Head Gasket Job...need advice ASAP
cookie replied to dizzydiva51's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthat came folded down when I bought them. I think I bought the hoist I had from Harbor Freight and although it had a large welded base it would break down flat. When I got sick of mechanical work I gave all that stuff away.

Head Gasket Job...need advice ASAP
cookie replied to dizzydiva51's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXit down here you could use my garage. I would have most of the tools needed and could just buy whatever else we would need. I no longer have my rollaways and hoist but there is a rental place around the corner with anything needed. On the average weekend I can swing about 8 hours for my own stuff due to other commitments. For example tomorrow I will be at headquarters in San Carlos and will be the officer on duty responsible for SamTrans and Caltrain. Humboldt is a bit of distance for something like this unless you are free to go up there.

Help!!!!!!!!! Wiper woes 98 Legacy
cookie replied to swi66's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthat problem. the last time I saw it was in Maine when someone left the wipers on in freezing rain and the car was started. On that car there was a shaft out of the wiper motor with an arm on it. The arm had a small shaft to connect to the wiper driveshaft on one side. There should be a clip on the end that holds the linkage on. It used to be common for that clip to be forced off. Good luck

Most severe problem with Subarus: Subaru dealerships?
cookie replied to Gnuman's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXdealer with my local BMW dealer. The BMW dealer fixed it the way I wanted and there was not much to fix. The Subaru dealer has made me whack my forehead enough to make it flat. On the one occasion when I got to talk to the shop manager he and I found a lot to agree on. To be fair I tend to think anyone who agrees with my diagnosis is good.He also agreed with me that the pilot bearing should have been replaced with the clutch. One more thing to be fair about was that Subaru paid me back for the head gasket job I had done about a year later and well after the end of the original warranty. It is the phase one owners who have suffered the worst as those cars are old enough that no one covers them.

ticking noise!!
cookie replied to holly13's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThere is nothing I like better than a brand new engine and if I was offered it I would try to get the latest block.

Head Gasket Job...need advice ASAP
cookie replied to dizzydiva51's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXof Subaru head gasket. I say this because auto part store gaskets are often used by local mechanics and could easily explain repeated replacements. When I got mine done I quoted the gasket number I wanted and the dealership had not heard of them yet. I waited an extra week for them to be shipped in. It was worth it to have no furthur problems. I had the same problem when I wanted the udated clutch kit. This board often gets the info to consumers before my dealership gets it through Subaru channels.

ticking noise!!
cookie replied to holly13's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI broke my M series BMW in by treating it carefully, not revving all the way for a few thousand miles, and not keeeping it at the same speed on the freeway. I also gave the car one more oil change thant the manual called for. Many of my friends are the rev heck out of it school and are experienceing oil burning. I followed the manual and I'm not. I have done this with about 50 engines and it has always worked. I assume you have the car owner's manual? Do exactly what it says and you won't go far wrong.

Excessive Clutch Pedal Travel
cookie replied to novadog's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXBut usually if there is air being introduced this is only a temporary remedy. Last year I changed the slave and hose per the TSB on my 99. I was not happy with the result until I also changed the clutch master cyl. Now she seems ready for five more years. Odds are your clutch will get worse and worse until it starts sticking to the floor. At that point you can pull it up with your foot and pump it to get home. Mine failed in SF traffic of course.

Head Gasket Job...need advice ASAP
cookie replied to dizzydiva51's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI believe an article came out last week that had us among the highest priced places to live in the US. This also goes for shop rents, insurance, taxes, etc. I am often amazed when I see the prices posted by others on the board. I guess I shouldn't be when a middle class house goes for $700,000 around here. I think if I had something major that I knew needed to be done to my car I would be tempted to drive it up north to somebody like Richy where rents and prices are far more reasonable.

Why replace an oil pump?
cookie replied to shimonmor's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXbecause if you've been around these cars more than a few months you have seen reseal and tighten the screws on the oil pump so many times that it is easy to forget just saying oil pump does not mean that. Point taken. A couple of years ago when I started reading this I might have made the same mistake and I have installed at least 100 oil pumps. I have also rebuilt oil pumps from Jimmy Diesels to cars and I have never seen anything but a Subie where you reseal them and check the screws.

Driving without thermostat...
cookie replied to stanigu's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXand driving without a thermostat up there in the winter proves it. When I was a kid in Maine I used to drive an Austin healy Sprite in the winter with no top and a snowmobile helmet, but those days are gone.

Head Gasket Job...need advice ASAP
cookie replied to dizzydiva51's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthe reason I ask is that they will know exactly what needs to be changed. The prices seem high to me but might not be bad if it is a dealer and in an expensive area. I am in San Mateo and had my Head gaskets replaced in Redwood City at Carlson. I paid about 2 gs just for the head gasket job and had other work performed at the same time. I would have the timing belt, seals, oil pump sealed, tensioner if it needs it, and water pump done. This closes up the front of the engine for the next several years.

raw fuel smell in cabin
cookie replied to jeanthebean's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYou could have a leak anywhere in the fuel system. Cold weather shrinks componants and can make things leak that do not at room temp. Get professional help on this if you can't find it yourself as many cars have burned from fuel leaks.

To the guy who PMed me on a tranny
Sorry I screwed up and deleted your message. There is a rebuilt automatic on the Bay Area Craigslist in Santa Rosa. I am not enough of an expert to know if it will fit your car, but Josh would probably know.

Dishonest dealership?
cookie replied to jakl's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXit has been a broken speedo replaced with another used one.On a car this old it makes no sense to roll it back a few thousand miles as it affects the value very little. It is still very low mileage at the high rate.

trany growling @ me
cookie replied to bugite's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthe car is trying to tell you something. The diffs would be screaming. New oil in the tranny can help once you start to get things resolved.

Disabling Passenger Seatbelt Warnings
cookie replied to wcarey's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOn a BMW if you turn the key on with anything in that circuit disconnected it triggers the airbag light. This can only be turned off by buying the SRS specific light resetting tool or going to the dealer. You might be better off fastening the belt and putting a cheap lower cover over the belt system, or rationally putting the dog in the back.

electric antennae does totally recede
cookie replied to later, Peter's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXwe are near the Bay so the salt gets them a bit. I clean them with Scotchbrite and WD40 and they work until the motor burns out and I have to go to Grand Auto and get a cheap replacement. I usually change the whole thing at once with a universal kit. I am not sure if they have those in Canada guys. I got fifteen years out of lubeing my Mercedes and two years on the new one when I sold it.

Starter problems
cookie replied to Downbound's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXat least I hope thats what it is becuse it could also be a damaged flywheel. The starter is only a few bolts, if it were my car I would pull it and inspect the flywheel with a light while turning the engine slowly to make sure the teeth are good. Are you still on extended warranty? If so tell them to inspect the flywheel when replaceing the starter. Somebody did a post on repair of those clocks a while ago, do a search to see if you can find it.

Problems Subarus are prone to...
cookie replied to Kakadu's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXwant to spend. I would love a 2.2 conversion but the car has to be worth it. If the car was mint I would spend what was necessary. I reckon it would cost about $5,000 or more to do it up right with a conversion. What is the car worth afterwards? If the car was woth say $8,000 I would hesitate to put 5 Gs in it.

Oil Change - Do you "dry crank"?
cookie replied to Setright's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYou and I and the South City guy ought to be able to get together. seems like there was somebody from Pacifica too, but I asked him if he was from the Northern Ca Pacifica or South but don't recall hearing back. From the map it looks like Berkeley is about half way between Oakley and San Mateo. Maybe we could arrange to meet you there as Berkeley is a natural Subaru town. If there is anybody else around we could invite them too. I can visualize ten Subarus in the Ashby BART parking lot, no twenty, no thirty. Heck if we can get Wavy Gravy to MC it could be thousands from all over the world with the Greatful Dead playing... I better calm down and take my meds.

Please Help...97 OB in shop
cookie replied to dizzydiva51's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthe start and the mechanics should have replaced both gaskets. Hopefully if you tear it down as soon as possible you might be able to save it. After the gas gets in the coolant and displaces the water the reminder is going to boil just as you experienced. I am sorry for the bad advice you have gotten thus far.

Battery (Sealed vs. Unsealed)
cookie replied to brus brother's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthe sticker and they have filler holes. I can buy two Interstates for one Optima, so even though they are cooler I have Interstates in my cars. I change them every three to four years and never give them a thought. This has worked for me for the last 15 years or so.
