April 21, 200619 yr Oops... I met up with 2 wranglers, one with a 3" lift & mudders, the other was pretty stock. Anyhow.. we did some pretty tough stuff, but it was all a good time, but i guess i managed to smash my oilpan pretty good... because when i got home i found this: I'm going to see if i can take it off, and maybe TIG weld it up very carefully.. it's just a small pin-hole... is this a bad idea? or should i just go get a new one ($100 bucks.. blah)... Got the car very muddy, and the jeep guys were VERY impressed with it's capabilities. Oh well.. i guess that's more modivation to finnish the bumper/skidplate, right?
April 21, 200619 yr Author Get a used replacement one. Get a couple actually already posted in the market place
April 21, 200619 yr I have several good used ones. I'll do you right. I may have a spare skid plate as well. PM me with your e-mail.
April 22, 200619 yr I beleive those are somekind of steel if i am not mistaken if not i am amazed mine has not broke yet. I bang mine on huge rocks and stuff all the time and the most that has happened is a small golfball size dent.
April 22, 200619 yr already posted in the market place Just here? Try NASIOC, I-club, RS25, local subaru shops, local junk yards, etc. etc. I'm lucky in that I have a recycler AND a Pick + pull that I could walk into and get a oilpan no problemo for cheap...
April 22, 200619 yr my buddy had a return line welded onto his oil pan for when he added a turbo....so it can be done I'm soooo protective of my oil pan, it can really keep my abilities limited, cause I'm worried about doing that to my oil pan, or worse
April 22, 200619 yr I run with out a skid plate with my lifted wagon. hehe, the only dent in it is from when I had to put a jack under it to pull my engine when I blew up my pilot bearing. There are tough oil pans. I'm pretty sure they are thin layer'd steel.
April 23, 200619 yr Now you got me worried about my transmission oil pan! your oil pan is located on your engine (the bottom to be exact), but you knew that;)
April 23, 200619 yr I've got a skid plate on the engine, but the 4EAT oil pan is bare. Sorry for the confusion.
April 23, 200619 yr that looks similar to the damage i did to my pan awhile back, but i did mine on my driveway entrance.pulled in just a little to fast and then BANG... of course now that i do have a skid-plate,i haven't had a need for it........(yet)
April 23, 200619 yr if you havent found one yet, blackbart(frank) in PA has several for sale. good guy, done lots of business with him.
April 23, 200619 yr be careful of the threads on the EJ oil pans, they are tac welded in and don't like bashing. somehow and two of my pans have failed after being smashed/hing up on the drain plug, one at the beach and one in the mtns. my bigger problem is my gas tanks in my 91' legcacy, I lost over two gallons of capactiy in two days of high desert, no leaks as of yet though.
April 24, 200619 yr It's made of aluminum right? Magnet; ferrous material will stick. Aluminum is non-ferrous,no stick...
April 24, 200619 yr Author Magnet; ferrous material will stick. Aluminum is non-ferrous,no stick... hey.. now why didn't i think of that.. i just took e-mag last semester i was going with the 'let's see if it starts to rust' approch.. d'oh!
April 24, 200619 yr I've welded up a hold in a gas tank but never an oil pan...but know people that have...plus it's alot cheaper to weld it up than to buy another pan...but good idea to have an extra just in case of bad damage. ~~Lucas
April 25, 200619 yr Well, they're not the same but, they can be made to work. I did this about two months ago and so did someone else on the board. Pretty easy to mod to fit. The front mounting holes need to be widened. In the rear, you can lenghten the holes or add a small piece of metal to extend it. (I did the latter; other guy on the board took the "smarter, easier" route.) Sorry to hear about the oilpan!
April 25, 200619 yr Andy. Contact Aaron's Auto Wrecking here in Seattle. 1-800-541-7271. They're a Soob only J/Y. Ask for Tom or Lenny. Tell 'em who told you to call and where you heard about it. Might help with the price and shipping time. They ship btw. It'll be the right part, don't jimmy rig your imp. EZ
April 25, 200619 yr I had someone weld up my pan with it still on the car. He opened the oil filler cap so there would be somewhere for the pressure to go and it worked fine.
