Ticking Moter? heres the trick..

Featured Replies

This was a great discouvery, does your subaru tick? comes and goes but ticks most of the time? the reason this happeneds is when the seals in the oil pump start getting old and drying out alowing oil to pass by rather then pump it up

Simple fix for around $20 is change the seals in your oil pump, when ever I change the belts or water pump (since your in there anyway) change the oil pump seals too..

Use a very thin coat of silcon helps hold the seals in the oil pump while installing it..

Make sure you use oil seals from Subaru only, some things are OK to buy aftermarket for your Subaru but things like Oil Seals & Head Gaskets are not 1 of them..

Hey Caleb, remember your first week on the board????? Just giving you a bad time $ubaroo 'cause your new :) . We call it the "Micky Mouse" gasket from it distinctive shape. Later, tim

Never had a ticking valve train that SeaFoam wouldnt fix! :D

not if its a soild lifter EA-81, only way to stop the ticking is too adjust the valves. it might help but it won't go away

Oil pump gaskets don't always fix the EA82 lifters. Although it's always the first place to start looking. Sometimes you actually have to replace the oil pump, or even some of the lifters. It's nice if it does work tho.

Seafoam does work......if you can find it.....

We got it all over in these parts. Almost every store I walk into has it.

My 2nd post here ever, I just wanted to say hi and offer a helpful tip already I get this in PM:

This is not a slam or a dis of any kind. But, just about everyone knows about the oil pump reseal. This board has been around for along time, and so have some people and thier cars. There is actually more to ticking lifters besides the oil pump reseal, you just need to do a search. We do appreciate any information that has baffled the best minds on the USMB, just make sure its not old news first.

Is it just me? Read my post about (ticking moters) and then I recive this private message, Am I over reacting would you find this offensive too?

I wouldnt find it offensive, but they were right. Ticking motors are something every Subaru owner has dealt with. There are plenty of ways to do it, from running MMO or AT Fluid in the crank for a few seconds, to completly rebuilding your oil pump and re-building the Hydrolic lifters as well.

I woudlnt take it offensive though, we welcome you to the board and definatly want you to stay. Dont let a couple sour apples ruin it for you.

The first time my Subaru started ticking, it scared the hell out of me. Oddly enough, it's never ticked since... I think it was mad that I didn't put premium in it the night before :) . Sounds like a Diesel truck.

Sounds to me like Turbone was trying NOT to offend you by PM'ing it to you. He is correct in that there are several steps which can be taken in stopping ticking - from flushing/Marvel Mystery oil (in case it is a particle blocking a passage) to resealing the pump (if Mickey has failed) to replacing the pump (if it is failing) to replacing the seal to the valvetrain to disassembling the lifters themselves, cleaning and replacing.

Do a search for "lifter noise" or "ticking" or such and you will find many threads hashing over these fixes. That's why you got the PM and the various spanks on this thread - it was kind of like walking into a proctologists convention and saying, "Hey! You can stay cleaner if you wear gloves when you do exams!"

Just remember - search first, ask questions later. And don't be embarrassed! I posted not too long ago that a friend of mine had put Peugeot rims on his wagon and asked if anyone else knew about this trick. Got some kind spankings that told me they were what everyone calls "pugs" on this board, and indeed everyone had known about it (but me) since God was a boy.

I agree with partsman.

I also came in here with prior sube know how just like your self and proceded to state the obvious.:o

I was going to do the same as turbone and let you know privately so as to prevent embarasment. dont take all this wrong. welcome to the board. its good to have some more experience among our numbers.

now if you can tell me why it appears I have a bent valve after a timing belt broke I will salute you.:-\

Do you have that custom cam grind with EXTRA lift?

Or perhaps you were at 10k and the valve was flying into interference?

OR - you got the ONE motor that Fuji built that was interference (secret project - very hush-hush)

OR - you got the ONE motor that Fuji built that was interference (secret project - very hush-hush)

that must be the one:lol:

no motor was only doing about 2000 rpm cruising up to a light

no funny cams

this should be in my other post actually

continue breakin in the new guy. hi jacking complete.

and in a nissan, mom's, thin oil makes the tick go away

and I hardly drive a nissan, they are annoyingly uncomfortable for the short guy
