  1. my uncle has one of those aftermarket antennas in his car its not as good as the factory one the aftermarket boosters ive found dont do much for anything. id head to a junk yard and pull a used one they cant be too much if you pull it yourself. the booster is located behind the trim panel in the cargo area on the drivers side i saw it recently in a friends 04 outback when we took the panels off to hammer the damage out from his rear end accident.
  2. my 95 legacy l wagon does the same exact thing after sitting will crank around 10 seconds before it starts catching but wont just spring to life it requires the key to be held down for the extra few seconds before it fires. runs great once running and wont do it again unless its not driven for more than a day. if i start it every day it fires right up.
  3. i cannot remember exactly what they did but i do know that 2 of them perform the switch function one of them is a ground one of them is the switched power for the lamp that shows the icon and the other one is switched power for the red light that says its on. you can probe the back of a connector on one of the other switches to find out what colors do the light bulbs by probing the line and switching the lights on and off see if you get voltage one of them will get power when the lgihts are on. that wire needs to be tapped into and extended to where the fog switch goes to turn the background light on. then probe around the connector again switching the switch on and off for each wire untill you find the color that makes the red light come on for this function i tapped into the power out from the switch to the fog lights to turn this light on. i cannot remember if i grounded into the other switch as well for those bulbs or if i just grounded under the dash. the remaining 2 wires will be for the fog lights them selves. the switch was run into a relay before the fogs.
  4. junk yards around here give around 250 for a full car driven into the yard a friend of mine recently scrapped his car due to rust the rear wheel was about to fall off and front sub frame was almost non excistant i was surprised it made it to the junk yard without falling apart on the trip. anyways scrap is down they aren't giving much for cars that's how i got my 95 for 300 scrap yard was gonna give them 250 i gave them 300 and drove it away. im not saying scrap it now but im sure you could get more than 300 for it any day of the week. i had to do quite a few things to my 300 dollar subaru to get it road worthy again.
  5. id just take the center console apart and remove the shift lock so it can shift without holding the brakes.
  6. i dont like changing headlights in pairs because when one fails the other is gonna go soon. if u replace both of them than the chance comes up that one will die and the next night the other one will go out too this has happened to me before i did not have time to get a new bulb before the other one failed so i like to change them one at a time because then i know when the other one does fail that one i replaced will keep going long enough for me to change the bulb
  7. my exhaust is all patched up the same flange broke on mine repaired the same way i had 2 holes form in the piping about 3 feet from each other there's sheet metal hose clamped over those the muffler broke off flush i bought an adapter that was tight fitting to the inside of the mufflers inlet hole hammered it in and clamped the muffler back on to the piping. in the front the resonator broke free i have some strategically placed hose clamps holding that together and its actually pretty quiet you wouldn't think it was broken and repaired in so many places from the way it sounds.
  8. we found the issue the gate was being pushed on the left side too much. we had the interior out of the back of it today and massaged the rear end a bit more got it a little straighter. from here his plan is to fiberglass over all the dents there and put some body filler over that. if the corner comes out good enough hes gonna replace the tail gate.
  9. my friend got rear ended and i helped him pull the mashed in corner back out the other day there was about an inch and a half gap along the drivers side where the gate did not seal before we started. we managed to bend it back far enough to get a new tail light in it and the gate to close and seal up but the interior light does not shut off all the time sometimes it will sometimes it wont it needs to be slammed shut hard to get the light to turn off. where is the tail gate door switch located? we couldn't find it. we pulled at least 6 to 8 inches of car back out from that corner it was really stuffed in there.
  10. i decided to just wait for it to go to my brothers shop he has a hoist and all the right tools.
  11. it has the ej25 engine. i like to consider myself a bit of an advanced mechanic ive always done all the work to my own cars. we do have a service manual for the car i was hoping it could be done with the engine in the car as i do not have an engine hoist. its in my driveway now and my mom has my legacy for now. my brother cant get it into his shop for 2 weeks so i was looking into what needed to be done to see if i could maby get it done sooner.
  12. my moms head gasket went in her 01 outback wagon. whats involved in doing the head gaskets on her car? how much stuff has to come apart? does anyone know of a good write up?
  13. that theory is gone i took it out today and tried to smack the dash a few times witch dident work then it just jumped up im gong to say its probly the speed sensor
  14. so i drove the subaru the other day and the speedo did not work. the check engine light came of with a p500 vehicle speed sensor however if i smack the top of the dash the speedo turns on and works fine until i stop the car for a period of time. will the car throgh a p500 with a working speed sensor if the speedo does not move? could this be a loose connection somewhere? 95 legacy wagon
  15. im unsure of part numbers they were on my friends outback and he got new rotors i know his old rotors were only a year old and are in much better shape than mine. maby i should just grab them and see if they fit
  16. i have a chance to get 2 rear rotors from a 03 or 04 outback wagon for free. would they fit on my 95 legacy? i need rear rotors bad.
  17. if you crawl under there and smack the cat with your hand can you hear stuff inside rattling freely? if so the cat has broken apart internally and will need new one.
  18. i have my plates bolted on with through bolts using all 4 bolt holes. no one can steal my plate because unless you hold the nut on the back side its not coming off.
  19. every time i go to the yard i look in every subaru of proper year for them. so far i have all but the ones for around the radio and vents. i found the one for around the radio once but someone ripped it out and broke it.
  20. im helping a friend find a car this afternoon. the car i found is a 1995 subaru legacy sedan. aside from checking for rust in obvious places what should i look at with this model subaru? http://newhaven.craigslist.org/cto/4967330790.html
  21. you could build your own refrigerant recovery system/ vacuum machine.
  22. ive decided to just drive it once every few weeks to keep things moving. im only paying 63 bucks a month insurance for both cars. its strange going form one car tot he other. the subaru has a tight feal but poor ride quality while the bmw is loose feeling but has a nice ride. its a 27 year old car the bmw ive owned it for 11 years.
  23. my 80's bmw has some simple security system that is controlled by the on board computer. i had disabled it but it worked by disabling the spark. if i entered a code into the computer the alarm would activate and if someone tried to steal it the car would still crank but the 3rd time the horn would beep. im sure it wouldn't be to hard to hook up some kind of spark kill switch.
