  1. mine does the exact same thing. i drive for a couple minutes and it's fine. or i can kick the choke off. oh, by the way, 88 gl hatch, ea81.
  2. for newer subarus, chilton > haynes for older subarus, chilton < haynes also keep in mind the out of print book how to keep your subaru alive...find it on ebay, good luck winning it though.
  3. good work. was it tough installing the clutch pedal + cable?
  4. the hatch on my hatch only has three working lines...maybe this is something to look in to.
  5. fuel filter's still in the engine compartment for carb'd ea81?
  6. and yet your 88 has a different front bumper than mine. strange.
  7. i have an 88 hatch, cant find new/reman axles for it. i got some from an 84 wagon but they wont do for long.
  8. nice looking stereo. when i got a new HU, i had to make a spacer out of wood in order for the rca wires to fit back there without any grief. i also have a couple subs (unnessecary) and two 6x9's in a box on the back seat. i've built smaller boxes for them but not quite sure how to fit them in the car as it is a hatchback and space is limited.
  9. the lightbulb in my heater cluster burnt out, good thing i know from memory where the hot/cold is. i cant be arsed to pull all the dash parts out to change a little bulb.
  10. thanks, i turned the axle 180 degrees and voila - pin in like nobody's business. the cotterpin idea occured to me, but i figured that i might as well use the rollpin if at all possible. now the next challenge is to get the swaybar clamp back on properly. getting it apart was easy.
  11. the boots on the DOJ for both front axles on my 88 gl hatch were totally gone, so i got some reman axles from the dealer in town. getting the old one out was easy, getting the new one in was a different story all together. loosened the strut tower nuts - no dice. unclamped the sway bar - no dice. control arm let down - small amount of dice. turned wheel to the side i was working on and it worked. i made a spacer from a pipe and got to threading the axle thru the wheel bearings. i even had to take off the hub. got everything connected nicely and when to drive in the pin to hold the axle in place. it wouldn't budge. of course i had to do everything the hardest way possible. now i have a fully functional front end minus a pin on one of the axles. my question is, will it fall off when im driving? i know it's better off being put in properly, but i need to drive to work in the morning and will fix it after. i know there's 1000 threads about this as axle changes on subarus are quite frequent, but i had to vent i suppose. i am definately not cut out to be a mechanic. i can try though.
  12. is the touring wagon the wagon with the really really big rear glass? i saw one in town today.
  13. happened to me - i left the side windows on my hatch open. wrecked the new speakers i put in there, so i got bigger ones and built boxes for them. now they hang from the roof all nice like.
  14. best of luck. if i had the money/time/mechanical inclination for such a project i would do the same thing to my hatchback.
  15. that's a cool looking sube. i like that particular body style of the earlier 80's models, especially the front end headlights/parking lights. i wonder how many of those subaru made.
  16. i had a tire that the cords or belts inside the tire had separated, leaving me with a massive bulge on one part of the treads. the sound it made was a wham wham wham type sound not unlike the one you're describing. check the problem wheel and tire for bulges. if it's not that it's probably the axle.
  17. subaru's stock auto SUCKS. slow as hell. first gear is a joke. i like the older gl sedans. i need a 5 speed tranny from an ea81, if i can find a donor 4wd hatch, horray for me. i seriously doubt it though, junker around here only has loyales, and i doubt if any of the stuff will fit. im not about to fabricate any parts either.
  18. i also had two kumho winter tires for my old car....worked beautifully but i forget specifically which ones. sold them for 100 bucks with rims that i got for free.
  19. i got a full set of all weather tires for my gl hatch at canadian tire...about 220 dollars later. treads lookin fine after almost a year of driving. i know they are crap tires, but at the time my financial situation was not what it is now.
  20. i had aquired an 87 grand am, it started after being idle for four years when i put in a new battery. it ran like crap though for the longest time, then it got rear ended so i donated it to the local wrecker.
  21. ok, he could come to canada and waste MY tax dollars. i've found road signs at the dump before, i don't really think theft is nessecary.
