  1. GD, I've often wondered about the oil burning on emissions. We used to own a '83 Mazda which burned oil to the tune of a quart every 500 miles (you could see it in the exhaust). It passed emissions!! I was told by the emissions guy that the test sees gasoline produced HCs but not oil produced HCs. I really don't know how, but I thought I'd pass this on.
  2. The higher standard might be due to the age of the car. Older cars get higher standards. Also, after 20 years (I believe) emissions testing is no longer required. Only two more years to wait for my Brat.
  3. Matt, sometime you need to show me how you enter photos and such into your posts.
  4. A request from ORG, volunteers needed. 5. Matt, I have two flywheels in the garage currently--an EA81 and an EA82. The timing marks are only 4 degrees different between the two. If you insist, I can look at them and see whether that's advanced or retarded. That should get your timing close enough to run and then you can adjust it "by ear" to eliminate pinging.
  6. By the way you should post the results of the emissions testing along with the year and model of your car/engine. That way others can guage whether a weber will work for them.
  7. So did you tell him about the emissions guru? By the way, is Warren back yet? Glad to hear you passed. Got to love them Weber carbs.
  8. I found that I had to find an '88 clutch cable to go with my '88 5 speed D/R; the original 4 speed cable wouldn't adjust the clutch properly. Jerry, I have the EA82 flywheel and clutch assembly; seems to work just fine. I didn't notice if you put the lock washers under the starter motor.
  9. A tip: set the timing and idle at 700 to 800 rpm with the vac. advance dis-engaged and the hose plugged. When you're done with that set the idle to 800 to 1000 rpm; even though you didn't fail at idle, the higher the idle the more likely you are to pass at idle. Nextly, does your vacuum advance work? If not, it should be fixed; I don't know if that affects CO or not, but it should be working. Fix the thermo switch on the fan. An the cat should be hot as possible although I think that only affects HCs. No air filter would help if your air filter is dirty. What does the slip the emissions place gave you say about what to look at for CO failures?
  10. Something to consider: Rust never sleeps.
  11. I believe the difference is the type of automatic choke--AV is the water choke, EV is the electric choke. Check out the Haynes manual of weber carbs if you can find one; it's pretty informative.
  12. Flo...get a hold of Jerry (bratsarus1). He's a whiz at installing "unauthorized" seats. He put a set of XT seats in my Brat and it's like they were made for it. He actually separated the seat rail halves of the XT seats and mounted the original seat rails from the old seats in the Brat (without the seat attached of course) and then tack welded the XT half rail to the old rails, removed the combination, welded the rails together properly and added some re-enforcement cross pieces. Perfect arrangement and stronger than the original.
  13. got the PM; thanks; I sent you mine.
  14. Rick, I had a similar problem with our Brat. Loosing coolent consistently and increasing in amount until we were at a gallon a week (and my wife was only driving 3 miles round trip per day!). Finally, it gave up and my wife had to nurse it home. I let it sit for a week and then checked the coolent (none) and oil--choclate milk shake. Engine is history now; qman installed a fine rebuilt engine. He still has the old engine (he's welcome to it since I really think it's toast); however, I may have to go back and dispose of it since it's not fair to him to have to deal with my junk.
  15. Soldotna....I've been there. Quite a ride from Anchorage if I remember correctly. Especially if they close those avalanche gates on the road there. You brought back some old memories.
  16. From the ORG Rally discussion board: Hey everyone! Here's a quick reminder about the RallyCross on Sunday, June 27th. We hope you can join us on Sunday, June 27th at the Washington County Fairplex for Round 2 of the 2004 Oregon RallyCross Championship!
  17. A junkyard cable should be a good interim fix, but I suspect this is one time that it's better to buy a new one at the dealership.
  18. So did anyone pull that LSD this weekend?
  19. Thanks, PM on the way.
  20. I'm looking to run a CarFax if anyone has time left. Thanks.
  21. Now that I've had a chance to look at the results, there's more info on USMB/Hatch Patrol competition. Open Class: mudrat was first, Flowmastered87GL 5th, Zap was 6th, John Alley 14th out of 21 entries. Production Class: superallyvovo was 4th (in Jason's car), GLcraigGT 7th, Jason (bajasubevwnut) 10th out of 12 entries. Production GT: XSYNRG was 15th out of 20 entries as a result of some incorrect official's advice which unfortunately took him out of a top three finish. I hate it when results are dictated out of the rulebook instead of on the course. Truck/SUV: My son, Eric 1st, Sean of Rallitek 2nd, qman 3rd, 84soob 4th, a friend of Eric's on his first rallycross 5th, yours truly 8th, out of 12 entries. Brats and Bajas in the top 5 places!! Time Only: Yours truly 5th, 84soob 7th, qman 10th, Zap 13th. 84soob and I had the advantage of running in the same group as Production GT which had a fast, dry course for all three runs. qman and zap ran with Open which had one wet first run. There were 15 cars in this group. Full blown rally prepped cars (and drivers) took the first four places in this group. Sorry if I butchered your Boardname.:-\
  22. Dave, I haven't done this on a Forester, but I would think it's similar to the earlier cars. Once you have the pin out of the tranny stub axle and the strut loosened from the rest of the front suspension, put the axle nut back on loosely (hand tight only) and then pull out on the hub until the axle separates from the tranny. After removing the axle nut again, the axle should just slide out of the splines on the Forester (hopefully, it's similar to the Legacy that I have done).
  23. Judging from the early Legacies that show up at PAP yards, I would guess the early automatic transmissions are a problem also.
  24. USMB folks are consistently honest. People tend to meet your expectations. If you don't trust, some will confirm your worst expectations. If you trust, most will be trustworthy; simple as that.
