Hill-holder troubles.
Miles, you are wrong somewhat. Hill-Holder: as how to keep your subaru alive words it: "Some Subarus have a unique gadget called a hill-holder that allows you to stop on a hill and take your foot off the brake without rolling backwards. How does this miracle work, you ask? There's a unit called a pressure hold valve (PHV) in the engine compartment right below the master cylinder. Inside the PHV is a cylinder and in the cylinder is a ball that is free to roll from one end to the other. When you stop on a hill with the clutch and brake pedals depressed, the ball rolls to the rear of the cylinder and seals a hole that prevents the release of hydraulic pressure in the primary brake system when you release the brake pedal. This locks the left front and right rear brakes and prevents the car from rolling backwards" i can add more, but it does affect front left and right rear...

Odd electrical sound
bheinen74 replied to MaddCelt's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXidle air control valve. the mechanism inside has moving plastic parts that over time wear a groove into and they can stick, malfunction, act up sporadically. If the groove is bad, temp can play a role into it sticking more, plastic does expand some as it heats up. If its is bad or acting up, best to replace with low mileage or new unit.

Site Upgrade and update-Please read.
Well, I doubt Facebook and Twitter (and the other 10 new ones coming out) will be around in 3 years (think myspace, AOL chat, ICQ, etc). So if it was me, I wouldn't dedicate a penny (cent) for any cost for those defunct virus inflicted, and advertisement bombarded sites to work with the USMB. Leave them out. They are full of viruses, and are only in existence to gather personal info. Raffle idea is good. Something I never thought of til it was listed. Good idea maybe.

Is this worth it? 2002 Outback
bheinen74 replied to gdcpony's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXnot bad. I cannot give my 03 baja (with no accident record no paint work ever, no rust, perfect carfax) can't give it away right now. serious. has no value at all and i will figure 8 race it this spring then crush it. i am the 2nd owner, all highwya miles, no paint ever done on the car. cant't pay someone to buy it. I get 30 mpg avg, and have the gas receipts to proce it. nobody wants a high mileage car, wheter its a subaru, honda, ypts, etc. I might trade it for a dodge neon, and sell the neon which apparantly people want.....roll eyes and not sure where to take this thread from here. of you like it, go for it, but the accident report s a biggie. go for one without any damage prior to you taking possession if -you fear the accident

looking to buy 02 OBW - salt question
bheinen74 replied to teppichkopf's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXA job in the book at "2hours" is going to be double or more on a salt belt car, and you will need replacement nuts, bolts parts just to get it done. I still give good advice. seized rear wiper motor rusted out fuel filler necks brakes that have frozen slider pins etc

looking to buy 02 OBW - salt question
bheinen74 replied to teppichkopf's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXMy advice, you are in Seattle, buy one from CA to WA area. Its not just body rust on the quarters, fenders, rockers, its ALL areas underneath that rust. Shock bolts, axle stub ends, exhaust, tailgate hinge release handles, everything you need to repair on the car, down to brake slides, calipers, will break when you take to a shop. The shops out there do not know how to deal with that type of rust in normal repair estimates. You will be really mad in the long haul. Stay away from east coast rust belt car, same for one from midwest.

Ethanol Free Gas!
I wanted to add, its possible new cars will not have mpg affects with using either types of fuels. ECU's can learn and adjust injection rates etc based on how sensors detect things. The older the car (no ECU's, or lesser ability on older ECU's to adjust) the more mpg could be affected. For new car owners, they probably like the cheaper cost and do not see a drop in power, mpg rates. Its people like the ones on this board who rely on cheap old reliable Subarus and we do sometimes notice worse fuel mileage with ethanol enriched formulas.

timing and belt
bheinen74 replied to General chaos's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXa 93 ej22 no way you could have bent the valves.. thats a good thing Do not use the piston marks on anything. Ignore them forever really. Only go by alignment marks on the picture. The crankshaft sprocket has a notch at the BACK. Use the back mark and align it to the notch on the block. This diagram provided is not very good. I will search for better. the mark is at the back.

98 S leg OB 2.5 replaced timing belt, gskts---HELP!
bheinen74 replied to amyksh's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXNGK does a really decent quality control on the pre-gapping. I always check them, most all times dead on what they are supposed to be. I had an occasional one or 2 plugs off a slight bit, but nothing too far out.

Rear suspension rotted out
i would suggest pull the interior inner trim panel inside the back that covers wheel wells on inside. plastic should snap out of the clips maybe a few screws. then you can see the conditions.

Hot to remove ABS sensors?
bheinen74 replied to stickedy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXeasy to remove if you aren't trying to save it, but lets assume you will be trying to reuse it. soak with penetrants, wiggle with some vice grips, not too much twisting at a time, just enough to make it budge slightly. resoak. wiggle, resoak, wiggle resoak. i have success on a few, and a few the metal just twisted apart on the housing to the sensor. if that happens, just beat them out. i have also vice gripped it, then tapped on the vice grip.

Click under dash then engine dies - SOLVED
bheinen74 replied to danbennett2u's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXis your AC compressor froze up? The click could be from defroster circuit cycling on and off, if the AC compressor is seized, it could be shutting off your car. Where is your climate controls set at? ecu at pick n pull is not near 100 bones. more ;like 35-45 they rarely if ever fail. clicking usually involves some relay. My guess is AC. 328k is enuf miles a compressor might fail.
