looks like i'm gonna be afoot here very soon

hm you might be able to sell it whole, but parting it out is always an option. -
FT4WD tranny trouble...noise!!

yeah check all your front end parts basically. -

uh, yeah. that might be them moving around, unhappy. I was going to say, it sounds like nothing like a tranny issue... maybe like something about your idling stuff (don't know about FI fuel systems much, but if it were carbed I would say, check your idle mixture.) -
have you messed with your stereo lately? When I first installed a new deck, there was an accessory wire behind my deck that was from the dash/tail lites fuse. I had to find it and cap it off so it wouldn't touch the body of the deck and blow the fuse. This is a possibility, but other than that, don't know what to say.

I've talked to people, and what seems popular is 1 7/8" ID from the heads down, to a Y, then 2" from there on out. this sounds reasonable to me.

but, doesn't exhaust diameters change depending on the breathability of the engine and the power increase? I think he's quoting a STOCK engine.

what about wheel bearings for EA81? how much do they run? I might need new ones myself.

I'm gettin all excited!
JonOfScio replied to JonOfScio's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I still can't believe I pulled a weber, jetted just right (same suggested jet numbers for EA81s) for $35! $80 for the rest of the parts, and it looks sweet. Used some cleaner and stuff on it. -

I think '89 was the last year. You know what sucks? ALL hatchbacks had EA81s. But if you order parts for '85-'89 hatchbacks at parts stores, they ASSUME it's an EA82 because it's after '84. So you get the wrong parts for the car, and the engine. Always order '84 parts. -
tee hee... my car will hopefully be running around by saturday, and I miss it so much... Last night I pulled the manifold, and recleaned it, and pulled off the valve covers. Tonight I pull the heads off the other engine... I'm going to use different heads. Along with that I'm going to start cleaning those, and trying to pull the engine in my car. Thursday and Friday night I'll do a little bit each night, and then saturday, New clutch kit, and my finished engine goes in. I'm considering polishing the heads and intake... but that's ALOT of work... and I could do some of that in the mornings... but still...

Best EFI Subee Motor...
JonOfScio replied to Salvage Brat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
EA82 FWD tranny is the exact same (except gearing ratios) as an EA81 FWD tranny. (4 and 5 speeds) Only things that chance between mounting them to the motors is the clutch disk, and flywheel, ect. With the right clutch disk and flywheel, you could easily make an EA81 FWD tranny work on an EA82 engine swap... or use an EA81 FWD tranny in an EA82 car. Axles have same spline count, just the EA82 ones are longer. -
valve springs... questions.
JonOfScio replied to JonOfScio's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm aware of valve float, and I was just interested in differences between springs. Most likely, if I do decide to get better valves (most likely won't change cam) I will go with the Ram Engines ones. -
Weber Installation - Choke, PS problem
JonOfScio replied to skeet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
or, you could always remove power steering... but hey, in a wagon, yeah, it's good to have. But I definately don't need it in my hatch, so that's why I've never bothered adding it. -
I've used NGK V-powers for some time, recently switched to Bosch Platinums.... I didn't notice any difference beyond $0.20 more for the Bosch plugs.

Are turbo valve springs any stiffer than carbureted ones? I can get new ones from Shucks, and there's different weights... one of them is lighter weight than the other (brand) and there's also Manual and Automatic springs... and then of course I can grab a set of hardened springs from Ramengines for $45 a whole set. Reccomendations?

Engine color? Requests wanted.
JonOfScio replied to JonOfScio's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had considered that... but seems like a WHOLE LOT of work. -
Well, my EA81 engine should be pulled soon. I don't have ANY vacuum lines except those directly on the manifold, so it shows a good amount of the manifold. Color should that be? Block? heads? valve covers? My ideas thus far are: 1. ford red entire engine... 2. keep manifold/block the same with red for the heads and black for the covers 3. same as two but rally blue the heads 4. rally blue the entire engine except the covers be black 5. same as four but manifold be orig. aluminum And ideas from the peanut gallery? While I'm at it... in goes new clutch kit, resurface heads, valve seal guides... new head gaskets of course... maybe springs if they don't cost too much.

If my car were runnin, and I didn't have to work tomorrow, I could swing by with some food/beverages and of course would love to buy some material off you (vids) Until next time.

I'm almost of mind to do a dual head swap and get the heads I'm going to use, resurfaced just for the hell of it. (of course, really blue paint job would work as well!) how much can you ask a shop to resurface without requiring modification of the intake system? (say, will .005" of of both be too much?) Who has had heads resurfaced? It's not too expensive, and I want my car to run top, so I might just pull the engine and go for it. (with of course, andrew's help)

Dual Carb Question/Weber question too
JonOfScio replied to PHATBRAT's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
if you have the manifold, they should be the same mounting as a normal EA81 Hitachi... so you *could* do a dual 32/36... but of course you might want to go ahead with the rest of the engine upgrade(s) to really get something out of this. I don't think a dual carb setup would really show it's full potential until people made the engine breathe better (better flowing exhaust, better intake system, ported... polished... good cams... ect.) -
Dual Carb Question/Weber question too
JonOfScio replied to PHATBRAT's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
the only problem(s) with dual carbs are these: linkage, how will you work throttle brackets? mechanical linkage, or two accelerator cables? need to split the fuel lines, fuel return lines... one of each for each carb. need either a dual carb manifold (RARE) or to get two single or two double barrel carbs and fab up your own intake system. need to run vacuum lines from both carbs/manifolds to even it out. you could do a dual weber 32/36 or a dual 34ICT, but you'd either need a complicated dual intake setup with interesting routing for the coolant, or to build your own manifold with two carburetor bases. either way, lots of time and/or money. If dual hitachi manifolds were only less rare, the world would live in harmony. (or at least, would be closer to world peace.) oh, and I took a look at a two barrel off an old Mazda... and it looked nearly identical in mounting of that of an EA81... but I doubt it's a good performance upgrade... looks like same barrels. -
YAY! My lift is in! - UPDATE - Installed the Tires today!
JonOfScio replied to GeneralDisorder's topic in Off Road
yeah, the weber just sounds cooler. and I notice my second cat sucks MORE air in, so without the silencers on that, that sounds good too. Even for just the sound(s) I can't wait for my car to be driving! -

JonOfScio replied to GeneralDisorder's topic in Off Road
hey man, I can't make it up on sunday, the hatch isn't driving yet... turns out it wasn't the manifold gaskets. It was the passenger side head gasket. Possibly the head that andrew put on OR the gasket we used. Either way, she's still got lots of water running through her... but at least I cleaned out the engine from all the oil and flush it out. It won't be running any earlier than next thursday I don't imagine. We may pull it and get two new gaskets, and some valve seals, and use heads from an engine with bad main bearings I was going to buy from andrew. Sounds like fun eh? -
Better seats for 84 wagon
JonOfScio replied to Tom63050's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Now, I had planned on doing this, but because the hatch isn't driving around (bad head gasket...) I haven't gotten to it. you could get a longer bolt and some nuts, and place the nuts between the rail and the front end of the seat. I was planning on maybe 1" or 1.5" of difference in the front. This might make it more comfortable. And yeah, I second all mentions of XT, RX, or generically EA82 seats... there are some comfy ones. -
That's about right. First off... it's a turbo. The more you engage the turbo, the more gas you use. Second, it's an Auto, not a manual. Thirdly, it's 4wd, not FWD. Even if you don't have it in 4wd Hi all the time... just having the linkage, diff, ect. wastes energy from the engine. (more weight too) It sounds about right.
