  1. compression comes from the pistons and not the heads the difference between spfi and car heads is the carb heads has egr ports on the side of the exhaust ports. depending on emissions in your state, you can put carb heads on the spfi block to retain the egr piping system, orjust go the simpler route and out the carb intake on the spfi lo9ng block, if you would be eliminating all theat piping from the exhaust ports
  2. #1 cylinder is the front on the passenger side, rotation is counterclockwise 1,3,2,4 is this ea82 or ea81 motor?
  3. yo we have the go-ahead to get the trashwagon replica from iowa, we will be hading out tonight and arriving in the morning, we need to bring this car back and have it painted by friday night, so we can take it on the hot rod power tour we will be going from milwaukee to indianapolis. from there we will deviate the power tour and head out to columbus. jason, john, ed, jim, we will be in the area come sun/mon, maybe if we can stay over each place tim will be bringing his camera and may want interviews about miles fox and the subaru alliance. also i will have a camera for my own footage and on top of that, jerry henry from L.A, a camera man for hire who has been behind the camera for shows like monster garage and monser house, will be along for the ride making a movie about tim making a movie about me, who is making a movie about a guy making a movie about a guy making a movie who is having a movie made about him making a movie about,...anyway there will be 3 cameras we may hit the junk yard in columbus, we will have the tow dolly to move cars around for john. we will also be going to for t wayne to pick up my rx from zanny dooks. this will all be within the upcoming week after this week i cam make plans for an east coast trip if anyone still wants me out there, i will have till august 1st before any court dates
  4. yo tim i will ask if anyone can burn the original non shrunk pics on a cd, and i can put them on my website the sedan did better than i anticipated, such as the temp, it ran cooler on the trail than it does on the highway. jason let me use his tires, the ones i had were wider and bader so my car would not have gone through half of what it did without them. the hill in the mud pit my car would have made it if i was closer to first in line, but by the time it was my turn it had rained and the bottom was too sloppy to get a running start. me and danny were stuck at the bottom of the hill, i got hung up on a pipeline and danny got me off of it, but we both needed a tow up the hill we all had enough radios to go aound, each driver and the spotter had radios so communication was great and made for good organization. without the radios we would be all traffic jammed in eachothers way. we had to hollar to let one car through at a time, this made it easier to catch each car on tape for each obstacle. jason pulled the bronco out of a hole and another truck. aftetr we got back to the "parking lot" some drunk hillbillies came around dissing soobs like "cars had no business being back there", showing up after the matter not knowing we owned their trails, walking through obstacles that others have rolled their vehicles in. it was all good fun, jim did well for never being baja'n, same for ed, the rx had a taction advantage. this for myself was the most technical and extreme off roading i have ever been in. i got stuck only once, not including the hill, because i doubled back after i made it through to lend some assistance, and got up against a tree to the side of my car. i got a little crease in my door but i can live with that.
  5. ok let me clear up some mis-information i am reading about the axles. use the ones you have. for 2 reasons 1. ALL 3at autos are 23 splines, same as dual range non turbo trannies 2. the 3at turbo axle has the same diameter doj and axle shaft as 25 spline axles. another thing about at gear ratio, this will not apply to your build, but here goes. all turbo at's are 3.7 85-86 turbo or non are 3.7. 87 and later non turbo at's are 3.9 there you go.
  6. from what i have seen the 87 harness is more like the 88 and up, but may have connectors like 86 models, such as the disty and such. the cruise will mount physically and will swap. the dash should support it, you will need the appropriately matched steering column/wheel to match.
  7. yo im in columbus right now today. but im in indiana till the alliance meet. IMMEDIATELY after the alliance meet im moving to amillawauka wis-tune permanently. anyway what kind of deal would you make for the parts? we are running out to IOWA between tues and thurs after memorial weekend, what will you be doing. we could use some drivers as we will be attempting to bring back 3 or 4 vehicles in one trip. gotta have a trashwagon replica before june 4 for the power tour. anyway keep in touch and hold on the parts for me if they are not going anywhere
  8. sorry i havent been online all week, but i have found that ea82 strut caps will fit on legacy struts. so im sure they will fit on the impreza struts as well. coil compressor tools required
  9. yo i will be bringing an 8mm video camera to themeet. i have plenty of tapes. sorry i lost my 4wd when my rear diff fell out of my sedan, but im still down for off roading. i have a tow strap should i get stuck, heva teh 4wd handy!
  10. did you get into the timing belts at all? ea81 or ea82 subaru? anyway adjust your ign timing with the o deg mark. unplug the vac line and plug it off when setting initial timing. if its fuel injection plug in the green clips on the firewall on the driver side to adjust the initial timing. rotating the disty to the left advances and to the right retards it. http://www.warpthree.com/milesfox/subaru/service/service.htm
  11. my car rarely ticks. i ran my oil for 5 k miles or so before i changed it. fresh oil and filter she ticked for a day or 2 and it went away. if other seals are leaking this will provide a loss of oil pressure to the top end as the oil is going out of the motor rather than to the lifters run some atf in your oil and run it till your next oil change, at least a good 1000 miles or a weeks worth of daily driving or maybe a month.
  12. maybe myself. just only if i had the parts to mock up. ea81 turbo wagon rx conversion i foretell to the future! trashwagon8
  13. yeah you had a blown head gasket the milkshake was not related to the cracks, pull any good head or the one off the other side of the motor and they will be there if they make you uncomfprtable smoosh the crack down with a drift. its all metal and no water passage, the very worst that can happen is a valve seat will fall out in severe cases for example, my buddy had this rx ea82 gen II turbo heads, pulled them off cause of a rod knock. cracks between the valves. cracks all the way down to the valve guides. port and polish and carb compression block and road trips and 10k mile later no problems
  14. yeah i will be there. noah if you are coming from all that way tou could go the route i take locally it would probably be fastest driving rather than toll roads and going across east before south. let me know for sure if and when you come and i can direct you down state routes.
  15. the one bolt that holds the trailing arm to the tube frame, not on the side with the 3 bolts, but the inner part wit the one bolt, drill the holes on the tube fram to use the larger ea82 bolt.
  16. the single digit codes are model designation, such as 48 states or what tranny it has
  17. use a mild detergent mixed with water, a spray bottle to dispense it, a soft brush to scrub, and a shop vac to extract the water. this will simulate the actions of professional upholstery cleaning such as a sprayer vacuum wand.
  18. maybe i can make it next weekend. i plan to be out to jims the wed after next weekend. yeah the sedan needs a the driveshaft put in and another rear diff
  19. make a notch on the side piece that has the 3 bolts to make room for the brake line, that or swpa on the ea81 brake line on the pivot part that bolts to the tube frame, you will have to drill out the holes and use the larger ea82 bolt
  20. if you order ea82 parts ask for a 90 loyale. if ea81 parts ask fopr 84 wagon or 87 brat, as there will be no confusion over these vs say for example 85 2wd 5spd ea82 wagon and 85 2wd 5spd hatch. same year and driveline, different parts. 90 loyale will eliminate any ea81's and 87 brat will eliminate ea82's as far as confusions of listings
  21. if the carb runs like dook make sure all the electricals to it are working
  22. the ea81 is narrower than the ea82 based xt6, so the problem lies in the axles being too long. i have this idea that 3at turbo ea82 23 spline doj will fit on 25 spline axles such as xt6, legacy, impreza. i would like to discover if ea81 t axle shafts themselves will fit on the innards of the 3at turbo or 25 spline doj's, and the outer end of the xt9/leg/imp cv will fit, all on the turbo ea81 axle. this would be the key to unlocking the 5 lug ea81 setup refer to this post: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36159
  23. if this ea81 motor is carbed, hook up the disty to the cool and let all the mpfi harness stay connected as it is to the coil. the coil will work like it was carbed as well as the tachometer. any of the other mpfi connectors just tuck them away and everything will work like its supposed to
  24. you ended up with ea82 wires the hatch will fall into 80-84 listings. ea82's fall into 85-94 listings sometimes the hatch will be listed 80-89 and ea82 85-89, since 90-94 is loyale(ea82) make sure to specify ovc or ohc, the first being ea81 and latter being ea82
  25. everyone is so down on the haynes manual, but i find it rather useful. all the chiltons i see are too in general to be specific the heaynes book is rather good i think as it shows valve lashes, engine specifications, ecu trouble codes, and wiring schematics the "Known Problem" with the haynes book is the timing belt procedure skips a picture, but the text DOES mention the 360 deg crank rotation. be sure to read the text british translation can be confusing. dont go by the pics alone. i think its laid out rather well and the newer editions cover the air suspension. these are my opinions. yeah i know timing belts and head torquing sequences, firing orders without the book, the book doesnt even mention axles, but i find myself refering to it often for electrical schematics or ecu codes. its not total crap and is handy to have around
