Yet another 5 speed d/r swap Q.
dave valiant replied to dave valiant's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks again Shawn.I have a 3.90 rear in my parts wagon I was just hoping to not have to swap em out.Jerrys kit would definetly be in the plans, after I get a tranny. -
Yet another 5 speed d/r swap Q.
dave valiant replied to dave valiant's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey Shawn, thanks for the info.I must admit that I am a little confused about the turbo spline axles.Do you mean turbo spline axles from an EA82T?On the other hand that was a pretty thorough explanation,I'll either paypal the board or just give you cash in Iowa.Thanks,Dave. -
I have read here on the board that when doing th 5 spd d/r swap you need an EA82 flywheel and have also read that you need an EA81 flwheel. Is this an instance where either will work.I have read that you need the 81 to match the timing marks but my EA81T has the mark on the crank pulley.Since tuning up my Brat and getting thoroughly spanked by my buddys RX I have finally realized that the auto must go!Off the line he waxed me but once I got the revs up he really didn't get much further ahead.I have an EA81 flywheel and am going to start searching yards for d/r 5 speeds. If I find a 3.70 trans I assume it will work with the 3.70 rear in my Brat.I am sure you long timers here on the board are probably sick and tired of these questions you answer over and over again, but I have heard alot of diferent answers to these questions. And as an added incentive if you mods can set me straight on these questions I promise to make a $10.00 donation to the board by weeks end.As my daughter has taught me sometimes you just have to put a bribe up. Thanks again,Dave.

ignition timing procedure
dave valiant replied to dave valiant's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Turbone is it normal to be completely out of advance at 15 degrees btdc.I double checked my timing because I had timed it off of cylander #2 instead of #1.It was only off by 2 degrees but when I put it to #1 at 15 btdc it is out of adjustment. Thanks for the help,Dave. -
ignition timing procedure
dave valiant replied to dave valiant's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I got it set at 15 btdc.It was at 5 btdc.What a difference correct timing makes.Thanks a bunch Turbone. -
I was wondering if any one out there knows the correct procedure for adjusting the ignition timing for an EA81T.I assume you disconnect the vacuum advance but I am unsure what RPM the engine should be running at or what the timing should be set to.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thanks,Dave.

Check out this subaru site - lots of info
dave valiant replied to lagwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That is pretty cool.I did notice a couple of mistakes though. For 84 engines it has the 1.8 listed as over head cam.It also lists the 84 Turbo or automatics as full time 4wd. -
I know I am just repeating what others have said but my sube gets NGK and the wifes Jeep gets Autolites.Domestic Autolite,Import NGK.

Well when I get the EJ in that EA81t will be for sale. From what I have read on this board I would be getting to my limit with the EA81t at 130 hp,with the EJ I would be starting at 130.Who knows I might want to get even more out of it at a later date.I just like having the flexibility of starting at 130 and not ending there. As for the purists,if someone out there is that offended by this they can buy it off of me.If someone wants to start a restoration on my very rusty Brat that just happens to have a rare engine, hey more power to ya,all you have to do is buy it.You would be alot better off getting McBrats turbo it is in ten times better shape than mine.I'm not trying to be a jerk here it's just that it seems like whenever I post something about modifying my Brat I get responses like "Oh No you can't do that to such a rare vehicle" well actually if it were'nt such a basket case I wouldn't consider doing such things. If you go to the midwest meet you will see me and my Brat there and you will understand that I wont be carving up a museum piece.Well I feel better and if I offended anyone out there that wasn't my intention. If you want to yell at me just make sure when you post that your caps lock is on.If it isn't I wont know if you are yelling or not.

Well I'm thinking of putting an ej22 in an early 80's sube.I am just trying to get some info on the engines and so far it sounds like the ej22 is a very solid unit.Since you brought up having a couple of engines what do you want for one and the ecu?I really like the looks of the older gen subes but there doesn't seem to be any real perfomance parts out there.I had thought about going with an EA82t but from what I understand the NA EJ22 makes more power and doesn't have the head problems.
-
Does anyone know when the EJ22 first went into production? Were there any model years that had specific problems? Was it ever turboed from the factory.I am thinking of doing an EJ22 project but I know absolutely nothing about them. What I am thinking of doing will take a lot time and planning so I am trying to get as much info as possible about the engine.I saw a template for ataching a dr 5 speed to an EJ22 which is the trans I want to use.Any help would greatly appreciated.Thanks,Dave.

My Accell took a dump on me 3 weeks after I installed it.I also had the same problem as Stupidru with my tach jumping all over the place at idle.

EA82T in Gen 1 Brat, it's in there!!!!
dave valiant replied to garner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That looks amazing! You should have all kinds of fun torturing the honda boys in a Gen 1 Brat. You should drag it and post some quarter mile ETs and trap speeds. To Sweet! -

High performance downpipes for the EA81T,poly bushings, high performance shocks and struts,5 lug hubs for our 4x140mm so we can run modern sube wheels without a complete conversion. -
If I can get the loan for your coupe she will be called the little quad coupe. Why,because I'm a dork who has to name every car I own.

A very odd overheating issue on 87 RX turbo
dave valiant replied to greggbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It almost sounds like you are somehow getting an air bubble in your coolant somewhere and when you open the cap the bubble is vented out.I don't have any ideas of how this could be happening or if I am correct but thats what it sounds like to me. -
I had an old Plymouth Valiant I thought was in need of new wiring because 2 lights were burnt out.I would have to agree to check for a burnt bulb.If that isn't your problem I'm afraid I am quite useless to you.

If I am leaving I will call her the Bratmobile,as in "to the Bratmobile".But if I am discussing about her it's usually Braticus.

I am currently getting any where between 19-22MPG.I'm sure it would be better if my trip to work wasn't almost all uphill. When I go to the Midwest Meet I'm hoping to be in the 25 MPG range since South Dakota east of the Black Hills is so flat.
