Hondasucks: How's the hatch?
Hey man, thanks for offering to help. How's it coming? Basically plug all the vacuum lines except for the most needed ones, just get it running. Then tomorrow night if it is running, drive out to my house and plan to be there about 8:30. I'll pay you for anything you may have racked up in the process and I'll drive you back home. in the morning I might go grab the XT seats and the wheels with good tires and the cool hubcaps. ($100 total, seats good, tires half tread) Hell, I might have a big enough check that I might just try to buy the WHOLE XT! He only wants $350 +/- $50 (only missing engine and exhaust) Later dude

NEED ADVICE? which is a better car a ea81 or ea82 ?? Whih motor is better?
the solenoids on my EA81 manifold stuck too much, keeping my mpg at about 20, when it's FWD, and I used to get 45 to 50 on plus... (89 octane)

The deal with sensors is that they deal with solenoids, and they have to regulate air/fuel ratio for the hitachis.... there's some vacuum solenoids that have different connectors, and they deal with on/off switches (like binary) for vacuum lines, so I think it's like this: (carbed car) EA82: two vacuum solenoids two air/fuel solenoids O2 sensor Oil temp sensor Water temp sensor EA81: one vacuum solenoid two air fuel solenoids O2 sensor Oil temp sensor Water temp sensor On some models of course... and then there are the cars without ECS/ECU/ECM. Mine is a ECU controlled carb. In either case, just slap the weber on, unplug solenoids, plug all the vacuum lines except for a couple (disty, and vapor canister, ect.) and take out the light that appears under the dash for "check engine" You might consider at this point a computer readout for the O2 sensor so you can see the air fuel mixture (correct tuning) and of course you'll need the oil temp and water temp switches in for your dash.

EA81 engine problem
I've had both electrical problems plague my car as well as stupid exhaust problems, so my guess is it's probably either a head gasket, or exhaust gasket...

Engine Oil Debate?!
I like Castrol GTX, hate Penzoil, use Chevron mostly... and don't seem to notice a difference unless it is synthetic, then my car eats it like I drink coke... I've used 4 quarts 20w50 with half a quart (16oz) of MMO, and this seams to be a popular one... mostly for the EA82 boys with weird lifter/oil pump problems.

weeeee... new stuff!
yeah, $100 for four wheels with tires, hubcaps, and two seats is NOT bad. anyhow, It's about "half a day's work" as I've been quoted by a couple people... I might redrill and tap th XT seats for my EA81 rail spacing, if I possibly can. That'd be the easiest... if not, then I might need to take drill and tap the floor to mount the EA82 rails... I'll "test-fit" them in and decide what I need to do.

weeeee... new stuff!
new stuff, thursday. Gettin XT seats in good condition, blue that matches my interior of my hatch! plus four 8 spoke wheels exactly like my hatch with 50% tread on the tires on them.... plus the massive wheel covers that have "subaru" on them. $100 total. Not too bad IMO. Man, you guys out there need to start parting out this XT, if he gets the engine running, it's out with the turbo and he won't need the exhaust, but everything else should be good... nothing's gone! come on guys, you know you want XT parts...

Exhaust backpressure
well, I don't know if a rag will stop the engine or not, but a friggin board of wood would. Plus, I don't know that you want to do that... if you're exhaust isn't completely 100% awesome, you might blow a gasket or hurt something. I say inspect the heads, and all the sections of exhaust from looking into them.

$#&^%$@%!!!!!!! Ahhhhhh!!!!
and oh yeah, got quoted a couple times, "someone revved it too high" so yeah, sounds like misadjusted valves that got the rod bent when the guy spanked the pedal.

$#&^%$@%!!!!!!! Ahhhhhh!!!!
russ, if you're not busy this saturday and my hatch is fixed, I'll drive up there with you. Make a boneyard run on the way/way back. Jus pay $5 or $10 or however much you can for gas.

Loyale Airbox Mod
I need to borrow a digital camera. My car uses an SPFI top mount hose (says Subaru FI on it) coming off my EA81 hitachi. Put a 4" chrome air cleaner adapter on it... ect. It runs good, and sounds good.

Any photos of rallyX 10/12/03?
I saw some cameras, and some digital cameras out there, so I'm sure someone will post something sometime soon. Just gotta keep this bump'd up there on the list. Dude, I love the hatch. Way awesome, great seeing it for the first time in person.

Will Late '80's GL Wagon Take EA82?
well, from my personal experience, the EA81 manifold fit on EA82s well, but the EA82 manifolds (will work) but require modification.

About to tear it apart, 87 RX. suggestions?
If I was gonna get a new cam, I'd go for a beefier cam... one made of more substance, with a higher lift. Get it made with the right duration you want. I think the stock EA81 can handle 150hp max, so I don't think the EA82 is much higher... and regrinding I don't think gets it any more Hp/Torque handling capabilities, just a different lobe. Make sure he says "heat treated" as well. don't want your cam busting after 10k mark. As for your clutch of choice, I suggest Centerforce, as they have a dual friction race clutch with a lifetime warranty, you burn it out, send it back in and get a new one. About $250 with EVERYTHING after shipping.... or get an XT6 clutch because it's made to handle more power. (Xt6's use the EA82 tranny, but have a beefier clutch)

Caboobaboobie's '79 Wagon (we all think) has an EA81 suspension. he can explain it.

EA81T into my 79 wagon
measure the engine first and then the engine compartment, but other than that, nothing too much in the way of $$, just time. but you know all that... idea = sweet. DUDE! I SAW AN SVX FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE TODAY! I ALMOST HAD A PERSONAL MOMENT! IT WAS CHERRY!

How the EA82 manifold and carb swap unfolded...
the problem with how I re-put the EA81 manifold back on is that maybe I didn't tighten them down enough, and I'm basically 100% certain my problem is more of how the manifold is placed on the motor than anything else. The problem with the EA82 manifold on an EA81 engine is that the disty doesn't allow much play, so you can't adjust timing acurately.
-
How the EA82 manifold and carb swap unfolded...
Well, some bad news. I got it all done, fitted on, and running. had a hard time idling, had little power. When I first got it on, my disty died, so I replaced that, and now when I put my old EA81 manifold and carb back on, somehow, I have white exhaust. I don't think my heads are cracked, but you never know, and I can see water leaking slowly from the back of my engine when I look under the car. Did I accidentally hook up some water stuff to my intake? I'm not driving it right now, and it's at Andrew's house. One way or another, we'll get it fixed, there is a spare engine I was going to purchase from him, so we'll be okay. got a spare engine for parts, it just needs new bearings, so we can use the intake and the heads if needed.

Help: Need Pics Of Ea82 Carbed Engine!
I need pictures of all of the vacuum lines, the carburator and all of it's lines, and the disty lines. That's like four or five pictures. Anybody help a guy out?

the EA82 manifold and hitachi swap (onto EA81 block)
well, it's not going as planned, but it's better than... NOT going. As soon as I had gotten everything to the point where I wanted to test the engine, it ran a bit, ran pretty muscley, with what sounded like some vacuum problems. turns out after that, I went to start it up again, and it wouldn't go... turned good, but the disty died. So I got that replaced, and I just need to block off some manifold stuff and get a new heater hose for the manifold.... MMMMMWWWWWWAAAAAHAHAHAAAAHHHHAAAAHAHAHAHAAAHHHHAHHHAHAHHAHHAHAHHHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAAHHHAAAHHAHAHHAHHAHHAAHAHHHHAHAAA It's a much bigger carb and a little beefier manifold, on top of this, this is my first carb OR manfiold swap. cool.

the EA82 manifold and hitachi swap (onto EA81 block)
okay, so here's the story. By close inspection, the EA82 carb is a couple of things. Bigger Less confusing Not with as many vacuum lines I haven't measured the difference between the size of the barrels of the two carburetors, but it's definately evident that the EA82 carb is WAY bigger. (like 4mm bigger) the base of the carburetor to where it bolts to the manifold is relatively the same shape, only longer. the actual manifold itself looks beefier, but a little bit more simple... As for the thermoswitches, I've taken all of them off. Although without them my ECU will want to tell me something is wrong, I'm going to trick my ECU into thinking it has them... use the ones from the EA81 manifold only not actually working, just plugged into the ECU to tell it they are there and on. The main three wire connector (three female inputs) has one for the choke, one for the antidieseling solenoid, and one for the power valve. The EA82 has four wires... the same, only the antidiesling solenoid has two wires, a lead and a ground. I've wired the ground to the body of the carburetor and am taking the connector from the carb of the EA81 to match the three prong of the ECU's connector. I'll get pics as soon as I can, but it's not as complicated as it all sounds. in the end, this thing should be pimpin. bigger manifold, less vacuum lines running all over the place, new idle solenoids (not making noise), a bigger carb, bigger jets, and the sight of "Ford Red" or what is about the equivalent of STi red on a manifold. Can't wait to get the alternator bracket done. then there should be no obstructions in the way of the manifold... then hook up a couple things. EGR valve is disconnected, and head that has EGR hook up is blocked off. I run 92 octane gas, so this shouldn't be a problem, even at 8 to 12 BTDC. brake vacuum line two coolant lines, one from the block to the thermostat housing..., one from the manifold to the heater core. gas line in, gas line out three/four vapor canister lines (this will be the interesting part, I need to relocate the canister. and I need some vacuum caps. hook up my special SPFI hose intake system. includes all of the PCV system components, wired correctly. Sound like fun to anyone?
