January 10, 200422 yr what was the size for the ea82 flaps that were to protect the drive shaft boots
January 12, 200422 yr Author yes, the little black rectangles that have two holes I have no flaps, but want to make some
January 12, 200422 yr I've never seen or heard of these flaps of which you speak. Could you explain just where they are and how they work?
January 12, 200422 yr I think they are attached to the rear suspension, and about 4in square. They are supposed to protect the rear axle inner DOJ. And sorry, no. I'm not crawling under my car to measure it. Rob
January 12, 200422 yr I have seen the mounts for them, but never actually seen the flap. Maybe I will have to look a little hrder next time I'm at the yard.
January 14, 200422 yr Author does anyone know the sizes for the inner and outer flaps, nearest 1/4in.? are they available for the front?
January 14, 200422 yr There's no need to make them exact - in fact the Aussies often enlarge them to better protect the boots while off-roading. GD
January 14, 200422 yr The manual doesnt show them on the suspension, so they must be on the body. Rob
January 14, 200422 yr There on my RX and there on the Turbo wagon. But the rx ones are after market but I think the mounting brackets are factory. I don't know the size but I will be under the car tomorrow and i'll check for ya, unless someone else figures it out.
January 14, 200422 yr Robs right, they are about 4 inches square, I don't have a tape measure right now though, so I couldn't be exact. For those that have never seen em before, you can see em in this picture: There is one on the far left, you can see a little of it, the one just to the left of the diff, and the one on the far right (the T on the tire is pointing at it.) They attach to the torsion tube on the EA81's, but I have seen em on 4WD EA82's too.
January 17, 200422 yr Wow, what a great idea! I never was sure just what the heck those brackets were for. Maybe I'll make some up. Does anybody know if these things actually work? I would imagine that they would at least prevent damage from branches and small debris that gets flung up from time to time.
January 17, 200422 yr Oops! I figured sense the pic of it was posted like 10 minutes after I said that, that the question was answered. If u make something up like 5" x 4" it would work wouldn't it?
January 17, 200422 yr As GD was saying, some Aussi's have made big rubber flaps to protect their boots from trail and rock damage. I myself have never ripped a healthy boot on rocks or logs but maybe I haven't tried hard enough. I guess I almost trashed an axle once but my mustache bars hit the log first. I bet flying rocks from gravel roads are the main reason for the OEM flaps. Here's the flap pics that are on http://www.subaclub.com./ (in the "tech" section.)
January 17, 200422 yr okay - now go forth and be fruitful and gain some rubberized mudflap material and some scissors and awl's cut, puncture and bolt 'um up folks.
January 18, 200422 yr Author proboably going to cut up a junk tire from a pug wide baler belting would work, convenient sizes
