EA82T: how bad are gen1 heads, really?
garner replied to Snowman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'd use them, I have cracked (between valves) gen ones on my EA82T, I had them pressure tested and they are fine. You do get some sort of warrantee from them right? It does seem suspect that they would say they were from an 89 though.... From what I gather, I don't think Gen 3 are the holy grail garner -
Anyone near Boone, NC or been there?
garner replied to garner's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
thanks for the reply, No a small town doesn't scare me, Eugene is only 140k or so and at times it seems big to me.... I love the idea of maybe having a house with a BIGA$$ garage/shop. Not sure what I'd do for money while there but maybe the wife will bring home the bacon for the both of us If I move there, I'll definately have to build an off road Subaru. I'm really more of a street guy, but I can learn. I bet the area has some sweet twisties to rip the Impreza down. garner -
Hey there, My wife is interviewing for a professorship (tenure track) possition at ASU in Boone, NC Anyone in the area or know much about it? It seems like a beautiful place but very small....Any insights? I have done a bit of web surfing looking into the general info but it's always good to get the opinions of subaru-nutz.... garner

Opps, I was thinking of Washington. We we thinking of moving back to Seattle.... Thanks for the clarification garner

I had to get mine at the dealer. All the Napa,, etc part houses looked at me like I was crazy... Dealer had lots in stock, they are cheap garner

Interesting...... Is there age at which a vehicle becomes exempt? I think in Portland, OR (where they have smog inspections) after a vehicle reaches 25 years old, no smog is required. only if they catch you garner

I've always thought "federal" meant the rest of us, as in California and Federal

I know, Newton was a pretty smart guy, but check this out http://www.unorthodoxracing.com/dyno_wrx.html 10hp and 18flbs over stock on a wrx. I don't believe dynos lie, companies maybe..... or this from Perrin http://www.perrinperformance.com/Products/WRX/Crank_Pulley.htm I know that on my motor the light flywheel mostly and light crank pulley make the thing spin up like a friggin jet.... I don't totally believe the hype when it comes to after market crank pulleys but I do believe that they "free up power" not actually make it but let the engine get more torque and hp to the ground Just some thoughts/observations... garner

LWB=Lubricated Windsheild Bearings???

Ooops, I must have used the "bling aluminum" instead of the performance stuff....It definately adds visual hp though..... Myx, you are the man we aught to all send you money for your dyno testing, you are giving us real #s and not just a bunch of "I estimate I'm putting down X" As for the results, I am surprised. I didn't expect more than a couple hps out of the pulley but I wonder why it's lower? not a chance the results were reversed? I would also think the torque would go up as more could get to the wheels.. It is odd that the AFR is so different, I can't explain that with no changes to fuel delivery or intake...very odd....It was colder on the second run session which could explain a little leanness but not that much... I've said it before but try a pull with the AC belt removed, I'm really curious how much hp that compressor robs... keep it up and keep us posted garner

carb pistons in ea82t for performance build
garner replied to Jeepman775's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
All OEM subaru pistons are cast, you have to big big bucks for forged pistons for these motors... On a related note, has anyone used NA heads on a turbo block/pistons? Obviously, work would need to be done to plumb the turbo but I wonder what the compression ratio would jump to? It would be an easy(er) way to raise compression without spliting blocks/swapping pistons etc... just a thought... garner -
Doh!! Russ, Sorry I missed you, I just found my cell phone the other day.... Would have been cool to meet you, ah well, next time... btw, you said above that you hung out at the Baltic Room, I did all the metal fab and bar top for that place when it first opened (was called Kid Mohair) I don't know how much of it is still there, but that's my handy work of about 10 years ago. Just a little coincidence... hope you had a good trip garner

How much power can EA82T stand?
garner replied to Tee Koo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Myx, Did you ever get your dynos for the RX? I'd love to know what the "base line" is on the EA82T....Also what that beautiful pulley did for it..... I want dyno numbers on my motor not for bragging rights but to shed some reality on the subject and to have some real numbers. I get tired of the guesses at what people are getting out of their motors. It's easy to assume that starting with 115hp stock, adding exhaust (+25hp) adding an intake (+25hp) and turning up boost (+40hp) all the sudden, their "getting 205hp" Yeah right!!! My motor .5mm overbored EA82T Balanced everything Ported and Polished heads 5 angle valve job -7lbs light flywheel Delta Cams TDO4 (ported and polished "hot side") (~8lbs for now) WRX TMIC Gutted WRX down pipe "Garner-Tronix" header "Garner-Tronix" Ultralight Crank Pulley MegaSquirt (soon to be MS&S Extra) I honestly think if I get to 150whp, that will be amazing. I don't want to bust anyones bubble and I encourage people to get the absolute max out of these motors, I believe they are a good, cheap platform for haulin rump roast but really, I don't see them putting out an honest 200whp....But, I'd love to be proven wrong, and know what the secret is.... I'll keep you posted with what I find... garner -
Sweet, Good score! I ordered one today. Just the toy I've been needing!!! (actually I'd like the top of the line model but....) Yes, it is dated technology but for $36 ish shipped, who cares? I'll let you know what kind of #'s I pull... garner

You Tell Em Brother!!! In a few weeks, I'll hit the local chasis dyno. I should have some fine tuned fuel maps and hopefully spark maps as well. Anyone want to hazard a guess at what I'll pull? garner -
Santa needs help on which megasquirt to bring me!
garner replied to Subarutex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Tex, I paid $165.50 shipped for the DIY Kit with cable. It is supposed to be a pretty heavy soldering job but I'm up for it. I skipped the display as I will tune via megatune and use my Autometer AFR as the in dash display. It will be a much more accurate real time display getting simulated NB voltage. The sensor itself is from 1stvwparts.com (1stsubarupars.com is the same dealership) VW parts # 021-906-262-B (about $45 shipped) Its the Bosch LSU4 WB sensor and for what ever reason, VW sells them as OEM parts for about half price..... For the Megatune software for use with MS&Sextra, get the latest version from this page... http://megasquirt.sourceforge.net/extra/files/ I'm using version 225b326, it looks like 225b331 is even newer, like I said, this stuff moves quick..... garner -

Tex, I am running MS & S extra code. (yes, actually running in the Brat) See this page for more info about MS & S extra http://megasquirt.sourceforge.net/extra/index.html The hardware mod is crucial and if you dig around that site in the setting up page there are actually two ways to make the hardware mod. I am using the "old" way, running spoark out the Fast Idle pin. On our cars, we don't need fast idle control, just 12v+ and ground to the Aux Air Valve. The "new" way runs the spark control out one of the LED pins. I don't really see one being better than the other in our application. As for the code, don't worry too much about how it comes from the builder. By the time you get it and install it there will likely be a new code version or two. This stuff moves really quick and one of the things you'll need to do is load and upgrade the code your self. In fact, this is how you make the Subaru stock coolant temp sensor work. Yes, I do use the relay board. I think it makes for a cleaner and simpler install and offers some "oh s*%t" protection if you get some wires crossed or something. It has built in relays and fuses for protection. It is a really easy soldering project too... It is a few $$ but I think it's well worth it. I've ordered a Tech Edge Wide Band O2 sensor kit and will be building it and using it to get some good maps built. Since we have virtually the same set up, I'll be happy to share my maps with you for a starting point. In the mean time, get the newest version of Megatune and test drive it and get to know what it offers and what you have to plug into it in terms of values. Just a little home work while your waiting for hardware. Man, it's a bit of work but you're going to love it garner -
Updated oddcomp's MS n' EDIS fuel/DIS
garner replied to a topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
[quote name=TomRhere Actually, I have one now... What Ford model would I be looking for to get the EDIS off of for a 6 cylinder engine? Not up on current Ford models at all..[/quote] See this site for suggested vehicles etc http://megasquirt.sourceforge.net/extra/findedis-nam.html and this site for more general MS&S extra info http://megasquirt.sourceforge.net/extra/index.html GO FOR IT!!!! It would make an engine swap so much easier to avoid merging harnesses, I should know... garner -
Just thought I'd report back now that I can tell you just how much undersized the stock injectors are, especially when coupled with the stock ecu. LAst night I did some datalogging of pulls from idle to redline (and beyond) here is the details at the peak of my highest rev 7500 rpm (Man this thing revs!!!!) 150 kpa (7psi boost) Injector duty cycle = 149%!!!! I was only there for a second but I'm fairly certain I would start knocking and or the injectors would explode if I left my foot in it. We'll see what WRX stock injectors do.... garner

Updated oddcomp's MS n' EDIS fuel/DIS
garner replied to a topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm Squirted!!! I'm Squirted!! MWUUUHHUU HHAAA HHAAA HA Still have a bit of fussing to get the spark part of the deal going Subyrally, this thread should be an inspiration but what you really aught to be reading is the MegaManual. Anyone considering this, and I think you should, don't think you're just going to plug this thing in an take off. It's totally doable but no matter how much help anyone can give you, it is a DIY project. I think it is important to spend a bunch of time reading the manual (I know, I know, I don't usually read the manual) Even if you skip the assembly and buy a pre-built kit, the rest of the manual is crucial. Part of what makes this so cool is that YOU build it (or buy it, whatever) and YOU tune it. Not like my WRX friends that have to pay $100's an hour for dyno-tuning. But, if you are going to tune your own engine, you have to understand what is going on in the code and on your engine As Shadow quoted above, I got mine running and even with a half rump roast VE table (important term) and a lot of tuning to do, the brat runs much better than it ever did on stock engine management. Start up is instant, idle quality is superb even with the Delta cams and low (around 850, I was never able to get it to idle stedily below about 1200) and pedal response is smooth. I have a few flat spots to tune out but for a first whack at it I am very very happy (excuse me, I must do this) and Props to shadow and oddcomp for the help and encouragement MS RULES garner
