double slip joint rear axles. -update!!!!
bushbasher replied to bushbasher's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Update: I have made double slip joint axles using ea82 dojs on both sides of an ea82 axle. On the outer, I had to weld a washer to the axle inboard of the joint to act as a stop so that the axle wont push through the star. This means I will have to take the inner doj off to replace the outer boot because the washer prevents the boot from sliding on from the outer side. as for welding on the axle, we'll see how that works out Another way to do it would be to stick the outer doj star on a lathe and cut a groove inside the splines to use the snap ring that the cv originally used. Right now, I have about 3.5" of suspension lift (I designed it to be 2", but the fact that the arm is on an angle causes a component of the weight of the vehicle to go through the arm instead of the coilover. This makes the coilover not compress enough. At least thats my theory) Anyways, with 3.5" suspension lift at full droop I have an extra 1" of slip available and about another 1" of downtravel. Also, it sounds as If I was lucky. It only took a few good taps with a ball-peen to get the cvs off. -
Actually the gears can handle running over the beads, they just squash them. But the bearings dont like them. Clean it out as much as you can before you fill it up, then do an oil change after a bit of driving and clean off the magnet on the drain plug. Then you should be good to go. I've welded 2 subaru diffs so far, welding the spider gears together and also from the spiders to the case. No problems on either differential.

Advantage of lock diff
bushbasher replied to EA82Turbo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
A welded diff will cause the car to oversteer while turning in or out of a turn, where the car is still turning but has more or less equal pressure on each tire. The welded diff will cause both rear tires to lose traction and slide a bit more. This can be used to get the tail out more if thats something that would help you. It will also increase traction in a straight line and in a hard turn where the inside wheels might otherwise start spinning. I would go to a parts yard, find another diff of the same ratio, weld it up and put it in. If you don't like it put your original diff in. Its only 4 driveshaft bolts, 3 diff bolts, and 2 roll pins to pull or install a diff. -
What would be the advantage of the ecvt trannys? Why not put a 5spd in there instead?

huh. I could have sworn it was a transverse mounted i4, but a google pic proves Im wrong as well.
-
I suppose the 4wd drivetrain out of another transverse 4wd car could be transplanted, like a 4wd toyota tercel motor. You could probably get everything you need for $100 from a rustbucket donor tercel. Or you could go all the way and an awd mitsu v6.

isuzu stuff is more widespread than alot of people think. About them justys, no low range, but turbocharge it with some atv tires and your good to go for some crazy muddin', jumpin' and bajain' action.

But if you run over the sign, the check engine light demon might reincarnate into a punctured oil pan demon You wouldnt want one of them demons. -

The ambient temp display on the console of the caravan said 123degrees celcius one day, and when I hit the celcius/fahrenhuit button it said 666 freaky eh -

Those superbike carts are deathtraps! Have you seen the vids on the net? INSANE I tell you! No need for a subaru turbo on top of that! -
The Maiden Voyage: SS Subaru

they made a new beetle float on monster garage by filling it with expandable foam, you could probably do the same thing to a subaru. Then like fox says, run a prop off the d-shaft. Ive got a huge collection of oil drums, it would be cool to weld them up and strap them to a car and go cruisin across the Sooke basin, about 200ft from my house. -
What could I get for Selling My Soob?
bushbasher replied to Skipper47's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It is also a 94 which is alot newer than a gl, meaning the paint, body, and interior are likely going to have more life left. To a person who isn't really knowledgeable about subarus, the fact that it is a 94 will mean ALOT. On the island here I see 92-94 loyales from 2-5000 cdn at stealerships, whereas a mint gl (older) would be 1500-2000 cdn at a stealership. -

double slip joint rear axles. -update!!!!
bushbasher replied to bushbasher's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Im doing the double doj mod because I need an extra 1/8" of slip to stop the axles from pulling apart at full droop with my suspension lift. I will do away with the suspension lift later and go 6" body lift, but I want this mod for future long-travel coilover experimenting. -

it wobbles around on the splines. Is it beaten past some lump on the splines to get it on? edit: are ea81 axles different than ea82 axles on the outer cv? Does this double slip idea of putting ea82 cups on each end of an ea81 axle mean that I need to have an ea81 axle to put on a slip-cup outer cv? -
I need info on the double slip axles as well, namely, how do you get the non-slip joint off the outside so you can put a slip joint on the end??
-
no, fuel is a liquid, so temperature does not make much difference in volume, hence the density won't change and you won't get more fuel per squirt as you would air. I doubt you will notice any effects from cooling or heating the fuel.

crazy, slightly dumb project

yeah you want the dual port heads and lower compression pistons of a turbo motor. -
Should I? 90 Loyale Wg
bushbasher replied to DerFahrer's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
make a bush wagon!! Check for serious flaky rust around the struts, front frame channels, and rear suspension points. Tap them too with a small hammer or even a screwdriver, cause the undercoating can hide alot (I know from experience now ) Cut the fenders, put 27s on pugs or drilled toyota wheels and a dr tranny, paint it camo and giv'er! -
become a member of the byb ausubaru board, theres tons of ej swaps goin on down there.

hmm, ice would form, the oxygen would be too cold and not have the kinetic energy required to react...

How to get 220-230hp from 1.8turbo?
bushbasher replied to Tee Koo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
with completely custom heads I could see the 200+ level with turbocharging, but on stock heads no friggin way. Then the 3-main bottom end is the next thing to go. Why spend 4g on squeezing the last drop out of an inferior motor, when you can drop in a 2g ej turbo motor that will make more hp reliably, and be done with it?
