Take it out on the highway. The faster you go the warmer the engine gets. Cools right down as you slow down. Classic symptoms for a faulty radiator. With that mileage I'd replace the radiator first. Easy to do yourself and only about $100 for the radiator. After that you can look for other more expensive reasons, but I'd bet you'll have resolved the problem.

I don't know about the GT, but I'm pretty sure it is 3.2 L to L. Only Subarus with a quicker steering rate that I'm sure of is the 2004/5 WRX which is 2.6 L to L. (There might be better ratios on the newer WRX and STi models but I haven't even looked at them). Only reason I know this is my son's expertise along these lines; I bought a used steering rack with less miles than my car has from a 2005 and we're swapping it out into my '02 Impreza OBS wagon. There is a modification that you can do to your existing rack to get down to 2.0 L to L. Pretty pricey mod ($600+ installed) but worth every penny on my '97 Impreza DD and rallyX car. Only downside is the steering isn't as light since the power steering pump has to do more work in less time. I could solve that with a different pulley on the P/S pump but it's not really necessary.

If these are the small filter size that Subaru went to, I'm unaffected since I only buy the larger aftermarket version. Also I've never had any problems with the Fram filters (over 15 years with more than 10 cars in the family). I attribute that to changing them at 3000 miles when I do my oil changes, not the 7500 miles as suggested in the owner's manual.

Piston won't screw back into brake caliper.
edrach replied to Abski's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've found that opening the bleeder fitting slightly will relieve the internal pressure a bit and makes it easier to screw the piston back in. Use a tin can to catch the brake fluid that spits out. -

It might be time to check the voltage coming out of your alternator. If the voltage regulator does cut off the voltage at 14.5VDC max, you stand the chance of burning out the bulbs pre-maturely. Any voltage above 15VDC is definitely a sign of a bad regulator. Test the voltage at idle and see how high it goes when you rev it to 5K. Easy test if you have a digital voltmeter.

an SVX all the way to a hit-and-run
edrach replied to autopulse's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Welcome to the Board. Sorry about the loss of the Impreza. As you discovered, good used Imprezas are hard to find. Did the police ever catch the drunk driver? Hopefully you can recover the loss from him or his insurance, if he has any. Oddly, I've had good success finding Imprezas on http://www.autotrader.com. Worst comes to worst, take a trip out west and look for a rust free Impreza and then drive it home for your parents. Difficult to do, but possible. Good luck. -
Tire Switchout
edrach replied to JohnW2's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Subaru rims are usually 48 to 55mm offset. Most aftermarket wheels are around 35mm offset. They'll work but your wheel bearings might suffer since the loading is designed around the Subaru offset. Almost all the 16" Subaru alloys will fit, but you might have an issue with the RS 6 spoke rims; they are 7" width and with a 225 width tire there's a good chance they'll rub on the rear strut perch. I solved that problem by installing a 5mm spacer on the rear wheels. -
You might try http://www.autoadventure.net/ located in Portland. They have lots of wheel rims available for the Impreza. Doesn't need to be for the '08; most years of Impreza rims will fit your car. You don't need to go with 17" rims, WRX rims (16x6-1/2) are readily available on nasioc all the time, often complete with tires. Besides those chrome rims are UGLY!

Tire Switchout
edrach replied to JohnW2's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Having had issues using RS 7" rims on our '97 Impreza, I found the clearance in the rear is more critical than in the front when going to oversize rims/tires. -
Bigger wheels for a 2nd gen brat
edrach replied to scooter0000's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There is a pug alloy wheel in the 14" size also. Check out the for sale forum; I thought I saw a set of pugs there recently. -

edrach replied to scooter0000's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you find the 15" Pug wheels, beware of the 390 type (on the tire sidewall) and I believe embossed on the inside of the rim. 390's are metric 15's and are actually 15-1/4" or so in diameter; normal 15" won't fit on the rims and the 390 tires are very expensive (only made by Michelin and I have no idea how much they cost). -
Re-sizing the pics; Open the pic using Windows Paint. Click on image and then stretch/skew. Then reduce the horizontal and vertical sizes by the same percentage. Then re-save the reduced image by saving as with a new name. A little tedious, but it works for me. I used to live in Wilmington (up in Chalfonte) just off 202 near the border. Welcome to the Board.

Mostly true (actually true since I'm talking about RS rims)experience with my '97 Impreza. I had bought a beautiful set of RS 6 spoke rims and mounted them with 205/55R16 Conti DWS tires and then found the tires would not clear the struts on the rear. Turns out the tires rubbed on the struts. Odd since I didn't have any trouble with the WRX rims I used with Hankook winter tires of the same size. Turns out the RS rims are 7" width as opposed to the WRX 6-1/2" rims. I got around this issue by installing a 5mm spacer on the rear hubs. Not a lot of clearance but enough to be able to use my rims. Most of the rims you are talking about are either 6" or 6-1/2" width so you should be okay.

Interesting lesson learned about our '84 Brat
edrach replied to edrach's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It could happen. Wiring for the '84 GL and Brat are pretty similar according to the shop manual. -
Our '84 Brat is driven very occasionally. It's our backup car if one of our other cars is in the shop for repair. Over the months the directional signals started to fail and finally no directional signals and no hazard warning lights. Rains stopped long enough for me to look into it. Checked the turn signal fuse and it was okay. Took front and rear signal housings apart and other than some corrosion in the sockets I didn't find any bad bulbs (other than one backup bulb which had nothing to do with the problem). Time to grab the shop manual and look to see where I should look. Found the Brat has a combination hazard/signal module. I couldn't find it under the dash where it was supposed to be. I took a 2nd look at wiring diagram and noticed that the fuse feeding the hazard/signal module also fed the horn. Went to the car and found the horn didn't work either (who uses the horn anyway?). Checked the horn fuse.....OPEN. A little time spent with the manual and analyzing the problem and symptoms would have turned a 2 hour fix into a 5 minute fix.
