipper
  13. They are break away bolts on the starter switch when i had to replace mine. Bring a portable drill as they are easy to drill oout. Also a lock smith can put all the cylinders on one key for you very easily. nipper
  14. I know my hatch used to squeek alot, so there is some body twist back theree with the hatch open. Why not just get a brat? nipper
  15. The only thing i can think of is maybe in the fuel system. THe fuel pump is running at this time, and maybe you have a noisey fuel pressure regulator or acumilator. Stick your head under the hood and see if you can find it See whats running and whats not. nipper
  16. You cant really update the clutch plates, its a mechanical issue that seems to be involved with a too soft valve seat, and some gumming up of the internals. From what I have seen, flushing only works so many times (I have the same problem). Seems like the only fix is to replace the clutch poack unit. I think its a LSD additive your looking for. nipper
  17. ANy car can blow a head gasket over 100K, and usually will if its a 4 cyl. My honda civic did it, so did my niassan, keep it long enough it will happen on an aluminum engine.. People expect these tiny enigines that have the same HP and torque as big lazy v-8 of not too long ago to last just as long. And if you are judging a car soley buy its engine, then you are judging it wrongly. I would rather have a solid car at 120K where everything worked and needed a head gasket, then a solid motor and all the switch gear falling apart and trim peices falling off. nipper
  18. I would range from 21 (summer ac full blast) -34 in my 97 Legacy L with 180K and original drivetrain. Check your tire pressure... nipper
  19. Altenator is easy, just really go get a rebuitl one, and if you need to a manual, unbolt it and replace it. Just dont overtighten the fan belt. It is almost a foolproof repair. nipper
  20. Oh yes it could. this is something you want to always check. Its amazing what air traaped in a cooling system can do.. nipper
  21. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051005/ap_on_bi_ge/japan_toyota Gm is selling its interest in Sooby to toyota. That is a very good thing. Maybe the minor screwups in sooby of late will be rectified. nipper
  22. heheh thats a cooling issue ... park the car till its fixed. If your drinking oil you are prbbly hurting the bottom end too.. nipper
