June 16, 200619 yr Could it put more strain on the tranny if I install my LSD? I had to break a front CV today cause im too poor to buy a new one... so i will be runnin the Hatch in RWD mode for a while. I noticed the rear end likes to peel out alot, so I have this 3.9 LSD sitting here... and was wondering if it would be too much for the tranny if i installed it? -Brian
June 16, 200619 yr Author WOW THIS THING CAME WITH A WARRANTY!!! Thanks Jeremy, i'll remember that I think im just gonna stick with the open diff for now. After thinking about it, I can see how it will put excessive strain on either the clutch packs or the tranny... I can wait. -Brian
June 17, 200619 yr it will only put strain on the clutch or tranny if you start to peel out.....but i dont think it is a problem, your tranny can take it....as long as you dont abuse the crap out of it. ~Josh~
June 17, 200619 yr Author hahaha... i abuse my subarus! Dont feel like doing a tranny swap when i install my lift, think i'll just stay open for now. -Brian
June 17, 200619 yr Man you wussy! I drove around in my '78 Brat with a FE 1600 in there and would roast them off with my line lock on all the time! Also would drift it like a madman and never had any problems with clutches or trannys.
June 17, 200619 yr nope but it did have a open 3.90 that posied every time I took off:D Made it a little hard to drive in a straight line when the back end was facing a different direction:grin:
June 17, 200619 yr That's one thing I have noticed about my hatch in RWD- it likes to be sideways. What's really fun is hitting my road at about 30-35 in second, floor it, and go right sideways. The fun of living on a dirt road........ Oh yeah, is it just mine, or do all these cars handle ten times better as a rear drive?
June 17, 200619 yr Author No, its not you. I also believe fuel milage is better. Im about to test that with a road trip to reno tomorrow. -Brian
June 17, 200619 yr My Brat D/R was great when it was RWD. The 8 forward gears are sweet and the car's a blast to slide around in. Downshifts combined w/ proper cornering is a pretty fun way to turn. I think an LSD would make it more fun.
June 17, 200619 yr WOW THIS THING CAME WITH A WARRANTY!!! Thanks Jeremy, i'll remember that -Brian Yeah a 6 mile warranty. After that its all you buddy!!
June 17, 200619 yr I plan to put a single range in my Brat (street use only) and might put my RWD conversion kit in it (if I can get the damn thing to stay running).
June 17, 200619 yr Brian, sounds like you're experiencing an everyday occurence that happened to us "old timers" during the time when almost every car was rear drive..some of the V8 Mustangs and Firebeirds of the 60's were especially fun (so were no-guts Volkswagens, but in a different way:brow: ), Powerslide City at every corner, yahoo!!

Heh, I miss my Camaro:(
June 17, 200619 yr please tell me that you didnt have a mullet when you had your camaro...... ~Josh~ Umm no, thats just plain wrong in so many ways. One of my Camaros is worth upwards of $18,000 so there's no mullet driving in it.

Just be fully aware that the car will handle differently nipper
June 18, 200619 yr One of my Camaros is worth upwards of $18,000 so there's no mullet driving in it. Thats the police package one? Thats pretty cool, but is it in $18k condition right now, hehe. I know my cars aren't!
June 18, 200619 yr so you say RWD subie handles better then FWD? I haven't tried it so I won't contest it. But I still believe you can go faster around corners in 4WD then either FWD or RWD. I love my subie in 4WD. I also don't care about the gearbox much. I can always get a old wreck off ebay for a "new" gearbox.

Yes, that would be the one and yes, it is in a $18,000 condition right now. Actually, value of the car as it sits is $18,883 according to the dealership a couple years ago. Fully restored.... upwards of $45,000:eek:

I stripped a front hub in my hatch about a year ago and had to drive 10 miles home in 4-hi. Those things handle awesome in RWD. If I didn't love my 4wd so much I would have converted the thing.
