Does anyone know for sure if this model has a timing belt or chain? It is non-turbo, 5sp manual tranny. thx!

I beleive it's neither....direct gear driven

thx guys, I never would have guessed. Is there any sort of periodic maint. I need to do for that? Car now has 140k miles on it. thx.

140k miles? That's still virtually brand new. Mine had 220k when the body finally rusted away, and it still ran fine. Just keep changing the oil regularly.

if anything at all give it a valve lash adjustment and new valve cover gaskets.

keep oil in it and dont let it overheat. check the condition of the radiator and water pump.

as long as you drive it everyday it will always run. dont let it sit and rot out!

This gets me thinking....which does hurt, yes. Anyway, if the direct gear driven timing system works so well, why did they change to timing belts that have to be replaced?:-\

because posh rod engines have very low rpm capabilities and it is more efficient to have the cams directly on the valves

Many automakers in the continuing quest to minimize NVH ( noise vibration harshness ) also eliminate gear drives since they tend to produce noise.

Also same reason most auto makers use a timing belt instead of a timing chain.

But they are now going back to chains - the new Audi V8's are all chain drive. I guess they can get something they need from doing that. Better for the customer tho - less maintenace.

Timing belts are cheaper to manufacture than gears.
