  1. of course instead of getting a 32/36 DGEV you could always grab a 32/36 DFEV. (has the choke on the opposite side.) If anyone is interested, I have a DFAV. (reverse side choke, water assisted choke. more reliable than electric choke, some have mentioned. is correctly jetted for our little subes.) email or whatever if anyone is interested.
  2. engine manfiold ECU wiring possibly fuel pump, if the GPH/PSI is different between the types of fuel systems... I don't know and I'm too lazy to look it up. As far as I know, the MPFI EA82 has the injectors in the manifold... so you wouldn't actually need to tear the engine apart or even take it out. Unless you wanted to rebuild it. And the SPFI block has higher compression to it, so to MPFI an SPFI block isn't at all bad. Later on, you could swap the MPFI ECU for a turbo ECU and add the turbo/related parts (resulting in a 9.5:1 CR EA82 turbo engine) Which has been done. (actually, was a turbo engine with switched pistons. same idea)
  3. screw sugar, put a ton of napthalene in his tank and make his engine fry to hell.
  4. um, a forum search would bring up alot on this topic of already covered material.
  5. downpipe? then you mean that the XT is an XT Turbo GL?
  6. um, probably won't... but most ASSUREDLY the front part for the headers won't work. that's a 6cylinder engine exhaust. The parts from Y pipe back might work.
  7. from what I have heard, the FWD Carbs are the ones with most of the solenoids and all the crap. They run ultra rich and then the solenoids and the computer tunes that down. The 4WD ones i hear aren't hooked up that way, and it's for easier tuning. I would say either rebuild your current carb, sell it to me, or buy a weber kit for your car. As for manifolds, the EA82 manifold is slightly larger inside for airflow, and the carb mount is a larger opening. ( better for the weber ) Manifolds will swap, but require some work!
  8. Super Beatles are WAY WAY light, and any subaru engine that is built even modestly would make that thing kick rump roast.
  9. When I was redoing my exhaust, some persons mentioned "Just do straight pipe back to cherry bombs... they count as mufflers, and it shouldn't be too loud." Well, you couldn't be in the car (windows up OR down) for any amount of time without thinking: "Is my hearing damaged?" And then it finally happened: I knew it hung too low... but man... one of the cherry bombs came off while I was driving. Thankfully I was out in podunkland and it was near midnight. So I drove it home. Now, I've got straight pipe with no mufflers, but I've got about 6' of 1 7/8" OD flexible exhaust tubing, and it is WAY quieter. MUCH more backpressure as well. Still sounds like a harley. It actually will fast idle correctly at cold start up, and idles where I want it to, so this is all before the big test drive. I say I still need a cat or two of some sort... a good Y cat would work, but mine is ruined and not worth salvaging. Anyhow, I at once was curious about the flexible exhaust, but, now that I've used it and heard it, I don't think it's all that bad. I also used new flanges and some 90 degree pipes and welded some, and clamped the rest with exhaust putty, ect. Sounds mean, hope it runs good too.
  10. with an XT, I don't think there would be any problem trying to put an EJ series engine in. new mounts, and all of the driveline for the EJ series would work best. you could do it! Imagine your XT with a 2.5L turbocharged WRX STi engine.... mmmmm.....
  11. I used to have an SPFI tube off the carb, I think I can make this work.
  12. a plenum off a EA81 turbo engine will fit EA81 2bbl hitachis. If the EA82 turbo plenum is a different size, then that might fit the EA82 hitachis, otherwise, the neck of the EA82 carb is bigger then the neck of the EA81 carb and it won't work. But for my car, there are no under-hood clearance issues. Ijust have to cut the rubber tube a little bit so that it's shorter and the bottom of the plenum will actually touch the neck of the carb. I measured it that way and it was fine.
  13. oh, and yeah, it sounds like a #$@!'n truck. I need to replace exhaust gaskets and get some sort of mufflers to increase the backpressure a bit, decrease the sound a little bit, increase scavenging, but not hurt the tone of the sound. That should be interesting.
  14. So, it was a long and adventurous battle with the hatch. About two months ago, it began with my EA82 manifold and carb swap. problem: manifold doesn't fit correctly. alternator bracket is in the way, the water pipe on the back of the manifold has to be cut, and some tweaking with the distributor has to occur. too much work for the weekend I started it all in. problem: the carb was from an EA82 FWD car... it has all the emissions stuff and all the feedback stuff, whereas I hear the 4WD version doesn't rely on stupid switches and the 02 sensor to work it's A/F metering system. WAY TOO RICH. problem: crossthreaded a bolt. solution: replace head. problem: water in oil. problem: oil in coolant system. problem: need to pull engine. solution: Pulled engine, want to replace heads. problem: heads I want to put on need to be cleaned. extra delay. solution: let a friend clean them. solution: rebuild engine, put in new clutch assembly. problem: needs new exhaust studs. problem: exhaust doesn't really match up, needs that extra spacer because the AIS was takin out. solution: flanges as spacers, and a gasket between the head/flange/pipe. problem: car dies problem: carb is bad problem: fuel pump dead solution: replace pump, replace carb, rebuild replaced carb, rebuild vacuum line system for the rebuilt hitachi. (not as scary as one would think!) problem: exhaust sucks solution: build custom exhaust. straight pipe 2" to Cherry Bombs. $110. That was last night. Drove her around some, adjusted some stuff, drove her home. This morning, adjusted throttle cable and mount, and idle and everything. Runs good, but I need new gaskets and need to retighten the exhaust down for a tighter fit. problem: axle blows itself apart and makes loud noise, right after passing by two cops in a cop car, and my exhaust is not really "cop friendly", neither are the stripes on the hood... and you can see little red glasspacks under the car about mid way... hehe. solution: I'm at a chinese place, order some food, spend time with the girlfriend, call Andrew and ask for some help. Tomorrow, I go and replace the dead axle. it's been a fun last two months without my car, what's *one* more day? PS: this is my only car and I rely on my girlfriend for drives to work.
  15. actually, as I remember it, the axles are the same spindle count and match up, but the EA82 axles are longer because of the body shape and location of all of the drivetrain stuff is different. FWD transmissions are the same, and can be swapped between EA81 and EA82 designated cars... but the axles are longer or shorter, depending on which you're going to. Sorry, forgot about all of that.
  16. hey guys, I know why the hatch don't wanna run too well. check the garage floor for a 2bbl carb gasket. yeah, that's why. It's up in salem. Until then, I'm driving a '81 Datsun Z truck. Dual ign. baby! dual range 2wd/4wd 4 speed... hehe... debating buying it for $500
  17. the engine mounts are the same between EA81 and EA82, as far as I know. the EA81 is pushrod and the EA82 is SOHC. The EA82 into EA81 body is a little hard depending on the car, because the engine compartment may need some work to fit it in. as far as rods and cranks, you can change the rods and pistons out for ones from an EA71 (1600cc engine) and get more compression ratio, but I haven't ever seen anything on different cranks. Theoretically, you could turbo those carbs. They're good carbs, but I don't know of anybody with DCOEs on their sube. DG and DF (DGAV, DGEV, DFAV, DFEV) 32/36 carb swap is common.
  18. I thoguht about that this weekend... why can't we get roller rockers/roller lifters? Even the lifters would make it nice. Less noise. hehe. but EA81s don't have that problem like EA82s do. hehe.
  19. there is a turbo EA81 engine, it was stock MPFI (EA81T). Then there is the EA82T engine stock with a turbo (MPFI as well) There's been discussion on turboing a carbureted car off and on for a long time, and recently I've brought it back up... It doesn't look like it's been done to our subies yet, but I hope to change that. (EA82 engine BTW is overhead cam.) stock EA81 engine has 8.7:1 CR. the cam probably needs to be changed for something beefier, and a better breathing cam wouldn't hurt either. Then there is springs, and the rest of the drivetrain. As far as parts, Ramengines.com has parts listed for this engine for the airplane crowd, but it's expensive. Do a search of the forums to find more manufacturers of stuff. The EA81T engine has 7.7:1 CR, so you could grab those pistons if you needed to. Or put pistons in from a EA71 (1.6L) and raise it to 9.5:1. There already is a man with an EA82 that has pistons from an EA82 SPFI block in there. (9.5:1 for the EA82) and hasn't had much trouble with his car. As far as carb'd turbos... I say do it, I'm going to try in time if $$$ permits. PS: no '84 subaru has AWD. not unless it's been transplanted there from an EA82 RX, XT6, or Loyale. It's most likely 4WD or possibly FT4WD, but that would also have to come from a different model later year'd car. It's definately either FWD or 4WD if it's stock.
  20. the Holley might be a good idea. if it's a two barrel ford style, you could go grab a factory adapter from a Ranger with a weber... use the 2bbl to weber adapter upside down, and grab a weber to subaru adapter. You'd have no custom stuff needed, and it would essentially make a two barrel work on our subies. There's one in my town's JY. That's where I got my weber from. A 2.3L Ford Ranger truck. (for $35!) Anyhow, the weber is an easy carb to tune, and seems like a good choice because it doesn't rely on ten thousand vacuum lines to work correctly. (the idea of turboing a hitachi is scary.) I can always get an A/F guage to read my O2 sensor and tune it from there. (the only part of my emissions system still left on my car... hehe.)
  21. Well, finding a good EA81T or putting an EA82T into any given engine compartment would be a little hard. If I could get this to work, and sube with a weber could be turbo'd. All I have to do is get the extra money for the parts in a couple of weeks or so.... and go grab the stuff from a turbo XT.
  22. I think you guys missed the point... supercharging carbed cars, sure, it's done alot more often than turboing one. But putting the best of EA82 technology onto the best of what EA81 can do (the weber) is my idea. Something that any other sube owner could somewhat easily do... (for parts and price at least, versus everyone finding a judson or grabbing another blower) Put an EA82 turbo onto, an EA81 car that has a carburetor. People put the weber on the EA81, and it's a common upgrade. And it's not too hard to find webers, and it's not insanely expensive... If I could get this to work right, then this might become a common upgrade as well. Something that those with webers could do. I'm just trying to open up doors to something that isn't too hard or expensive and alot of people could do without a sh1tload of trouble.
