  1. My '87 has been doing this for over a year, and we can't find it either. That said, it's been over 15,000 miles and it hasn't goten any worse or shown any other symptoms, other than the exact thing you are describing.
  2. The whole motly crew stopped by the temporary chez Smith in Kalispell before heading west to pick up the trashwagon. Staked them to whatever leftovers we could find in the fridge, beers for the passengers and Dew (the official Montana state pop) for the designated driver. I reckon we'll end up on the cutting room floor, unless they want a geezer counterpoint in the video.
  3. ... "It's good to be back in home sweet home New York City and it's really good to see all of you again....take it Dee Dee 1 2 3 4!!!!!!!!"
  4. ... in which I had no part one way or another. Goat Boy IS right on one issue - it IS 'looser'. 'Looser' is an 'official' spelling from the old Click & Clack Car Talk site (youse know, doze NPR guyz). It's the polite way of calling someona a ... well, the way YOU spelled it. Guess you hadda been there.
  5. My album is on the 3rd page ... it's someone's (I forget who's) '97 Outback undergone a severe cut'n'paste. I apologize for the graphic quality, I don't have photoshop and did it with my camera software.
  6. High whine and putting out 14v at idle, pegging ammeter above 2,000 rpm. Any reason why I 'shouldn't' be looking for a replacement over in the marrketplace?
  7. SOA REALLY needs to do something about dealer ethics. We've had the 02 sensor replaced twice (both on warranty) on our '00 Legfacy wagon and we still get intermittant bogus CELs. After 46,000 trouble free miles we have learned to ignore it. If you are in an emissions check state you can: 1. Do the battery dance just around the corner from the inspection station so the codes have cleared and the light is off for your check. 2. Move to Montana ;-)
  8. I have learned a lot, and hopefully passed on some of my hard earned lore. I think I've earned the right to voice my opinion. And no thanks, I don't need a pro bono job, no matter how worthy the cause. To all you moderators that do donate your time and efforts, a tip o' the hat
  9. I'll go even further. It's his car, and he has the right to do with it as he damnwell pleases. This decision may be a matter of personal preference, or financial necessety. If he never goes off-road (and snow certainly isn't an issue), 2WD may not be a bad decision as gas heads reapdly toward $2.00/gal. The purpose of this board is to offer help and information, and a little afficianado support now and then. NO ONE has the right to dis someone over their use of ANY personal property, so long as it doesn't interfer with public safety, law, or the environment. There will always be someone who is offended by YOUR plans to chop, lift, cut fenders ... you name it, of THEIR personal favorite model. Heck I just saw the cover of some ricer mag, that was screaming about how to convert your brand new WRX to rear wheel drive. Personally, *I* think 'that's' sick, but hey, it his car ... and after all it's just a car. So, keep the sniping to yourselves, look what happened to the 'Off Topic' forum.
  10. Has anyone ever really looked into converting the adjustable air suspension to hydraulics? Could it work, would it take my entire retiremnent account to do it? In theory, it seems pretty simple, must be 10,000 lowriders that could do it in their siesta!
  11. over in the marketplace. I just got a new (REAL) job that will keep me in Montana. So, no more comutes to Maryland, and put the Hawaii beach car on hold. It's time to start the Rancheru!
  12. I showed them the letter I got from Subaru stating the TSB hadn't been satisfied. They said the computer said it had. I said well, it was done and it didn't fix it. They said OK, took the letter and cancelled the bill. CEL came on forty miles later anyhow.
  13. If the guy built up all that butt time delivering mail, or newspapers or even worse, pizzas ... be afraid, be very afraid. OTOH, if he was a road warrior and had accounts out in Alberta and the thing ran at 70mph for hours at a stretch, they almost don't count (assuming regular and timely maintenance). Our '00 Legacy had 100,000 miles on it by it's 13th month of life. The dealer sold it to me really cheap because everyone was afraid of it. I figgered NO ONE could put those miles on except on the interstates, so I went for it. It's been the best car I've ever had, up to 146,000 now and nary a hint of a problem.
  14. Maybe they knocked the wire loose mucking about under your baby. Oil changes is about the only thing I go to the dealer for, too many scare stories about lube monkies; and if you watch the ads there is usually a sale so the cost is only a few bucks more.
  15. But mine doesn't jump about, it runs all the way up to 115 at 55 or so. Intermittant, does it most often when cold ... or very warm. Go figger.

  17. We bought our '00 Legacy wagon in November '01, and it had 100,000 miles on it when we got it (this was a 13 month old car, mind you). Today the car has 146,000 miles on and we're still running on the same brakes, front and rear. Just had them checked when we put the summer tires back on last week, and the shop said they look just like they did last fall. My '87 Wagon had 130,000 on it when I bought it in '97, today it has 210,000 +, and I haven't done brakes on it either (or clutch, for that matter). Just remember that brakes are 'fungable' parts (that means you use them during normal application of the product). Drive hard and you pay more, course I'm a geezer, so whadda *I* know about driving hard, right? Wrong, I just don't do it much any more.
  18. TSB/recalls to date include: The clunk thingie, we too ignored it. o2 sensor that throws bogus Check Engine Light codes. We had it done twice and it still does it. It's a meaningless problem, so we've learned to just ignore the intermittant CELs. Ther'e another about inadequate paint coverage around the rear strut towers. We ignored that too 'cause Montana doesn't salt. If I lived in the rusr belt I would DEFINATELY respond to that one. The new all 2.5 Ltr engine 'coolent conditioner' notice, actually stopleak to delay potential external head gasket leaks. ours doesn't have ANY, leaks coolant or oil. I like this car better than any of the hundred plus others I have owned, except for a couple of the extreme on-the-edge vehicles.
  19. TriSodiumPhosphate. It's a proven cleaner-degreaser, and Tide's loaded with it, so you have a detergent and TSP all-in-one. Or you can just wash the car and take your skin off with the straight stuff! And don't forget the tackrag just before spraying.
  20. Including locating the donor. I've spoken with him several times about potential projects, and can vouch that he is WAY knowledgable in the Subaru minituae, and dedicated to quality work. I think he's one of those guys who has figured out how to get people to pay him for what he would do for free ... as play. As to the 'no contact', he has in the past had minor connection problems, but usually it's a matter of getting his head out from under a hood! If he's got the car you want, go for it ... if not tell ME about it, maybe it's the one I'm 'looking for'!
  21. on the lower body in winter. The estimate was $425, if I removed all valences and bumpers and masked the door jambs myself. $600 if I just drove it in. Oh, and they won't warranty body paintovers, just truck beds ... go figger.
  22. http://usmb.net/gallery/view_photo.php?id=bug_roadster With the Subaru engine you won't need the airscoop on the back deck. All rear lights will be in the vents for a really clean look I'd realy like to build this too, on a Roo platform ... wonder if you could just ct the body off a hatch and drop the bug shell on - then do the roadster cut?
  23. http://usmb.net/gallery/mtsmiths/Baja_roo This should be a piece of cake. The rear seat backs could be reinforced and cladded to form the front of the bed when the family is aboard. When hauling you could lift the hatch top, drop the seat and lower the new bottom hinged tailgate, for a standard length bed, fold the front passenger seat and you have a 12' fully supported length. I may just do THIS version, that way I can still have the full moonroof!
  24. Hack PhotoShop, 'cause I don't HAVE PhotoShop and used the edit functions on my digital camera upload program. But, that's what it WOULD look like, if it existed. So, all you coasties that are finding the nice low mileage rust-free Subaru's out there, be ready. I'll be in the market as soon as we sort out the job changing going on right now. I GOTTA retire the powder Patrol wagon while it's salable and get my donor car to actually create the Rancheru.
