WARNING: STUPID QUESTION

i dont know what type of gear oil was in my tranny last, but it is in dire need of a refill. probly use a 90w140 or sumthin fer it, is it bad to mix oil types?

because this is the post for stupid questions, here is another. what does the oil rating mean? e.g. 75w90

75W90 is what the manual calls for. If you have an older transmission with slightly worn synchros I would suggest the Redline 75W90NS which will help shifting somewhat.

engine oil 0 5 7.5 10 20 25 30 40 50 60

gear oil . . 70 75 77.5 80 85 90 115 140

above numbers in viscosity, resistance to flow, when measured at 100 *C

do NOT mix types of gear oil, as severe reactions from the additives

may result in the replacement of your transmission, or other areas

I recomend you obtain a copy of John Deere "OIL SALES GUIDE" DKE7413

That's not stupid at all. Stupid would have been to put the wrong stuff in even though you weren't sure.

im pretty sure i can handle an oil change (esp. since ive done it before), just as long as i dont try to do an engine swap or something. im not that crazy...yet.

;)

Well, keeping on topic but going on a small tangent...Whats the census on using the synthetics for trannies and diffs? Or even some of the additives they have out there. I have heard some good things about the additives like Lucas and such.

the benefit of synthetics is the extended change interval for OTR trucks, with 100,000 mile change intervals

do not use additves, as they are not necessary with a good oil

in keeping with the subject - and since I dont have an owners manual to check...what weight gear oil should one use in a tranny in the northern climes...temps will be dropping to the neighborhood of -30 F over the winter....

and how often is it supposed to be changed?????
