didn't overtighten, checked for leaking on and around the valve covers....none, still clean from when i carb cleanered them up. i did the spark plugs a month ago and they all looked clean, cleaner than any other vehicle's plugs that i've ever seen actually. i think its either: a)bad rings b)bad pcv valve i'll have a look-see at the tranny tomorrow. there's a few vacuum hoses that go from the transmission to the engine, don't really know what they're for. either way, the trans is crap (leaking from somewhere, slips, won't shift until really warm etc) so i'm swapping that out for a 4spd d/r and do the 2wd to 4wd conversion. i hope i don't have to tear the engine apart just yet, but if it has to be done, then it has to be done. there's no way i'm driving a smokey car, sube or no sube. thanks for the replies.

hello everyone, i have a quick question. also, i've exhausted the search function. yesterday i changed a valve cover gasket. routine procedure, right? nothing went amiss, nothing seemed broken. later that day, the motor started burning oil. lots of it. only when i stab the acellerator or take off from a standstill/idling while hot. could it be that when i changed the valve cover i could have messed something up on the valves/rocker/springs etc? or is it just a strange coincidence that i fried a ring on the same day that i had the valve cover off? could the oil be coming in thru the intake or the intake valve, maybe a bad valve guide seal or something? pcv system works and the valve is relatively new. also no misrouted hoses and the like. i think a rebuild is in my future. the car is a 1988 subaru GL hatch, 2wd AT. ea81 motor. 180 000 kms.

Front Brake Question!!!
wesley willis replied to ejmartin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yep, clockwise, and sometimes it seems like you're turning forever and getting nowhere...this is normal. one of my front caliper pistons takes a rediculous amount of turning to get back into its bore. -
Front Brake Question!!!
wesley willis replied to ejmartin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i tried the C clamp thing unknowingly as well. i'm still alive, so i'm assuming that i didn't damage my brakes. -

wesley willis replied to manaman's topic in Subaru Retrofitting

best model years for Subaru
wesley willis replied to sheps58's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
that's about how much i'd pay with a newer vehicle. right now i have basically NO coverage unless the damage is caused by someone else. $1050 a year, payments monthly. -

wesley willis replied to switt's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
some reman axles click no matter what. i blew one and changed two more before that....all were replaced with remans, all clicked. as long as its not going CLUNK CLUNK or shaking the hell out of the car, i've nothing to worry about. -

Adding DOT3 Brake Fluid to Loyale
wesley willis replied to NewDriverOlderRide's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
if your pedal got stiffer after a few pumps with the engine OFF, it's more likely that your brake booster is working normally than air in the brake lines/master cylinder. your brakes are probably fine, unless the brake fluid level was really really low (empty resevoir), in which case i would try bleeding them. -

ea-81 subaru sucks, take a look!
wesley willis replied to ravenes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
turn your key to the 'on' position (dont start the car). if you look up underneath the dash but above the steering column there should be a little black box with a red blinking LED. that is your computer. oh, and afaik they don't retime themselves either. -

Lifted hatch population grows in Colorado!
wesley willis replied to eyesore's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hope to see pics. my hatch is going to undergo growth surgery soon as well. ea82 coilovers + extension in the rear and blocks in the front. of course, gotta put in the 5spd dr and rear end first. anyone live in bc or seattle and have a driveshaft for a hatch? lifted hatch's are like quads with heaters and sometimes radios. -
mine beeps all by itself from time to time. just another quirk i suppose.
