Off-road Justys?

After reading the Justy post earlier this week, I got to wondering,

Has anyone Off-roaded a Justy:confused:

Do they have Dual Range Trannys?

Do they lend themselves to "GL-DL" off-roading/modifications?

I know someone in the NW was looking to put ATV tires on one but I don't know who or if they ever did?

Comments, THoughts?

I've seen a few Justy's come through the bone yards. A few MPFI 1.3L, a few TBI 1.3L, one RS with pushbutton 4WD, and one ECVT 4WD. Truely odd little creatures.

So it's a 3 cyl with a snowmobile tranny? This sounds like Monster Garage material!

"Subaru-Isuzu Automotive Inc. (SIA), a joint venture with Isuzu Motors Ltd., established in the United States"

Is Subaru still in bed with Isuzu?

In some respects, yes. They own a joint manufacturing facility in the midwest that produces both brands.

Isuzu makes some good stuff - the old troopers were nearly unkillable, and they make an extremely durable small deisel engine for generators and such. So good in fact that the US military uses them for the newer TQG's (Tactically Quiet Generator) that are replacing the noisy generators they have been using since Korea....

(can you tell I was a generator mechanic in the Army? hehe)

I have two old troopers and love em!

But I had no idea they were linked to Subaru? (accept they both had head gasket problems:lol: )

It now makes some sense, The Isuzu 6cyl was the chevy S-10, Chevy is now a part of Subaru. Wow It's all one big auto firm

Sorry about hijacking my post.

my parents own an isuzu rodeo... its a great truck but my dad got pissed when he found out Isuzu was owned my GM... but here is an interesting thing... isuzu got pissed off at GM and left them... isuzu has no more representation in Canada...

so you guys up here in Canada with me who like isuzu... you gotta go to the states or buy a used one... but ya... isuzu has nothing to do with subaru as far as i know...

and the thing about the off-road justy... it's not worth it... its not as powerful, it's got worse suspention and its only a single range...

but rally! they are great for rally... if you wanna make a rally justy it would be cool... but for off-roading... go for a GL or DL... or maybe even a brat!

I've been thinking about this... there's a guy at the end of my street who has a cool yellow justy with some funky 4wd graphics. I'd lift it with blocks that let you bolt on the ea81 driveline stuff with a weber.

I know team 555 used a justy rally car for the African Rally ( mid 1990s ) a very rough course for a rally. Colin McRay drove it back when he drove the Turbo Legacy just before the Impeza came out.He had a DNF if I remember correctly. Seemed Like a cool little car though.

I suppose the 4wd drivetrain out of another transverse 4wd car could be transplanted, like a 4wd toyota tercel motor. You could probably get everything you need for $100 from a rustbucket donor tercel. Or you could go all the way and an awd mitsu v6.

sorry, but you're wrong, the toyota tercel has an inline 4, not transverse, and offers 4wd and super low for first only, so you might as well not bother

I found a 88 justy, complete in the jy, looked to be carbed, tried to buy it, but "we don't sell those cars"

you might have luck with one of the imported for plymouth, imported for dodge, imported for chrysler colt vista econobox., which is a mitsubishi

We have two Justy's one with a blown motor. We are thinking about cutting out the fenders and mounting 12" tractor tires on it. It is plenty powerful for use around the farm when all it will be in is 4wd 1st gear anyways. We also plan on cutting the top off behind the seats and building a flat dump bed for hauling wood, and fencing and other crap like that.

What about the Mitsu 4g63 or the mazda B6T? Transversely mounted, awd trannys and turbo'd!

Just a Justy:

the isuzu canada thingy... are you sure there is still an izuzu, saab, saturn... it happened fairly recently... as in a few months ago... they might just be trying to get rid of old merchandise...

i didn't here this directly from isuzu... i heard it from a nissan dealership... the guy used to work for isuzu so i still don't really know if it is true... but i haven't seen any new isuzus around...

maybe it is different on the east coast...

  • 3 months later...

Hey I am new here, and was doin some cruseing and found this topic, here in NC you can get a decent justy for about 300-400 bucks so this intregued me. I have herd from somewhere that the justy uses a the same engine as the suzukie swift and geo metro though I am not too sure about this. If so could you not swap a 4cyl from a swift Gti? that would make for one fun beater.
