1987 Brat 4WD, 4spDR
pulling the motor is easy. you do not need to take off the starter to pull the motor or replace the clutch. might as well replace the rear crank seal since the motor is out. try this to remove the flywheel: use a 10 or 12mm wrench, box end on a pp bolt(once it's removed) and butt the open end against the engine stud this will allow you to remove or torque the flywheel mounting bolts. if you dont have a torque wrench, tighten down by hand (snug with a wrench, but no torque on it.)then torque 1/4 turn. same for pp bolts

1986 ea82T in an 83 turbo wagon
we all know that an ea82 fits nicely in an -84 body. if you ever seen an ea81T has similar setups an ea82, vane MAF, battery on driver side, and similar components on the manifold. so how different is the 83 and 84 ecu and mpfi system than an 85-86 ea82? and how compatible would the ecu and mpfi work for the components on the other motor?

shawn, sorry to say but zanny dook forgot the sweater in the white ford truck, the one that pulled out the legacy. you got one of their numbers... any word on the sedan from desmoines? tom, one of your vice grips was left in subiemech's car. it may have gotten mixed in my tools. i will have to go through them. anyway in case you noticed you didnt have it.... kurt, if there is anything we owe towards the cabin let me know. it may be a while, but i will see what i can come up with for you, vicky, and mr starry. i have a jop opportunity available and i am going to jump on it like stink on rice. currently i am working any available hour on my boss's house. i did however manage to make it back home with 15 bucks left. gas was pushing 2 bucks our last fill-up. kurt pulled a lot of weight in the recovery effort, i just want that to be acknowledged. junkie, i might not be thge "sharpest pencil" but no one else would have fixed a ball joint and an axle off the side of the road and drive with a suspended license for 2 hours after. and if it was broken and undriveable, i would have stayed with it and got it to a secure location. sorry tom for not calling you, but its like me to show up out of the blue. i would not have driven it if i didnt trust my repair. if the axle was broken or missing parts, 4wd would have got it back the same. subarus are a lot tougher and more reliable when broken than people give them credit for, or are trusting to drive them like that for that matter. broken axle, 4wd and bent trailing arm all winter long, and 2wd diff lock across country. used timing belts all the way! it has been done, no question avout it!

5 lug conversion candidates help
my setup uses ea82 lower control arms, drilled out to accept the xt ball joint. i did this because my xt control arm had a the bolt seized in the bushing i used the xt6 knuckle, caliper, and tie-rods. i used LEGACY struts, with ea82 spring and ea82 strut cap. the legacy strut knuckle attatchment had to be widened for the xt knuckle, and the holes are bigger than the xt bolts. i used the xt bolts. i was going to use the legacy axles, but i couldnt get the nuts off. i used the legacy ball joint to replace one that was bad on the xt knuckle, it fits the same

Tim, it turns out that the PD got my message, and now i am re-scheduled for june 21. matt got picked up off the street by officer duhammel no sooner than he came outside, he was going to turn himself in today. all is good, i worked with eli 10 hours today. i am seriously considering moving to fort wayne with zanny dook if i get hired on at this cleaning place. but i still intend to keep my operations at the carbola. although i like it at mo-dub, i need a more consistent environment if i want more than just a half put together subaru. i hope everyone made the best of their experiences this week. oh, yeah, tim, we owe mister starry 100 bucks, 50 towards the car, and 50 fopr the tilte work. i will try to rack up my hours while theyre available.

we got home in one piece at 10:30 this morning. trashwagon has a bent tierod and its tearing up a tire. multiple off the side of the road adjustments didnt help much, how can you eyeball an alignment? matt has a warrant, and is hiding in the apartment like he doesnt know what to do. hopefully i dont have one myself. but it wouldnt surprise me if my public pretender fails me. oh well, nothing out of the ordinary. at any rate, we had more fun the way it all went down, more fun than if everything went right. im going to take a nap:burnout:

still at subiemech's, just getting around to going home. zanny dook wrecked my car. it was a combination of my jackass move and his inexperience behind the wheel. this is how it goes.... we went to des moines to do the head gasket on the sedan. we spent most of the day till 4 pm, got it all together, and some title work done. it needed a fuel pump from sitting for 10 years. we drove the turbo wagon to subiemech's. but it ran out of oil 3 miles from his house. we stopped and added oil. we tried to find zook spur. what is with these iowa roads? all of these roads with the same name, like oak st, oak ave, oak blv, oak place, i dont get it. zook road or zook place? anyway in fear of cooking the motor, i decided to stop the wagon and use my car to find the place first. yeah i was driving, but only on a county road after the car was acting up, 3 miles form our destination. so shoot me why dont you. anyway, in an act of frustration, i see a farmer lane and ABRUPTLY lay on the brake and cut the wheel, sliding sideways to a stop. just then here comes a trashwagon with the front wheel s locked up, plowing into the rear quarter. DONT LOCK THE BRAKES, he could have steered around. oh well, what do you expect. im not mad. minimal damage, a busted headlight(that tow hook wrapped up there) and a broken taillight, and *light* damage just on the corner of the bumper. so we got the wagon to subiemech's safe and sound otherwise. we got in subiemech's ride to go after the sedan. a battery and a fuel pump later i attemted to start her. after some long cranking she finally lit up. the carb is junk from sitting. i got it to warm up and would you knbow it, we had a fire. matt runs off like he thought it was going to blow up. i said that only happens in hollywood. this is iowa. we had to push the car and 3-point turn to get close to a hose, after the fire extinguisher was inoperable. so we had to leave it there. subiemech is going to take delivery to his place with a tow dolly. we are going home, the guys are fixing my headlight right now. one day i will be back, with a turbo, and hell, trashwagon 5's motor for the sedan. i already have a 2wd 5spd flywheel modified to fit an ea82, so that will get it back home. was it a wasted effort? well, at least both vehicles are secure, and now we know what they will need to drive back to indiana. see iowa another day...

Ball Joint failure, eyesore in the middle of iowa
after we got unstuck, we took eyesore into the nearest town until we could make our way back home. just as you would have it, the ball joint popped out, and tore the axle out of the DOJ. luckily we found 4 of the bearings under the car, one in the doj, and one 200 feet behind. i got it all back together, saving the axle, but the circlip is missong, and the boot is gone. but it got us back to coon rapids no problem. i used some steel cable to tie the ball joint to keep it from popping out again. miles fox saves the day! sorry tom never heard from me, was pulling his hair trying to locate his car, till it up and shows up in his driveway. i say get new ball joints!!!!

cooler thermostat wanted.. part #??
look for a chevy smallblock thermostat, 54 mm. they have 160, 170, and 180 deg, at the napa store. you may have to make a small hole for the air bleed.

Midwest 2 Status/Recovery updated:(and how to send $)
well, here i am with both cars, eyesore and subiemech, all safe and sound. would you know that we had a ball joint failure and it ripped the axle apart. luckily i found 4 of the barings under the car, one in the doj, and the last one 200 feet behind the car. we had to use subiemechs car to make a run to the hardware. i managed to put the axle back to gether, and set the ball joint. i used some steel cable to tie the ball joint up to keep it from popping out again. i saved the axle, but the boot is shot. no other damage excep for the corner of the fender got pushed in a little. subiemechs car lost its inner fender skirt, and the sheetmatal was acting as a wing, so we had to remove it. but i brought a fender to fix all of that, so it would have come off anyway. i told the dude in the legacy that we were taking eyesore and subiemech's car to onowa, and to send someone back to us to take us back to my car, so we can all meet at the campsite. well, no one came, and we broke down, and then had to go to the campground ourselves in subiemech to recover matt and out stuff. miscommunication? well, we are all good now. so now we are setting off to deliver subiemechs car to his place, and to see about keeping the sedan and wagon from demoines over there. although eyesore was very frustrated about not knowing the whereabouts of his ride, it in the end saved him t he hassle of trying to find a way to get it, same for subiemech. i pulled through what i could for these guys, i feel i have done may part as anyone has. one more thing, in my opinion, i think these guys with the ford trucks should share some of the road expenses, being if that they never went out, and we waited a day to get our soobs, there would be little or no damage to the roads. how can the edge of a field be a roud? put up a street sign and call it one. see you in desmoines

Midwest Subaru Meet-April 24th and 25th starts 24th at 11AM
well it looks like i made it out here to eyesore. sorry, no van and trailer, but we did get the turbo wagon running. sunday i am going to try my luck at doing the HEAD GASKETS on the sedan, and if i got it to run, sure i'll drive it back! i brought some parts, i hope to sell enough to make about 50-75 bucks, as i will need a little extra flow to drive back one of these cars. would anyone have a mounted tire on the rim? i brought a pair of ea81 fenders from out west, 1982. i have a pair of ea82 wagon headlights, and a pair of sedan taillights. i also have an ea81 wagon taillight, passenger side, 1982, and the bezel for both sides. i brought the turbo crosspipe for archemitis, i left it with mcbrat. so here we are in a TRASHWAGON SIX!!

Last year Dual Range Wagon made?
i would say 89, since that was the last year for GL. i myself had an 88 gl wagon dual range. 89 gl-10's all were full time with lsd's, but i dont think there is a dual range full time besides the RX, as a standard option anyway.... an 85 or 86 i have been told are the best for off roading with their gearing.

i found a local guy with 7 soobs, 5 of them need work. if i could make some quick 100 bucks, we will have eli's dad drive the van, put my car on the trailer. we will go to des moiunes and drop my car, and the van will take the sedan back to butler, we will continue on to the meet, and try to take the wagon back on the way home

Midwest Subaru Meet-April 24th and 25th starts 24th at 11AM
im gonna have to pull this one off by the skin of my teeth. last week i realized that i cant afford to go. this weekend i came into some money to go. i have to be to court the following monday now all i got to do is re-coordinate with all those who thought we backed out. the plan is to come in a big red van and a trailer, but if worst comes to worst, we will come in a trashwagon six loaded down with parts for everybody. the boss may end up saving the day, lets see how this goes.............

EA81/EA82 FRONT brake interchange?
either hub will bolt up to either rotor, but the spacing will be wrong. explore knuckle or strut swaps for this idea

efi starts, but dies immediately
ok if you were to hotwire the pump and it still runs, then the following quote below would be the problem. makes sense to me.
-
82 gl performance boost
an ea82 will fit in there, and if you dont mind wiring, make it a turbo! ditch the auto and find your favorite 5spd. if its a full time or from a turbo, you will have to as everyone says make custom axles. or do an ea82 suspension conversion and use 25spline turbo axles. or even xt6 5 lugs and its axles.

Road Trip II: TrashWagon's RETURN

Midwest Subaru Meet Parts swaps?
i may have a couple opf odd dookers for a carb. i have a crosspipe for archemitis. I'll just bring my whole stash and let you all fight over it!

efi starts, but dies immediately
sounds MAF related. unplug the wire to it and it will do what you describe. is the fuel pump coming on? my mpfi turbo will kick the relays, but no pump, i had to make a toggle switch. the problem is between the wiring between the relay and the pump

EA82 Belt Size
take the old belys with you to the parts store. there are tree different setup that i have seen. there is the round compressor with the alternator outboard there is the square compressor with the inboard alternator, and outboard alternator those models with the INBOARD alternator use both the SHORTEST and LONGEST belts of any setup

The fun begins(update)
i used the pushbutto for 2 reasons. one, its convenient for use of the button between stretches of gravel and paved roads. two, i forgot to get the shifter linkage from tom when i picked up my parts! the xt's shifter was different, so i kinda had no choice to do different. but since you got one out of an ea82 body, i can agree with your shifter choice. and tom liked the xt shifter handle anyway, so i told him to keep it. good deal, i figured you woldnt have done all this without knowing if your parts matched to begin with. easy work for a 10 day deadline! i did all my ej motor and 5 lug/full time setup within a week, including the adapter plate fab.... just to have it sit with the ecu a rats nest. but i got the rx motor in the car so i can drive it, save the ej motor for an other adapter attampt, or for use with its automatic in a hatch and modified suspensions!!!

a good deal between ourselves (TRASHWAGON SIX's resurrection)
trashwagon SIX is back in full action. we are now poweredf by the recently acquired RX motor, carb bottom end and ported turbo heads. i used the cherrybomb exhaust from trashwagon 5 and put it on the down pipe. i had to connect the fuel pump tp a toggle, as the fuep pump circuit quit working after the first couple of times starting the car. the relays come on and all, so the problem is the wire between the relay and the pump. i am using an spfi fuel pump, it works good for driving, but sometimes it cant keep ip with HARD acceleration. i am running a single row radiatopr, i have a 2-row but it has no drain plug. the car has a tendenct yo get warm if it idles too long, or you try to do some donuts, but i never installed the clutch fan. it does fine for general driving this way. but i will put in the clutch fan as a failsafe. the only power and exhaust issues now are the exhaust gaskets at the heads, as they keep blowing out. this time i will double stack with new gaskets, and silicone. i will replace whatever studs if i can. i have 2 speaker boxes and 2 amps in back, a pair of 12's qith a 250 watt amp, and a pair of 15's(only one works) with a 4channel bridged 250 watt amp with built in crossover. i have a pre crossover and bass boost unit in line before both amps, the 12's are pushing the lowest vibes and the 15 hits all the percussion. i want it the other way around. all this is connected to the rear right speaker plug, and the high input for the xover inline unit. for a stereo i am using the stock cassette, and a tap3e adapter and a portable cd player. sounds pretty good. its not about the quality of the equipment but rather how its all set up. i got my neon light that bumps to the music. i mounted some blue lights for ambiant glow, one under the steering column and one IN the dash vent. i will put more under each door handle, and some ling ones under the kick panels in front, and under the front of the rear seats. this car is mostly complete, and more lights and a trailer hitch later, i will be re-working trashwagon 5. the 5spd transd works freat, the gears are spaced apart, but the 5th gear is fairly low with te 3.9 final gear. but the gearing will be right when i put on the xt6 wheels, right now i am using legacy 14's till i get the 4th xt tire mounted the 4wd conversion sedan will lend its axle one each to the 86 sedan(the subaru alliance vehicle) and the trashwagon 5. the rx now sits with no motor. i will use the RX body to mock up an ea82 standalone spfi, meaning that i have an spfi long block with carb heads, and an spfi intake, ecu, and coil, maf that will be designed to come out with the motor, for spfi conversion purposes. this setup will use the RX's fuel pump and fuel lines, and the pump will be on a toggle swith to override the disty output for the ecu
