May 12, 20187 yr I just did a clutch replacement on a 1984 4WD GL. I replaced the rear main engine seal, and the orange gasket featured in this video It looks like the oil pan gasket is leaking, and also I have some oil in the clutch housing. Can oil leaking from the oil pan gasket migrate up into the clutch housing? The bottom of the clutch bell housing is open. I am hoping it can, it would be an easy fix. Otherwise, I am looking at fixing a leak in the transmission. Edited May 12, 20187 yr by mkoch
May 12, 20187 yr Author Thank you skishop69. Can I replace the oil pan gasket without removing the engine? I have a hoist to lift it a few inches.
May 12, 20187 yr Yep. An inch or so is all you need IIRC. I used ultra grey on my pan something like 10 years ago. still dry.
May 12, 20187 yr Skishop, you dont say whether you removed whole sump pan, cleaned it up then glued it up, or did you simply smear ultra grey over existing seal between pan and block?
May 13, 20187 yr You have to remove the pan. Just putting rtv on the outside would be like putting a bandaid on a gunshot.
May 13, 20187 yr Correct. I removed the pan, put an bead around it about an 1/8" thick. I put the pan back on finger tight, gave it 24 hours to cure and then tightened it with the ratchet. No gasket at all. Edited May 14, 20187 yr by skishop69
May 13, 20187 yr You don't need to lift the engine typically on the EA81's. Don't use a gasket. Just use Three Bond 1217H. GD
May 14, 20187 yr I've never touched one of those little or age seal things in the back of the crank on an ea81. I've always been told to leave them. Are you sure the rear seal was put in correctly? I've never heard of a sump gasket saturating the clutch in oil. And I've usually found the oil pump is the culprit as the reason for an oil saturated sump gasket. Not saying that the sump gasket will never leak, just that it's worth investigating the oil pump thoroughly. Cheers Bennie
