on the trail, park it on something so that one back wheel is in the air, then get under there, knock the roll pins out with a hammer and 3/16" punch, and yank it out. If it's never come off before, you might have to work at it to break the rust (probably should make sure it can come off when your at home with lots of hammers) and get it off for the first time. Make sure you put some grease or anti-seize on the splines so that it will always be easy to slide on and off.

Yes you need the angles at the top and bottom of the block. This way you are mounting the strut at the same angle and straight under the original location, so that camber is unaffected. I was suggesting to add a few more degrees so that camber ends up a bit better than stock. Oh, and on the power steering pump, the best way I can think of is to drop the trans crossmember a little more to tilt the motor back.

Normal behaviour with shot shocks... Um, probably -
Well, when you drive on the pavement with a welded diff, situations were the vehicle is turning and under acceleration, but the wheels have more or less equal weight on them, are the worst situations. For example turning sharp and accelerating hard on hot sticky parking lot pavement is pretty much the worst thing you can do. But hitting a hard corner so that the vehicle leans and takes weight off the inside tire is not as bad. A welded or locked diff is the single biggest improvement to off-road performance for a subaru. I think the difference is bigger than going from 21" road tires to 28" mud terrains. Mostly because subarus have no flex, so the wheels are off the ground all the time, making open diffs useless. Airing down is another huge improvement.

put a bar across the fenders over the strut tops and use some geometry to find the angle of the strut towers. Add a few more degrees to that angle when you build your strut tops, just to give you 0 or a slight negative camber rather than the positive stock camber. Tack it and make sure it fits in the strut tower without hitting the inside though. Of course you can always do a little pounding to the strut tower if needed.

Sounds good to me. I'm sure a lift and 28's will get you were you need to go. An lsd rear diff would make a huge difference as well if you can get a hold of one. or if you don't mind getting under your car to remove an axle when going to and from the trail, you could weld the rear diff up.

Do you have a dual range 5spd? With 28" tires power was acceptable, still safe on my turbowagon. I actually think that with the auto tranny, 3.7:1 gears, and the lack of low end torque from the turbo motor would make it worse than an spfi wagon with a 5spd.

Uh thats the australian supplier. Patrick is in the U.S. and is who you must order from if you're in the U.S. That would also mean they are cheaper, that price is in AUS $ which is slightly weaker than canadian money

The DL died, thinking of a Justy
bushbasher replied to DeathBy240's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
it's a novel idea, but it uses a magnetic fluid coupling and the fluid becomes demagnitized or something like that. It's funny, because I was watching a t.v. show on ford's new magnetic fluid technology. Ford was trying to push that this was new technology that they were working with for future vehicles. But it's been in use in the justy for 15 years The big three have realized that to survive they need to have new technology. So instead of actually coming up with new ideas they rip off old ones and claim that they are new, and bombard you with bulls#$% information in their ad campaigns EG. the ad that's like, "the new ford so and so has 6 high strength carriage bolts to hold the bed on securely during the toughest hauls." or "engineers decided to place the shocks on the outside of the frame for increased stability and handling" These are supposed to wow the potential buyer! Okay enough anti-ford ranting. -

If my subaru is still up and running and able to make the trip next summer I will. Unfortunately I didn't have the means to make it this year Sounds like a lot of fun, even though I wasn't there I'd still like to thank you guys cause I'll hopefully get more pics to look through and ease my boredom! -

you can get a 5spd 4wd tranny for the justy, It's probably not much harder to swap into an ecvt car then putting a manual in an automatic dl/gl. -
I'm guessing they're going to be heavy rims though.

ECVT's . always die, and usually under 100k miles. They really are a horrible pain to deal with. Getting the dealer to put a new one in would cost you more than the car is worth, if they can even get an ecvt tranny still. If the warning light is coming on already, I'd stay away from the car as if it had a rod knock. I really think you need to keep looking unless you can talk the owner down to next to free and junk it when it dies. -

Well I've never had any experience with them going wrong other than the ecvt's, what is the weak point on these things? just wear? From what I hear their built pretty stout inside. What I could see is people just not caring about these things cause their so cheap, and dismissing oil changes and what not. It even happens to the larger subarus to some extent. -
whats wrong (or right) about this?

I agree that you should stay away from it because of the evcs tranny. As for the motors not making it past 100k, I'd have to say thats a load of crap. I know of 2 justy 5spds with over 250 000km and no motor work yet. One of them has been heavily beaten on logging roads as well. I don't know what it is with you GD shooting down every motor in existance except your fabled ea81 But I'm getting really tired of it. -

hehe k&n sticker but no k&n filter -
ea82 turbo heads are dual intake port heads and are the same as ea82 mpfi heads ea82 carb and spfi heads are single intake port. ea82 pistons are lower compression (7.7:1) so that you can run boost without detonation. no idea about bearings

Cool, looks like a nice lace to romp around in. Those logs look a little scary. I don't think even I (with 6" lift and 31s) would have the clearance to make it over those.
