December 29, 201411 yr So I went out and bought some nice 16" rims on brand new tires. Little did I know subarus lug pattern is 4x140 and not 4x100 or 4x114 like I needed. Does anyone know if I can redrill my rims to fit the 4x140 pattern? They are universal 4 lug so they already have 4x100 and 4x114 bolt holes. Can I do this myself? Difficulty?
December 29, 201411 yr Bummer, if this was me i would resell what you bought. Wouldn't be worth trying to redrill because it might ruin the rims and you couldn't sell them. Just my .2
December 29, 201411 yr Might want to try and return them. More trouble than its worth and the chance of screwing it up and winding up with four very large paper weights is high.
December 29, 201411 yr I wouldn't redrill the rims but you could redrill the hubs and drums to 114. Its been done before with good results.I believe it was Loyale 2.7 Turbo who did it.
December 29, 201411 yr I wouldn't redrill the rims but you could redrill the hubs and drums to 114. Its been done before with good results.I believe it was Loyale 2.7 Turbo who did it. Yes, I done that in year 1996. Since then my Subaru "BumbleBeast" has been working Flawlessly. First I done it to the old rear drums, then I went with Rear Discs. Here are a couple of photos for you: ~► http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/122276-the-bumble-beast/?do=findComment&comment=1044257 Kind Regards.
December 29, 201411 yr Author That looks like the rout I'd want to go. How difficult is it to redrill the hubs? And what about the drum brakes in the rear?
December 31, 201411 yr ... Little did I know subarus ... ... How difficult is it to redrill the hubs? And what about the drum brakes in the rear? Sincerely, if you are a Newbie in Mechanics, I kindly suggest you to take the Hubs and Drums, along one of the New Rims you have, plus new Lugs, to a specialized lathe shop, and let them do the Job for you. I am not being disrespectful, but doing such work wrong, could be Dangerous for your Safety and / or you might end with a bouncing car with non-centered rims. Kind Regards.
January 1, 201511 yr Author I have some experience in mechanics as iv been rebuilding engines for the past few years but I'm far from an expert. So I'm not too intimidated by the re drill. Couldn't I take off my hubs, knock the studs out, line them up flush with my hub centric rims, and mark where the new bolt holes would be? Would this center them properly?
January 2, 201511 yr ... Couldn't I take off my hubs, knock the studs out, line them up flush with my hub centric rims, and mark where the new bolt holes would be? Would this center them properly? Not exactly. The Center Round metal on the Hubs & Drums, which is intended for centering the Rims, is Huge on these older Subarus, intended for a big round opening in the center of Subaru's 4X140 Rims, and usually the aftermarket Rims in smaller lug patterns, such like 4X114.3 or 4X100, does Not has that size of opening on their center holes; so, in case the center holes on your new rims are smaller than the subaru's rims, you still will need to take those Hubs & Drums to a Lathe Shop, to let them reduce their diameter to fit the new Rims center hole size. Kind Regards.
January 2, 201511 yr Author Thanks for the clarification, I feel that that iv gained some knowledge here. Thanks everyone for the advice! Il post pics of my loyale with the wheels when I get everything squared away
January 2, 201511 yr Thanks for the clarification... You're Welcome. Don't forget to share Photos here. Kind Regards.
January 2, 201511 yr I am not for sure why this has never become a popular modification. It seems like it should be fairly straight forward job with the only thing that needs to be farmed out is the lathe work to mill the hub for the center of the wheel. Maybe someone needs to document it well enough so that anyone can do it ( lots of photos ).
January 2, 201511 yr ... the only thing that needs to be farmed out is the lathe work to mill the hub for the center of the wheel. ... I Agree. I would made a photo guided Writeup, but I didn't had a Camera on 1996. However, there are some other USMB Members who does such conversion, for a fee. My friend Scott in Bellingham, offers such modifications for sale. ~► www.SJRLift.com ~► http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/131565-sjr-full-time/page-3 Also, there are adaptor plates to change the lug pattern. Kind Regards.
January 17, 201511 yr i did the 4-6 lug 140 conversion with help of my friend who has a automotive machine shop it went well and i have a large choice of wheels to use. after i get my 4in lift ill go a little bigger but Id do the 6-lug conversion as its easier.
January 17, 201511 yr ... do the 6-lug conversion as its easier. Yes, it is Easier, but he has This Problem: So I went out and bought some nice 16" rims on brand new tires... He already has the New Rims with another four lug pattern. Kind Regards.
February 3, 201511 yr how much is too much for a set of 15" Peugeot rims would one say? It depends on many variables, such like the wheels' condition, if they're Luxury alloys or simple steelies, if they comes with tires and / or lugs, etc...
February 3, 201511 yr Might want to try and return them. More trouble than its worth and the chance of screwing it up and winding up with four very large paper weights is high. The chance you could end up in a crumpled heap along side the road is also high, when one of your wheels falls off. Sell the wheels and get the right ones or look for some wheel spacer adepter plates that will bold to the subaru lugs and then to the wheels. Edited February 4, 201511 yr by Fish-N-Fool
February 3, 201511 yr Except that Subarus already have a very large offset, and putting on spacers thick enough for this moves the wheels out a long way.
February 4, 201511 yr That's why a Lug pattern Re-drill on the Hubs / Drums is the Best way to go ... In my Own humble Opinion. Already has passed almost two decades of non-stop use and abuse, of my Subaru "BumbleBeast" without any issue related to the Re-drill job I did. ... ... Kind Regards.
February 4, 201511 yr Except that Subarus already have a very large offset, and putting on spacers thick enough for this moves the wheels out a long way. That's what fender flares are for
March 3, 201511 yr 6 lug redrill, the easier and safer thing to do. Checkout the video below. Find a buyer for the rims you've already got, get yourself some 6 lug rims and you are good to go. Totally works for me and was very easy to do.
March 4, 201511 yr Great Link to a Great Video.. Thanks for putting that on here.. we need to put that as a "Sticky" Somewhere... This is sooo much easier then finding Peugot rims.... 6 lug rims are everywhere in salvage yards cheep too.
