no subarus have locking rear ends. Rxs have 3.70:1 Limited Slip differentials. Maybe you are getting confused with the center diff lock on full-time 4wd transmissions. You could put an RX rear lsd in you car if you take the diff apart and swap the r&p with a 3.90:1 r&p

Pics of the new lift installed (if I can figure out how to post them)
bushbasher replied to northguy's topic in Off Road
thats a very nice brat! -
when its cold, put it in reverse, let out the clutch and sit there till something happens :-\ (till it warms up) Really just a thought, But i'm sure if something happened you might be able to better tell whats going on. But then again you just might frag reverse when that something happens

I see what Alexx is saying, and I kind of agree, that putting her in a big invincible suburban may cause her to think even less about her driving, because she wont fear getting hit so much, and she wont learn to be a safer driver. On the other hand, justys are little runts on the road, not very safe with all these big cars and suvs out there. A justy might make her more careful out of fear, but if she does get in another accident its more likely she'll be injured. I would put her in a medium sized car with an airbag.

Drivin' without a driveshaft??
bushbasher replied to kdr's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
you can take out the rear half of the driveshaft after the rubber donut thing, but that may or may not solve the vibration problem. -
sounds to me like people are measuring from different locations

4wd wagons with rx struts?
bushbasher replied to Martin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Are you sure that rx struts will lift an ea82 wagon? This doesnt seem to make sense to me, considering that the wagon is heavier, and even though the rx springs are stiffer, rxs are lower to the ground, with the same chassis. -
Well the lift and such is going slow... I now have all the parts minus bolts . Rear lift and t-case mount are both half done. I just have to keep plugging away at it. i don't want to reveal it till its finished The other day I managed to break both the shifter brackets on the tcase when I dropped it Oh well I need to make new ones anyways so they will fit.

well, theres always next year

Gen 1 off road tire selection
bushbasher replied to RavenTBK's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well if you look hard enough, you can find a TRUE off-road tire for a 13" rim, but you wouldnt want to get caught on-road with them I understand what you are saying though. -
Gen 1 off road tire selection
bushbasher replied to RavenTBK's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I got my wagon with winterfires on the back, they worked pretty well, still, they are not a true off-road tire, and they don't have much for sidelugs, which is important in mud. Still better than highway tread though -
always amazed at the numbers
bushbasher replied to tailgatewagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There are new gen subarus everywhere here, and the ea82 wagon is probably the most popular 80s wagon around. I see ea81s fairly regularly, but they are definitely outnumbered by ea82s and legacys. Ive seen a gen 1 coupe I think, may have seen a brat once when I was a kid, and I have seen a few turbowagons and rxs. Lots of stis and wrxs. Its really amazing when you go skiiing and you see wrxs and subarus of all kinds venturing up the mountain to do donuts and powerslides -
New pics of my wagon are up!
bushbasher replied to TROGDOR!'s topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
GD runs around with a rear 3" suspension lift, subarubrat is running 200hp on 2 or 3" of suspension lift, and neither of them have had problems yet. Really I dont think its too big of a problem. My car will have 2" suspension lift when it is finished as well. -
Solo II GLF UPDATE!!

I never woulda thought you could make an ea81 look that sleek . Especially a coupe! -

cantilever would be cool! Is your site up yet? how much travel is "all the available travel" ? -
need "aftermarket" parts what will fit?
bushbasher replied to subawoohoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I thought he was talking about a genII hatch? like ea81 not ea71? I guess Im still not clear on the years of transition from ea71 to ea81 :-\. -

bushbasher replied to subawoohoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes the discs from any 4wd turbo ea82 subaru should work. The rear suspension is a torsion bar type so increasing the spring rate in the rear would be hard. Sticking in a rear coilover from an ea82 car would make the rear too stiff because you would have the torsion bar and the coilover together making 2x the normal spring rate. In the front, the strut is composed of a spring on the outside and a shock absorber inside the assembly. You would have to do some research to find a kind of shock absorber insert that will fit inside the strut and have a stiffer rate. You can put a stiffer spring in the front which could also help. A larger sway bar from an rx will reduce body roll. Not sure about the power steering. -

I would get some 14" pugs with some rallyish tires on them, in the 25" tall range. You might have to trim a fender lip here or there, but it will be an improvement to the looks and performance. A weber carb would definitely help in powering you through those s-curves. Its all up to driver preference really, If you feel that body roll is killing you in the corners, you should look into adding stiffer swaybars from an rx, or perhaps stiffer front coils. If your car bucks and wallows when you drive it hard then get stiffer shock absorbers. hey soobme about how much would those long travel strut inserts cost? I'm definitely interested in that for my rig. -
I pulled out my silencer when I took off my fenders, and put a screen in the opening so gravel and junk wont make it into the airbox... Throttle response is noticeably better, It no longer hesitates for a split second when I punch the throttle hard. My dual exhaust definitely made more difference... probably several more feet of burnout possible now

the transmissions dont need a plate over the front shaft stubs, there is no way for oil to leak in or out anymore than when there are axles on. However it might look dumb if its not covered up. The rear output on a part-time 4wd tranny is strong enough to run a whole subaru off of, it should be no problem for a trike. A pushbutton 4wd manual or auto will work, as well as dual range manuals. Go with a part-time 4wd transmission though, full-time 4wd transmissions will have a center diff or clutch pack that wont send 100% power to the rear. However there are some ft4wd manual transmissions with a center diff lock, which could be locked, but you might as well go with a part-time tranny because theres no advantage for you in ft4wd, unless you want to make a 5wheel bike with 4 wheel drive

Electric supercharger??
bushbasher replied to 88xt6joe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
tesla was the man! bladeless turbines are cool, and their advantages seem to match with the application... high rpm, and they move air like a pump not like a fan. -
Guages and Stereo finally IN
bushbasher replied to Flow's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
maybe just drill some holes in the ceiling and floor of the cubby hole and let convection do its thing. -
a strut is a strut if it serves to take sideways bending stresses from the suspension, and acts as part of the geometry of the suspension. A coilover pivots on both ends and only takes stress longituditonally, along its axis. A strut needs to be built much stronger to take these side loads. It may be silly, but thats the way it is considered by the majority, no harm in going along with it.

what 14" rims can be drilled to fit my brat???
bushbasher replied to greggbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
older 2wd toyota, nissan, and mazda pickups often have 6bolt 14" wheels.
