  1. I hopped in my '87 and drove it straight through from Whitefish to Baltimore, with stops only to gas up and two restaurant sit-down meals. ADD IN THE MIDDLE: went running around the Pine Barrens with all those east coast crazies while I was back there too! Six months later I came back the same way ... except I did stay one night in a motel (getting old I guess). Used one qt of oil each direction.
  2. Sorta what I thought, to be honest, I've never loooked under the 'new Roo'. I know that if it's a split exhaust it's subject to the whims of the Bernoulli principal, and not an indication of actual flow. THANX
  3. ... driving behind The Pretty One this morning (10 deg F, low humidity) I noticed that there was a LOT more vaopr exhaust out the drivers-side tailpipe. The curb-side had almost none, the drivers a steady plume. Is this just normal unbalanced flow, or is ther trouble ahead. After a couple miles and the car was well warmed up, it all stopped. Uses no coolant, and was pressure tested when we had a coolant change this fall. Runs fine, just never noticed this before (Duh ... never followed the car on a cold day before).
  4. Yes, we did ours with parts bought from Jamie and others on the board. It was a straight bolt-up. The only problem our installer encountered was aligning the front struts, I guess the marks are different so he had to do it a couple of times before he gort them oriented in the right direction. We called the result the Legaback.
  5. Straight silicon spray wiped on the rubber gaskets.
  6. 2000 Legacy, A/T 186,000 and ready for another 100,000 when whacked by a Grand Cherokee. Never a hint of a GH problem, did have the Subaru gunk.

  8. That's what we get with our '06 Outback, 28+ around town 31+ on the Interstate cruise control ... if I keep it below 70. Above 70 it appears that the parisitic aero-drag kicks in and the mileage drops down to the 28s again.
  9. Obviously out-of-date, since the Edsel inspired 'pigsnout' has been retired to the dustbin, which it so richly deserves. I'd guess that this is a retread styling exercise that is still floating around the web ... but then, who knows? I DO know that Subaru seriously needs two (02) things very quickly (and VERY much in the US market, not just Asia and Europe): 1. A diesel 2. A hybrid If they dont get their shyte together and produce Subaru versions of those vehicle platforms say good-bye to the Marque (Can YOU say DeSoto, Nash, Oldsmobile) ... all cars that couldn't change to suit the marketplace in their time. Well, Subaru the times they are a'changin' and you'd better play catchup toot sweet, or sayonara (just to mix my linguistic metaphors).
  10. Did you take photos at the scene (ALWAYS carry a disposable camera in your car)? Even if not, if you were in the left lane and you hit the curb on the left side of your car, just WHAT lane change were you supposedly executing? Go back and take pics of the wreck site so you can diagram the accident and take it in front of a judge. You can't hire a lawyer to fight a $100.00 ticket, But I for one wouldn't just take it from some dumb cop ... even in Massatwo***************s.

  14. All you need is a standard A/T service every 30,000 mi. $79.00 at our Subaru dealership (usually $99.00, but it's on coupon sale so often we've never paid the 'list price'). As far as I'm concerned anything else is a 'wallet flush'.
  15. Not a Subaru-specific diagnosis, but the pepper tree mechanic in me says your throw-out bearing is on the way out. You can keep driving it until it quits working (if you don't mind being stranded), it won't hurt anything else and it could take years to fail.
  16. OK, you guyz got me thinking that maybe I was wrong, so I checked this morning. Yes, it's the December 2007 issue of Snowboarder ... keep looking, the cover and article are worth it. Only those crazy Kiwis, no American ski resort would EVER allow this much fun!
  17. I dunno guyz, it's on the stands in the Whitefish Spaceway, and we're hadly at the leading edge of magazine distribution ... Olnick, you know da shipping get all hamajang to da rock ... bumbye brah. Let's just say it involves snowboards, a ski run in New Zealand, a WRX and at least one 100'+ jump.

  19. We are on our second (sorta) Outback. Our 2000 wagon was purchased as a Legacy but we changed the suspension to an Outback, creating the 'Legaback'. We now drive an '06 Outback wagon. I have many tens of thousands of driving/riding miles in the Outbacks, and a relative few passenger only miles in a Forester (which as pointed out previously is actually a taller Impreza). From my brief exposure I would say that the Outback is FAR more comfortable than the Forester, and does in fact have more volume. The Forester has a taller cargo space however. The handling is nowhere as good as the Outback (viewed from the PAX seat), nor is the ride. That said ... either is a great car, analyze your personal needs and choose the one that suits you best. If I are planning off-road use, I would pick the Forester, lots of highway miles the Outback, hands down. I don't know the actual mileage on the Foresters, but I suspect the aerodynamics of the Outback would give better mileage compaied with the Forester (which has the aerodynamics of a brick). Our '06 gives is 28.7 mpg in regular driving and up 31.5 on interstate highway cruise control. If I were looking for a second wagon (but I need a pickup for number 2), I would by a Forester rather than have two Outbacks. If I had the time, I would buy a Forester and converet it into a pickup, which I would then keep forever.

  21. While there, have them check the tire for ply seperation. Could be delamination within the tire ... gives you that 'squirmey' feeling.
  22. Yeah, I'm aware of the unsprung weight issue, still seems like a trade-off toward simplification to me. I guess we just have to wait for 'fresh-off-the drawing-mouse' designs instead of warmed over ICE platforms for any real utility.
  23. Why aren't the electric motors in the wheels in new EV designs? They can then serve as power, brakes/regen, and you could set up the design as you like it ... FWD/RWD/AWD, just by placing motors in the appropriate hubs. No transmissions, no 'brakes' (except service and back-up). Cars could be built up like Legos, any way the customer wanted them. The only concept I ever saw was the GM platform/body thingie a couple of years ago, but even that had a frame mounted motor and transmission with all hte attendent weight & friction drag. Thread hijack may send this to another forum , but wait, is it possible to hijack one's own thread?
