  1. how about the hard pipe that routes exhaust from the headup to the intake, is that needed?
  2. Ok, next difficulty or issue or .... I know the EGR as not common on Spider intake and the NA spider has none. The EA82T has a port on the passenger side near the exhaust port that is was connected to the old intake with a hard pipe. The spider has no provisions for this connection. It does have the little solinoid or something that the FSM calls EGR solinoid but it is just connected to small vacuum lines. Can I just plug the hole in the head and skip the whole EGR thing? garner
  3. hey techworks, What are the I.D.s of the tubing for this EA82T crossover. Primaries? after merge collector? I have read that opening the crossover pipe too far slows down the exhaust and therefore increases turbo lag. What have you found in your pipe? In the photos I've seen, I can't tell if this crossover uses an up-pipe or is it one piece? garner
  4. John is the man. I wouldn't hesititate to buy a rig from him or to have him work on any Subaru. He knows his stuff and is in it for all the right reasons, the biggest being an intense passion for Subarus. If he spent more time at the computer and less under the hood, he'd be the answer man here on the board, but then he wouldn't be who he is... Let me tell you of our first meeting... I am at the local steel yard and I'm having some stock cut. The guy running the saw (John) turns and asks " is that your car out there?" some dude behind me chimes in and says " the vette? yeah thats mine" "f**k the vette, the Subaru" John says he was refering to my 94 Impreza wagon "Yep, that's my Subaru" he proceeded to tell me all about the local offroad club and show me pictures of some of the most insane subaru action I had ever seen. Sorry, I'm rambling but my point is, this guy loves Subarus: building, fixing, offroading, and talking about them. I respect and trust him. Having just been over to his shop, I can say he has a lot going on and seems to work nearly constantly. Give him a call, he nearly always answers the phone garner
  5. CIS, It's the single line disty which I guess has only advance? no retard (except me). So if I just supply manifold vacuum to the disty, thats all it needs?
  6. calebz, It's the 85 harness and on the MPFI intake there is a 3 nippled fitting (which I just sent to meeky moose) who's proper name escapes me. In my understanding, this thing senses coolant temp and sends vacuum to the disty. There is no provision for this on the spider but I bet I could drill and tap for the sensor (after I get a repalcement) ? What I don't understand is does the disty only need to advance when the coolant is cold? What if there was no advance on the disty?
  7. So, I am finally getiing my spider intake on my 85 EA82T (thanks dennisex24 and SVXPert) and I'm noticing some differences. Primarily, The 85 disty is a vacuum advance unit and unlike the MPFI manifold, there seems to be no provision for vacuum advance for the disty. I assume the XT used a crank angle sensor type advance deal (which I don't really understand and don't have a suitable FSM for an XT) Should I try to retrofit to make the 85 disty work or should I replace the disty with a newer version that doesn't use the vacuum advance system. As you may be able to tell, I am kind of clueless on how these advance sytems work, please school me! garner
  8. sub87dl that's a 72 honda 200T with moss growing on the seat. I just got a replacement title so it may hit the road again soon. I love old honda motorcycles. Oddcomp, I was thinking of that, or making a slightly smaller alt pulley? I'll need to examine the EA81 pulleys, The only one I have is a single belt and it isn't too heavy, replacing it aluminum might be mostly for bling-factor. I have contacted some CNC shops and should get some ballpark numbers on EA82 single and double pulleys soon.
  9. I will look into having pulleys CNC machined. Do any of you have spares you'd like to donate to the project. I need EA81 pulleys (how many variations are there, just 1 and 2 belt?) I think water pump, alt, and ps pulleys woould be cool too but mostly for the bling factor. Theres not that much weight to them Yes, Caboobaroo, I am interested to. I will be documenting the install of the EA82T into the Gen 1 and will keep everyone posted on its progress. Hope to have all the bugs worked out for the WCSS in august. Were is 78turbobrat? haven't heard from him for quite a while Note: I have pictures of my Non-AC alt bracket up now as well as some other stuff, actually a photo of the EA82T fit into the Brat engine bay, very tight. I sure don't want to have to do headgaskets or deal with HLAs after I get it in there
  10. Thanks for the Props guys. I had thought about the potential that others would want these things. If I made them 1 at a time they would be expensive. I was thinking about talking with some CNC machine shops to get some bids for small runs (10 or so at a time). I'll keep people posted. I thought the pulleys that Perrin and others maks for the Impreza were overpriced but after making this first pulley, That seems like a good deal. Perrin claims the pulley they make removes the equivalent of 100lbs of static weight from a car. Interesting, I don't really understand physics well enough but I do understand revs.
  11. So, I'm rebuilding this EA82T and got to a point where I ran out of things to do until some parts arrived. The first project was a lightened crank pulley. Check it out here I used 6061-T6 billet and my wee little South Bend metal lathe. The stock pulley weighs over 3lb12oz. Mine weighs 12oz. It could likely be made quite a bit lighter as I went pretty conservative on thickness and didn't drill anything out. As you can see I also ditched the AC and PS so I need only one belt. Super Non AC alt bracket photo up now
  12. oops, I sort of forgot the part about "mechanical" I see what you're talking about now. I believe the adapter to fit the "idiot light" is the way to go. I believe the pressure relief valve is important.
  13. in a heart beat, if I had that kind of dough. I actually prefer the 02-03 sti that never made it to the states but I'd take the 04 i geuss. When they first made it to my local dealer they were not doing test drives. It was a pay for it now and we'll put you on the list deal. They were actually getting substantialy more than msrp for them as well. I need to see if they'll let me drive one these days, maybe the hype has died down
  14. I just bought a SOA oil pump with the sesor for a guage rather than the sensor for the "idiot light" Is this an aftermarket unit? The sensor screws into the whole lower and to the right of the hole you marked B. I think that is the only place for it. I believe you need the pressure relief so unless the sensor has that built into it, I would avoid using that hole for the pressure sensor I believe you can buy just the SOA sensor that should work with an aftermarket guage hope this helps garner
  15. I'd keep the EA81T a Turbo. Those motors are getting pretty damn rare and it seems like you could pretty easily swap someone who wanted a T for an NA version. I do understand your hesitation in maintaining the EA81T. It just seems like you're talking about a pretty involved rebuild/swap and in the end we'll have one less EA81T on the road
  16. check out what I won on the Bay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2462504362&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOAB:US:6 yes, $10.51! Not bad ehh?
  17. so, in studying the diagrams a bit more, it seems a little less complicated than I'd thought. It is amazing how much the wire colors for various things are very similar if not the same. I plan to use as much of the Brat wiring as possible. I wonder however, Am I going to need to swap relays/fuses etc for the newer fuel pump, ignition, etc. Or are these things pretty much the same in terms of electrical requirements. I have photo copies of the EA82T wiring diagram and they are hard to read. Hopefully when I get my FSM from tailgatewagon, it will shed some more light on the issue.
  18. Nice Link!!! I've thought about spending the big bucks on an FSM for my Impreza, but now I don't have to. thanks
  19. OK So, I'm preparing to swap an EA82T into my gen 1 brat. Among other difficulties, the wiring harness issue is starting to haunt me. I'm not there yet, but I'm trying to plan ahead. I am trying to determine the best strategy for getting the motor and electricity to work together. I have the entire harness from the EA82T wagon and all the existing wiring is still in place (and everything works!) in the Brat. Should I: 1. Replace the entire Brat harness, body harness included, with the EA82T harness.? 2. Merge the engine harness with the Brat's dash and body harness? 3. something else. Obviously the EA82T harness is about a cubic yard of wire and the Brat has a harness that would fit in a coffee can (I'm exagerating, but...) The EA82T has a ton of stuff I won't be using (power locks, windows, ac, trip computer, etc) so I'm planning on cutting that stuff out or perhaps getting connectors involved to allow the re-integration at a latter date if I so choose. what should I do? what should I do? thanks garner
  20. I guess part of my problem is that I just put some Tarmac 2 's on and I hate looking at those unsightly drums in the rear. Actually, the brakes are not bad on my TS. I'm just thinking ahead. As I work to make the car faster, it seems I should also start to worry about braking faster. I'd love to be able to use bigger front discs and some more performance minded pads etc.
  21. Thanks folks yes, it does suck that they put drumms on these cars. That's why I want to do the swap. thanks for searching for me on the NASIOC It seems like my account has been deactivated or something keep it coming garner
  22. Hey all, I know its possible to swap some parts to put discs on an 03 TS. What I need to know is... Anybody have first, second, or even third hand experience with this swap? Complete parts list. What all is needed, what models of donor cars are suitable, etc. I have looked over at NASIOC but for some reason, I can't search the forums there, nor can I post:( (USMB is so much cooler anyway) any other ideas hair brain or not will be read thanks garner

  24. Hey Techworks, I generally understand the concept and advantage of equal length headers over un-equal length but what kind of real numbers would we expect? When I say unequal lenth, I mean a redesigned, better flowing header where the two primaries merge rather than one teeing into the other. Perhaps a usefull comparison would be like the Borla VS. TWE equal lenth on an Impreza have you guys done any tests like this?
