Quick question!
I say you take the $250 you were going to spend on a EA81, and buy a timing belt kit... then do the work yourself. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1986-1994-Subaru-1-8-GL-DL-Loyale-Timing-Belt-Kit-EA82_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1205Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem220352434323QQitemZ220352434323QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories There is the kit you need. Its alot less than $250 and shouldn't take more than 5 days to get to you. There is plenty of documentation here on the board to walk you through it. I used that same kit on my EA82 turbo, and it worked great. It has everything you need. Also, do not worry about your valves. The engine is a non-interference engine and breaking a timing belt will do absolutly no harm to anything else at all.

HI all
So what did this "Subaru Only for 30 years" shop say when you asked them about this problem?
-
HI all
Yeah probably. However, if you had a shop replace both CV joints, they would have been able to tell immediately that a bearing was bad, and if it was a reputable shop they should have warned you and not even installed the CV's without replacing the bearings.

Ronald Reagan's old ranch Brat
+1 for the restoration. That Brat looked worn and torn, and if they are going to have it on perminant display at his Ranch, I believe it should look like it did the day he drove it home from the Dealer. Im sure they did some restoration on his ranch as well, so its only fitting. Its a spectacular piece of history. It made mention of an Enthusiast named Todd... would that be Subaru3 by chance?

New Camera = New Brat Pix!
I wish mine was all original, however it is more modified as it sits now, than I could ever do on my own. Its not an original brat by any means, but still... its too pretty to lift and beat up.

Motivation to repair
I have the same problem Noah. I realized that I just have to get off my rump roast and stop making excuses. There's only one way something you want done will get accomplished, you gotta just do it. Like Ed said, start small. Just get out there and start turning a wrench on something simple. Slowly you will remember how much joy you get out of working on your Subaru. Once you are done with one project, you will be more motivated to move onto the next. Before you know it, a couple weeks have gone by and you are packing the car, getting it ready for its next wheelin' trip.

New Camera = New Brat Pix!
Never. I will just have to make due with out

New Camera = New Brat Pix!
They are worth whatever somebody is willing to pay for them. I'll tell you, they are getting harder and harder to find.

New Camera = New Brat Pix!
NEVER!! I'd have to find a beater to do that too.

Picture Request: Brat Targa Stripes.
Naw, im talking about the decals that came from the factory that says "BRAT" behind each window.

New Camera = New Brat Pix!
Yeah, odd huh Dave?? Something about this one, I don't feel like butchering it like the many other Subaru's I've owned in the past.

Picture Request: Brat Targa Stripes.
I need to get some High-Def pictures of Targa stripes installed on a Brat. From any and all angles possible. I plan on finding a shop that can install some aftermarket stripes for me, however, I want to make sure they install them as close to factory spec's as possible. The higher the definition the better. Thanks, -Brian

New Camera = New Brat Pix!
Yeah, the Gas door came to me like that... i know the front of the truck is from a '83 Wagon, don't know what year the brat half is. I assume any wagon/sedan/hatch gas door would work though. And I also like how it sits with the rear lowered. Just not motivated enough to make the necessary modifications to keep it that way.

New Camera = New Brat Pix!
Thanks Patrick. Also, the tires are working pretty good. Handling is good, but its still a EA81... so its not a sports car or anything. The most noticeable difference is acceleration. Although I do hit 80mph on the freeway and im barely passing people, or keeping up. Im sure the speedo is way off.

New Camera = New Brat Pix!
Wow Ed, this whole time I thought the prev. owner bought your alloys. You mean there are two sets this nice in existance???! I installed my bed chrome, then decided to take the Brat to one of my favorite picture spots to get some better background shots... 56K go get coffee....

New Camera = New Brat Pix!
Ed, was this not your set?

New Camera = New Brat Pix!
Got sick of the old 2megapixel sony piece of crap Ive been using. Makes the Brat look worse on the computer than in real life... so I went and picked up a new 8 megapixel Canon. Now I can get some decent shots... snapped these quickies on the way home from the store, might go back out and get some more with better scenery after I install the bed chrome.

Bust a nut
Any local Napa will have a replacement stud. Remove your wheel, take a large hammer and a large punch, and drive the stud out of the hub. When installing the new one, you can put it through the hub, and use the lugnut itself to press the stud into the hub.

Flat towing with d/r EA81?
EA81's should only have a single piece driveline. If you remove it you will lose all your gear oil from the tranny. With the Tranny in neutral, you should be fine. I believe it is only Automatics you will have problems flat towing.

ea81 to ea81t
The EA81 and EA81T heads are completely different. The engines themselfs are different. EA81's are carburated EA81T's are MPFI There is a computer that controls the EA81T. Each head has fuel injection ports. The pistons are different to lower compression ratio. If you wanted to cheat, you could do a SPFI conversion and bolt on a Turbo. But the ECU that runs a SPFI may not operate correctly if intake manifold pressure goes into the positive.
