freak, do you know what type of steel sway bars are made out of, as in what alloy? I know I'll have to do some hardening once I'm done but if I had a clue what alloy it would make it easier garner
-
First let me apologize for how vague I am going to be about this..... *cough, cough, stealth project cough* long story short, I need to either cut and weld or heat and bend a 20mm swaybar (don't ask why) anyone know what type of steel they are made of? are they are actually spring steel or just high carbon? I don't caer too much about getting it back to it's exact harness etc but want it to be close and especially don't want it to bend or break too easly heating and bending is my prefered method of modification thanks for your ideas (hair brained or not) garner

Finally Got the Brat to the Dyno!!!
garner replied to garner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have the Delta 266 er something (search for "delta Cams" to find better specifics), sort of their mild performance cam. makes idle pretty lumpy but does amke a huge difference in performance and revs (I'm serious about this, no joke) garner -

Thats 190 to the crank on a lightly modded wrx.....you're kicking that thing's azz. btw, wait about a year or so to kill me cause you'll only have to drive up to Bonne, NC (wife just got a teaching job at ASU) instead of four days to Eugene, OR....... garner -

I know you all hate me now but just thought I'd point out that one of my photoshop details was changing the "power at" from crank to wheels that means this lightly modded wrx is putting only 190 ish to the crank..... WJM is kicking this things azz at the wheels..... alright, no more jokin around. I'll really get to the dyno soon.... garner -

doooods, April frickin fools foos That dyno chart is from a lightly modded WRX with a little photoshop action on top. Damn, I was so sure someone would call me out on it...... Will, you're still the man (atleast until I actually get to the dyno, hold on to your glory for now) In truth however, I hope to be real close to that chart once I'm fully tuned, I don't think 200whp is out of the question. we'll see when I get REAL numbers, then again, you probably won't believe me when I do.... sorry, I've had my fun garner -
I just got set of KYB GR-2s for the rear end of obe of my rigs, only $45 each..... Good struts too.... how much cheaper are the Gabriels? garner

totally dude, I'm going heads up display from an F-16 actually, I tried to get one of those things to work in the Brat, after several hours f@#%^&g around with the heat gu, I ended up twisting the damn thing into a knot and throwing it across the shop in a fit of rage!!!! bottom line is, they no worky in gen 1 brat garner

we had a fan but it wasn't really big enough. Even though they had an all wheel dyno, they were much more into the big block muscle car sort of thing. I'll take my own box fan next time... garner -
So, after much procrastinating I finally made it to the one dyno in the area.... Pretty happy with the results, I only had time to make two proper pulls. One at stock TDO4 wastegate boost (roughly 7psi) and one at about 9psi. I'm still dialing my afrs so I'm not ready to really crank it up to 14+ psi.....I'm sure I can break the 200whp mark with more boost. check it out not bad ehh? garner

my wagon caught fire!!!!!!!!!!
garner replied to subaru_styles's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Damn!! you mean it didn't catch fire!!! Man, I was sure I used enough gas.... oh well, there's always next time Happy April Foos day Foo!!! garner -
sidewayz, yes, they are stupid stiff springs for sure. My plan is to use these as a mock up sort of thing. Once, I can determine exactly what I want in terms of length and rate, I'll order eibach springs from ground control. One of my main motivations in using this type of set up is dialing in the ride height. And compared to blown struts and tired springs, anything would be an improvement..... good tip on the circle track coilover set up, I'll do some research on that as well. The ebay coilover set up deal is kind of cheesey but it's cheap and according to the folks running them, they work ok. garner

The two primary factors are Map and RPM. It is these two variables within which you program injection volumes. Intake air sensor (has to be added) and coolant sensor make minor adjustments based on air density and temp of motor..... O2 sensor can be used to make minor modifications or simply monitor your AFR. Kind of pointless unless you're going with a wide band O2 (and I suggest you do) garner

lol, a borrowed tool will do anything I just removed the bearings from some XT6 knuckles. Turned a custom aluminum drift to fit perfectly. My BFH is 6lbs and is was still a P.I.T.A. I will press in the new bearings. btw, many industrial bearing houses can get you replacements for automotive bearings. SOA wanted $150 a side for XT6 fronts, bearing house, $35 a side.......and absolutely the same bearing, just no stars on the box..... garner

so, looking at my options on ebay I find two distinct styles these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7963791483&category=33582 and these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7964510865&category=33582 the second look just like what calebz has, the first looks, well wierd. What I don't understand about the first is what keeps the tupe from spinning when you turn the perch? Anyone have any wisdom on this? garner
-
Calebz has one of the tightest non-spider TMIC installs I've seen. The spider makes it even cleaner looking. rrrrrrrvvvrrrvrvrvrr!!! ppssssttt!!! I love BOV's venting to atmosphere but doesn't it run like a turd off throttle with stock engine management? I had to reroute to recirc until i went megasquirt....but now I'm bact to..... rrrrrrrvvvrrrvrvrvrr!!! ppssssttt!!! garner

cool, So with 4 inches of adjustment, I can go from "slammed" to mild lift with 4 inches of adjustment. My goal is to have the Brat play "Transformer" and go from slammed street rig to gravel road bomber with the twist of a wrench or two and swapping wheels and tires.... we'll see.... for struts, atleast for the rear, I'm going with 4wd wagon rears. According to my FSM, they are nearly the shortest but have the longest travel. I'm doing custom top mounts for the tops so I can set my starting height where ever I want.... on the ebay coilovers, those springs are 2.5" correct? so one could swap them out with ground control springs or the equivelent.... Tex, are your ebay coilovers wrx spec? garner
-
Hey all you ebay coilover users (subaru_styles, SubaruTex, Calebz anyone else?) I need some more info on your set ups. 1. what struts are you using front and rear? 2. what is the "free length" of said springs? 3. what is your total range of height adjustment? 4. are all of you using WRX spec kits off ebay? many thanks in advance for your info and experience. garner

This is absurd...

didn't buy Bosch by any chance did you? Use only NGK plugs in Subarus. I dropped 6 mpg on my 03 TS after foolishly thinking Bosch platinums were work $5 each, swapped back to NGK and reset the computer, prest back up to 28-30 (unless I did like a maniac) O2 sensors are really important too... garner -
true that..... it would be one hell of fab job to get an ej flywheel to mate to an ea motor or tranny, and for what purpose? There's a good reason mudrat modifies the ea flywheel for ej motor swaps rather than using the ej flywheel. bottom line, the ej and ea have totally different flywheels garner
