I think it gets even trickier on an ea82 So far I have my rack clocked upwards, and I'm extending the crossmember 3" to fix the angles. Then the arms are being angled back to give a total 1" wheelbase extension and make room for the axles to the front diff (ea82 arms get in the way unlike ea81 arms)

convert wagon to a brat but with 4 doors
bushbasher replied to 78TurboBrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I bet you could cut it up then graft the rear hatch back into the cab at the rear doorline(with use of a sawzall and mig welder ) and then just use a mesh tailgate type thing. The problem is that the rear seats stick past the rear doorline a bit so the rear passengers heads might be on the glass unless you lean the seats for ward or give them headrests. -
the stub bolts are grade 10 and very hard metal, but its still possible to round them with the 8mm. My bolts cracked when I kicked the handle of my 1/4" drive ratchet, with no stripping or marring, thats about the extent of my experience.
-
an 8mm 1/4" drive 6-sided socket works too. I've used one to crack 2 of them now, no stripping problems.

19sec? My 87 fully loaded gl-10 turbowagon with 185/70/13 tires could do 0-60 in ~15 with the 4eat and it was really tired.

yeah, low center of gravity, compact layout, and high power/weight. Thats what I'd be putting in a buggy too. -
Using spare tire 15" rims

I agree, youd be better off with some 15x6 toy rims. -
Using spare tire 15" rims
bushbasher replied to LUVMYBRAT's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I think the rims should be fine, its just the normal spares that have the speed rating. My post may not have been clear but I understood. But putting wider tires on a 4" rim might make them into donuts and that wouldnt be good for the tires. And yes, 60mph/100kmh on the island, between Jordan River and Port Renfrew in a flat black '82 celica, with a sawzalled roof and white housepaint cobra stripes. This was the day the motor threw a rod as well. My friend took it off road and bent 2 rims on the rocks, so we grabbed a pile of donuts and had some fun sliding around and burning out with the reduced traction. -

I think the worst you could do off-road is bend the rims, most people say they are too weak. The tires that are on the spares arent rated for over 35mph or something, but the rim can probably handle it. It also could have something to do with the fact that the rim/tire does not come balanced? Actually I had a car on 4 donut spares over 60 for about 20min and nothing bad happened I wouldnt trust the setup for long term or highway use though. -
EA82 Wagon Rust - Fenders And Behind Rear Wheels
bushbasher replied to the_bard's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
mudflaps and fender liners trap mud and water around the seams, thats why mudflaps fall off Because the metal behind the mudflap disintegrates. I say unscrew (or just pull them off if the rust is too bad) and pull out your front fender liners, and spray out your inner fenders regularly. This is even more important if you are on salted roads. -
double slip joint rear axles. -update!!!!
bushbasher replied to bushbasher's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well the first step in the front is just to make custom struts. Only a few people have done this so far. My solution for axle travel in the front will come with the rear diff I am mounting in the front. The diff can be mounted a bit lower so that the axles are nearly horizontal at rest instead of angled like a stock subaru. This will leave more downtravel available. -

I may go the datsun route as well if the stubs break too much. I'll be running 30s and only 45:1 with the lada tcase and a stock ea82, so the stress shouldnt be as bad as say Jared's rig. Plus I'll be in ft4wd so hard launches wont put as much stress on the rear. Thats what I'm hoping anyways :-\ -

Do you think the stock double doj axles are found only in adjustable suspension ea82s? Just a thought. I find with double doj ea82 axles, the joints reach max angle before they reach max sliptravel. At max angle I can grab the axle and slide it back and forth about 3/4" This is good cause it keeps the joints deeper into the cups, instead of out at the edge were the cup is weakest. I think ea82 double dojs are the furthest we can go for travel using oem subaru parts, unless legacy stuff allows more angle. Theres no legacy stuff yet in the yards I frequent From my measurements, in an ea82 suspension setup with no suspension lift and equal up/down travel (which is pretty much what we have stock), a 12" travel shock/coilover would be possible. That would be quite an improvement over the stock 6" or around 9-10" with stock axles. If an ea81 axle is shorter, the max would probably be just slightly less. For more strength, maybe a custom axle could be made to use double front dojs in the back, as they are significantly larger than the rears. I'd want to figure out how to deal with the weak stubs before I go that far with the axles though. -

That's weird, the underbody is corrugated? Mine isn't Oh wait thats cause the gas tank is gone. That is an interesting find, the outer looks exactly like my double doj axles, but in the pic, the inside one looks as if it is shorter than the outside one? Probably not though. Thanks for the pic! -
ea81 front suspension on ea82?? MilesFox??
bushbasher replied to bushbasher's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Or I could cut out the tapered sleeve from the ea82 suspension arm, and replace the one in the ea81 suspension arm Actually what I will do is move the whole crossmember forward 2" then bolt the ea81 arms in. I might even move the crossmember forward 4" to extend my wheelbase, reducing the overhang, giving me more firewall clearance against the 31s, better steering shaft angle, and allow me to pack the front diff up a little closer to the tranny Hmmm, back to the shop to figure out how that'll work -
ea81 front suspension on ea82?? MilesFox??
bushbasher replied to bushbasher's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Okay, I think I'll need a bit more clarification. Lets say I want to use an ea82 crossmember with suspension mounts moved forward, and ea82 rack. I would use ea81 suspension arms with lengthened ea82 radius rods. Then use the existing ea82 hub/strut. So I would have to modify the crossmember, modify the ea82 radius rods, and since I am using the ea82 rack with the ea82 hub, the steering would be no problem. Will the lower balljoint from the ea82 hub fit in the ea81 suspension arm? And will my track width be the same? BTW, the swaybar left a long, long time ago -
Does the car have seperate amps on the backs of the speakers? Cause the bose ones in the infiniti went the other day and made a rising pitch noise, independant of the tape player/radio because the amps have their own power source. Turns out the capacitors dry out, so I have to solder new ones in. Dunno if it would be the same deal on your car.

It would be interesting to know if these double dojs made of the long travel ea82 types instead of the slightly shorter ea81 type dojs. I havent seen double dojs under any of the ea82s at the yards. So I'm out of luck there for now. edited -

Im not into trying to make money here, or keeping any knowledge to myself. I want to see the betterment of subarus everywhere, and I get a wealth of information for free on this board thanks to guys like you. They are on the back of my car now and fit and allow tons of flex but I'll have to test the durability of the mod before I call it a success. If they work well I'll definitely give you a write up and a few pics! -
How possible would it be to put the ea81 crossmember, suspension arms, and control arms under an ea82 body? I am building a lift so if there is some difference in alignment that would be okay, I can work that into my design. I would also need to put my power steering rack into the ea81 crossmember. This is so that I can mount my front diff forward enough to keep the axles straight, without interfering with the ea82 suspension arms that go straight out sideways instead of angled back like ea81. Another possibility is modifying the ea82 crossmember with new suspension points mounted in front of the old ones, with ea81 suspension arms. Possibility 3: use the lift to move the ea82 crossmember forward, then mount ea81 arms in the crossmember to return wheelbase to stock while clearing the axles. I've never been under an ea81 but I have seen many undercarriage pics of them and have heard of ea82 stuff on ea81s. What are your thoughts guys? Your help would be great!

well for the local upcoming redneck rallycross my friends and I are putting on, I'll probably be in a flat black '82 vw rabbit 4dr with CIS, snow tires, bad shocks, and no exhaust
