  1. Okay, thats 2 rear axle breakages, in my driveway on bald 30s Strike one: star pulls out of cup even though Its impossible to actually hyperextend, I've tested my suspension. It seems dual doj axles dont work very well after all. Not the fault of subaru, design flaw on my part. It seems one end will pull out of the cup under load before the other one starts sliding. I was idling rwd up a clay mound in double low. So I fix that one. Edit: I tack weld in the outer clip that hold the star into the cup. No problem there after that. Strike 2: climbing a rock in rwd with the tires aired down, basically idling as well, I shear the axle shaft clean off where it enters the outside doj. So far no expected breakage like cup explosions or stub twist-offs. Strike 3 means I go looking for a solid axle. I mean c'mon, I havent left my driveway And I still havent put my knobby 31s on the back. This is pathetic.
  2. you can get 14 and 15" toyota/nissan/mazda rims with teh 6 lug pattern. 2 of the holes line up, then you can drill and taper 2 new holes. even weld up the 4 useless holes after to make it look good. Or do the six lug conversion which isnt much harder.
  3. just remember that you'd be angling your axle shafts forward putting mroe angle on your cvs. You might be able to get an inch or so on an ea81 car. The design of the ea82 wont allow this, the axles will run into the crossmember.
  4. for the quad cab thing, I would cut up the rear hatch and graft it in behind the seats, and then make the back a truck box with a tailgate net.
  5. I dont think I need anything. You should come over with your sube. My rig only has rwd with temporary (ie half exhaust pipe) driveshafts. But bring an extra diff if you've got one, we can weld it up and you'll really go places . I bought the car for a grand, got really nice tires for only 150, free rims, tcase was 40 bucks, I would say Ill be in for about 15-1600 canadian. If I wasnt such a cheap bastad it probably would be in the 2g range. I have basically 2 crawls, 28:1 and 50:1.
  6. Yep in my gallery. Im not sure how much they'll help. Bear with the lack of proper tires, lugs, and the temporary exhaust Its still a work in progress. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=129
  7. Well theres a lip in the front that could be shaved off for a few inches, and in the back of a wagon you could cut diagonally under the hatch and weld new metal in. This would give you a few inches. Also, the area underneath the headlights can be cut out to give room for your tires to get up stumps and rocks. Bobbing a wagon would be tough if you want to keep rear quarter glass. You could just plate that in with sheetmetal though after you move the back end forward. Or make the wagon into a baja by cutting the roof off behind the doors, and bobbing the rear end. ...hey I see 5bolt wheels on that toy. Whats going on there?
  8. I extended my front wheels 1" forward, by moving the crossmember 3" forward and making control arms angled 2" back, mainly for fitting the front diff in better. I couldnt go any further without hacking up the strut towers. I just made offset lift blocks on top of the towers that pushed the strut forward as much as possible. With 31s on 3.5" backspace rims on 6" lift, I havent had to touch the firewall, just trim the fenders. On a wagon with a standard lift (where the side outputs of the tranny are still used) I would say the only way you could do it would be to move the motor, crossmember, everything forward. The crossmember cant move forward itself because it will hit the oilpan, and remember the axles are still tied to the tranny, so youd be running funny angles on them.
  9. I just worked up a sweat putting one of my 31s on a rim using a tire iron And theres more like 1.25" with these 31s. The other 31 I tried was the same spec but actually was wider.
  10. 215/75/15 and 205/75/15 are around the 27-28" mark. I ran them with no lift on my t-wagon, then made a lift later. In the front I had to pound in the seam and firewall and cut alot out of my fender. The rust took care of fender clearance in the back. I took off my fenders and stuck 30s on the front of my wagon unlifted. I had very little turning radius before the front edge of the tire was rubbing on the engine compartment wall. For gearing reasons I would stick with something 27-28" in size.
  11. clearance is fine, theres maybe 3/4" between the bottom spring cup and the treadblock.
  12. the tires will be 31x10.5s. the tires on the back now are 30x9.5s. When I welded up my rear quarters, I modified the lip to follow the shape of the tire with the suspension fully stuffed (with the coilover pulled out). In the front my wheelbase ended up being extended 1" but with a 6" lift I think it would work without the extension. The rims are about 3.5" backspace, and 6" wide which is right on the limit for the size tires I have. Ive been on the lookout for some 7" wide rims. Building the front suspension with the diff in it has proven to be a serious pain, because of the way the ea82 suspension arms angle forwards slightly instead of backwards. I had to make arms that angled back, but to do that I had to move the crossmember forward. So I made my crossmember 3" forward, and my arms angle 2" back.
  13. yep temporary. I noticed when I put them on I went from being able to cruise up my driveway in low with no gas, to having to feather it. Now of course I can put the e-brake on in rwd and the back tires will slowly burn out while the vehicle is stopped. And I can get out and watch
  14. " Sometimes an intelligent man is forced to get drunk just to spend time with his friends" Cool sig. Its so true.
  15. a few of my buddies and I have a some cars and plan to set up something similiar on my buddy's field, when his parents go to visit france. They were going in september, but now are going in april, so hopefully its still on. Pics and stories will definitely follow.
  16. Its rolling!!! Sure, it only has 2 lugnuts holding the wheels on, mismatched wheels,no brakes, and no exhaust, but it moves!! So far from my driveway pounding, my custom a-arm front suspension works well, and my double doj axles havent blown up. But I got it stuck in the ditch cause it only has rwd right now, and nobodies around to help me get it out. And the friggen power company broke my phone line while they were putting new insulators on a nearby power pole Okay, 3 more pics in my gallery, don't laugh... The pipes sticking forwards are my dual exhaust flipped around temporarily because they dont fit the right way anymore. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=129
  17. unless you have a ft4wd with the diff unlocked, and you push in the clutch when you hit the ebrake. If you dont use the clutch it will try to make the front wheels spin 2x as fast, but it wont happen and you'll just slow down.
  18. the subaru is one of the only 4x4s I can think of with a hand ebrake, the samurai being the other one. Besides, when you are in locked 4wd, the front ebrake works on all 4 through the drivetrain.
  19. i payed 75 cdn for a drum/open diff setup. If it's worth 150 to you get it. But if the guy isnt paying attention to the disk/lsd goodies, he should be charging a bit less IMO. to pull it out all you should need is your typical 10, 12, 14, 17, 19mm sockets and wrenches. You'll want to bring a breaker bar as well. And a hacksaw in case the exhaust is still there. Just unbolt the diff from the mustache bar, undo the subframe bolts near the front of the suspension, unbolt the driveshaft, coilovers, fuel pump brackets and cut or undo the brake lines. Then pull the whole setup out.
  20. I saw something very similiar. It was a beige ea81 front cab, with everything behind the front doors cut down to a flatdeck. In the back there was a crane/hoist type thing bolted in.
  21. for 800 you should be able to find a better car for your purposes. Swapping a manual and 4wd is not a huge deal, but you might be stacking $300 on to that price plus more work. I think you could find a better car. Around my area we have a local buy/sell/trade paper, there should be something like that where you live. Thats how I found my car. Theres also the marketplace on the board, ebay. Thats all I can think of now.
  22. Its a very weak low range, only 1.2:1 or something, but it is a low range.
