September 14, 200421 yr My turbo wagon starts and runs fine now. The shop I had rebuild my motor put the plug wires in the wrong spots on the disty. Now I have a new problem. The car has NO power before 2700rpm. I think it has to do with the ignition, but I'm not sure. We set the timing at 15* BTDC and it ran the same way, but with less power. We advanced it to about 20* BTDC and it is the same, but a little more power. I cannot even drive up a slight grade! The vacuum advance is hooked up as is all the ignition stuff. One question I had is about setting the timing. This tag under the hood http://usmb.net/gallery/album215/IMG_08262?full=1 says to disconnect the 2-pole connector under the coil. This: http://usmb.net/gallery/album215/IMG_08282?full=1 Is the only connector with 2 poles that I can see anywhere around the coil. Can anyone help me? P.S. It also backfires a little. Not HUGE backfires, but noticable skips in the idle.
September 14, 200421 yr what sparkplugs are you using? check to make sure the timing indicator is installed correctly
September 14, 200421 yr Author I'm using NGK plugs. A tooth on the disty might be it, I'll have to check. Any other thoughts?
September 14, 200421 yr I would make sure the disty matches the #1 TDC. If not, reset it. Check all the plug wires and firing order, again.
September 14, 200421 yr You have the right connector. Disconnecting it disables the 5 degree ignition advance at altitudes above 4600 ft. Makes no difference when setting timing at sea level. If you are able to set timing to 15-20 degrees ,you are not a tooth off. I would check the centrifugal advance.
September 14, 200421 yr Author Well, I lined up the crank to TDC and the disty was pointing at #1 on the disty cap. This car is getting on my nerves! How do I check the centerfical advance?
September 14, 200421 yr Well, I lined up the crank to TDC and the disty was pointing at #1 on the disty cap. This car is getting on my nerves! How do I check the centerfical advance? Easy,Disconnect the vac. advance hose,Watch the timing mark w/light. If timing advances w/rpm increase centrifugal advance is working.
September 15, 200421 yr Author Actually Matt, I don't know how you felt, because it FRIGGIN WORKS!!!! I LOVE this car! It has sooooooo much power! This has to have been the least powerful, yet funnest car I have ever driven! I love it, I love it, I love it, I love it, I love it, I love it, I love it!!!
September 15, 200421 yr Author Well the shop I had rebuild my engine put the plug wires on wrong. They were arranged 1-4-2-3, waaaaaay off, I know. Then my dad changed them to 1-2-3-4. Silly old man! I figured that he had them right and I spent half the day trying to set the timing on a car that couldn't hold a stedy idle with the timing light connected! Now its done, and its the best car EVER! Matt, you missed out!
September 15, 200421 yr Yaa... My car did run with the turbo engine and the 5spd d/r the problem was getting it threw emissions and such. So i went the much cheaper route and just put in a ea81 with a weber.
September 15, 200421 yr Author Yeah, yeah, yeah... Cheaper... I'm really happy that I kept the car the way it came from the factory, it is such a hoot to drive! I'm not making full boost though. 6psi instead of 7psi. I'll have to look at the manual to see if anything else can be adjusted.
