New factory "Off-rioad" subie, the Subaru XV anyone??

Featured Replies

So My dad emailed me asking about a new Subaru model, for off-roading, to compete with Jeeps, and the like. I figured I or others here would be in the know for anything new and off-road subaru.. Mybe he's talking about the concept XV, which is just a lifted OBS. But a factory "lifted" OBS with 09-10 forester ground clearance numbers (i.e. 8.9") is pretty cool!!

Anyone know more?

here's a quick autoblog link

it looks pretty cool.

though i would never be able to afford one when/if they bring em out onto the market..

i hope they have low range..... is all i can say:-\

i hope they make the cvt strong enough. most do not like sudden jolts and will snap the internal chain on the cvt.

but, the diesel option sounds good.

looks cool. maybe a bit "rounder/softer" and a hair bigger than id have liked.

kinda has that CLOSET-MINIVAN thing going like a chrysler pacifica or the newest durangos and grand cherokees. too..... uhhhh soft. cant think of the word i want. androgynous, maybe.

i like definition. angles. lean and mean, not these shapeless blobs.

maybe the soft continuos curve of the roofline was just to make a stronger "egg" frame. a long swept curve is always stronger than a dozen sharp angles.

at least pound for pound. 80s volvos may be strong frames, but they also weigh more than a greyhound bus.

I think the CVT and a diesel would be amazing offroad.assuming the CVT had a "low" mode...

Had a local Subaru club member see one of these this weekend in person

low mode? isnt that the whole point of the CVT? the fact that it has high and low and EVERY possible gear in between? its like having a hundred speed automatic transmission.

Between a very low ratio and torque converter the idea of a CVT is amazing. Ultimate offfroad transmission, BUT. How well can the CVT hold up to good hard abuse?

Off roading puts a lot of abuse on a transmission. Wheel spin, sudden grab, more wheel spin, repeat. Lots of running slowly winding up the TQ makes a lot of heat, etc.

With the CVT you wont need a D/R trans.

Especially if it comes with the deisel

There is a minimum and max gear ratio, everything inbetween is variable.

Lets be serious, how many sooby owners off road (sadly).

But what I have to say is WOW. It fixes everything that I hate outabout the new outback and leggo line and could be a Blu replacement in oh ... 10 years :)

Oh, it'll be fine for 99.99% of the population. Especially so for the next 10 years while nobody who's going to mod it seriously for offroad can afford one.

But when they come of age, is that transmission going to hold up?

Well since I dont think there is anyone here that has bouyught a new CVT will know by then :)

i want the same package, with a pickup bed, dangit!!

it'd be like a bigger beefier brat, circa 2012.

but NOT a tiny bed, ala baja, ridgeline, or any of those other useless beds.

its gotta be big enough for being practical. 5'6" or so. like a brat.

any thoughts on the possibility of that ever happening?

Not really an off-roader, but an "urban adventure" ute

But we'll get it in 2013 at least...

Precisely why I'm moving this. It has no business in the off road forum.

The add even calls the pos an "all road" vehicle. Jokemobile.

pretty cool !

about 10 years i can afford it

i see it has boxer diesel. would great with a 6 speed manual, even better with a 7 speed

... It fixes everything that I hate outabout the new outback and leggo line...

I Think the Same!

Coming to America 2013!!...

The Subaru XV Diesel came to Latin America since 2010, but it wasn't Lifted Yet:

The Lifted one (New Version), will come in January 2012:

I Believe one of the Reasons for the Delay of introducing the Boxer Diesel to the U.S.A. is the Many problems that Diesel engine has given, Many Premature Fails, as you can Read in this Forums:

Let me Translate a Couple of Posts from that Spanish Forums (using google online translator):

I have a problem with a Subaru Legacy Boxer Diesel, has 15 months with an engine failure at low and they could not find the solution, and they are laughing at me every time...

...suffered a major breakdown. A bushing defective crankshaft broke up, after 2800 km, I demanded a new engine of course. The customer responsible Subaru Spain convince me, lies in between, that is sufficient to change the block, to accept, he offered two years additional warranty.

Three days after picking up the vehicle and cataclonch!. A violent stop. Went the official service crane again, two long weeks without knowing anything and then a phone call to say that this time I am not covered under warranty, this new damage, without further explanation.

Seems like the Problems they have are related to the Diesel engine Only...

I Hope that Subaru will Refine it more soon.

Kind Regards.
