General Non-Soob discussion

  1. Started by curtisbad,

has anyone ever owned an AMC Eagle? do they make decent vehicles? my son is soon to inherit my lifted 97 legacy and i'm kicking around the idea of maybe getting myself an old eagle. either that or a forester. i've already done the lifted soobie thing , i think i'd like to try something else this time around. any input on the old AMC's would be appreciated. curtis

  2. Im just curious if anyone on here has stories of towing certain things with their subarus or other vehicles that should not have been able to be towed by that vehicle. For instance heres a couple of mine. A bit ago my mazda b2200 ran out of gas in my field and of course at the time i had no gas and not only that my chevy truck and my buggy didnt have any either and my parents cars were all gone at the time so all i had to tow with was an 86 tt350.... dirtbike. I hooked it up to the back bumper and strapped the tow rop the a metal mount on the fender of the bike (thank god 80s dirtbikes are made strong) and slowly started going forward constantly feathering the clutch …

at least in a 215/70R14 pretty much a BFG Radial TA, or a Firestone Firehawk Indy 500... a few other brands, but pickens is slim... so I picked up some 15's with decent front tires (will have to replace rear tires) as a temp solution until I get my 15" Rally II's painted...

So because guido is down, bills are due and the truck drank so much fuel i resorted to drastic measures. Sold the truck, paid off some bills and saved some money asside for guidos repair bill. So what now, well i had to get something to get me to work, bus doesnt run at 1 in the morning. Friend of mine had this thing. 1992 Buick Lesabre with 3800 motor. To say this thing is a turd is an understatement. Ive just began sorting through the cheep problems. 1st off it had no brakes because its been sitting for a few years, was covered in tree sap and leaves. Inside was grungy, cd player had a cd stuck in it, no door or trunk key, only 1 working window. So first thi…

Actually, I washed the whole car. But this is an ongoing process for my sister, who doesnt like how Subarus look Anyway, before and after pics of the wheels. Im going to be spray painting the chrome black, she doesnt like the black/chrome look. Anyone had luck just spraying over chrome or should I prep it? Before (notice the brown spots near the inside of the rim, its like rust or brake dust thats corroded the chrome. After PS Castile Soap + Steel Wool or Kerosene + Steel Wool yields excellent results!

So it looks like im not the only one who misses or wants a subaru brat these days. I saw this little 2 door chevy s 10 today with 2 bucket seats bolted into the back of the bed to look like the jumper seats in a brat. Even though your all going to say im a brat wannabe if i do this i honestly though that was cool and am contemplating whether it would be worth it to try on my mazda b2200 to make the thing a little less boring. What im mainly wonder is if it would be legal to have passengers on the road in the seats (probly not) but then again that never stopped me . So what is everyones thought on this?

  9. I realize JB weld is an option. It's a small hole so maybe I'll consider it later but would rather here comments on a proper repair. My Kubota tractor has a small bubbling leak right where the top radiator inlet (for the hose) connects to the top metal tank. How nice of it to leak with easy access, when does that ever happen!? ! I have a welder but not sure what kind of metal I got here. Not sure if radiator materials are standard or how I can check, if I can weld it, etc? Radiator shops are sparse and out of the way where I live.

  10. I am having problems with my 96 GMC Suburban and can't seem to get help elsewhere. It has a bad miss under load, it seems intermittant, and I cant track it down. I have done the basic tune up things, Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, fuel filter, vacuum leak check, inspection of wiring harnesses to sensors. No CEL, no codes when scanned. The engine is a 454. here is a link the forum where I was trying to get help. http://www.truckforum.org/forums/chevy-truck-forum/29368-chevy-454-engine-in-96-gmc-suburban-miss.html#post201331 as of my last posting I had 57 reads and no replies. If anyone has ideas let me know. This is my truck I use to tow a camper from VA…

  11. So a bit ago i was riding my 1986 tt350 and the chain broked and slashed through the transmisson case (better that then my leg). I was able to get a truck and get it home and at the time i was honestly thinking it was totalled. I was near correct when i found out a transmission case is $200 used (if they have one) and $800 new from the factory. Seeing as how i spent $300 for this bike i honesty cannot justify spending that much on new parts. I looked at where the hole is and it is right where the clutch input shaft comes in. I suppose i could JB weld it to at least seal it so its not leaking oil but i dont think i could do that without it getting in the way of the clutch …

I finally got a day off this past Sunday spent it with my boy worked on the brat, cleaned and polished my 68 shovel then went for a ride. Stopped at the Rocket-ship park and then some ice cream:grin: It was windy and too hot, but a good day off.

A friend of mine has a 98 A4 6 cylinder Audi. Each header has a 3 inch portion of flex pipe that is leaking. The car isn't worth the insane amounts of money for replacing the exhaust. Not sure if it's been worked on before but the exhaust from the engine looks like an enormously long piece? I told him to take it to a shop since I'm not set up or good with my welder. And they should be able to weld something in - they quoted him $1,600!??! He doesn't want to put that into this car. Is it possible to weld in a section of flex pipe or does that only come on existing exhausts? I've never seen any for sale but never looked either.

Well i recently got a landscaping job and the deal is i have to work 60 hours to get a 1988 mazda truck. yes not my first choice in vehicles but then again nobody else these days will pay me a truck to do work for them so of course i took it. the people who had it last put on a weber carb but didnt exactly do it right because it seems to bog down and die a lot. I saw it run perfect before he tried putting on the weber so im assuming it probly has a vacum leak somewhere on it. Once its 100% mine and i get it running right im not sure what ill do with it but id certainly consider trading it for a subaru

Shop said his 2003 Xterra (V6) automatic needs: Steering gear box is leaking. Replacement was like $2,500 or $3,000 or something crazy - $1,800 just for the part. Timing belt replaced. Anyone have any experience or information on this? I'd like to help him do the timing belt if i can this summer.

im have a 1985 jeep cherokee with a 2.5 liter 4 banger and it was just running last week but then died out and wouldnt start. i assumed it was just out of gas as what usually happens when you romp in a jeep all day long LOL. yesterday though i try adding gas to start it up and it would just turn over and not show any signs of wanting to go. i checked and it was getting fuel and i know it haqs good compression and air flow so that leaves spark/timing as the two culprits. i took off the spark plug and coil and turned it over. I saw it wasnt getting any spark what so ever. The spark plug is good and the coil didnt seem corroded so i guess that would likely mean the distribut…

No where else to put this so here it is. A 1993 vehicle, had a JVC cassette deck in it with 45w speakers. I put a new Clarion in, about 140w. Speakers work and all but I cant put the volume up more than about 5-10% without the speakers distorting. Would it be because I am over driving the speakers? It sounds like they are blown, but the are not.

  22. A coworker is looking to buy a 92 Camaro for her son. Tomorrow, she would like me to look over from a mechanical viewpoint. I know nothing more about it at this moment. Any tips? Good/bad engines/trannies? Other common issues/failure-points? Craidslist posting says "V6 engine, automatic"... lots of useful info, right?

2006 expedition, 5.4L 3V, 4x4, 65,000 miles. Problem getting engine to run well over 3/4 throttle, 3000 rpm and above. Not very noticeable in normal driving, however, towing a 7000# (8600# Max towable weight rating) TT to the coast proved difficult at best in the hills. Scenario: climbing 8% grade, in 2nd gear, 3500 rpm @ roughly 50 MPH, there is nothing left. Engine misses, looses power if pushed. Fuel filter replaced with OEM 10K ago, oil changes every 5-6K (factory recommended 5K intervals with 5W-20 synthetic oil) at local dealer, nothing else ever noted by dealer. Anything else that should be checked? Known problem for others? Again, this is a repeatable,…

Mazda You can call me a disloyal, but the car is in way better condition to any late-nineties Legacy I was looking for. It's a '98 626 2.0 AT, the body and the interior are in mint condition. The only thing that concerns me is the AT, I have no information about any ATF change and it's 200,000 km car.

  25. Started by soobenthusiast,

I recently swapped the motor and tranny out of my 92 Mazda 626 into my 89 Ford Probe. I now have the probe put together and driving with just a few little things left. One odd thing is that when I pump my brakes, each time I pump it the pedal goes farther down. Usually, if anything, the brakes have air in them and are the opposite, with the pedal coming up farther each time. Anyone have an idea why it does this? And the other thing is that if I have the idle speed control solenoid plugged in, the solenoid just goes wide open and the car tries to run around 3-4k. Then the computer realizes something is not right and uses fuel cuts to bring it back down, it will …
