I painted an EA81 with ceramic Ford gray, but sold it before I ran it. I don't know if it's been installed and run yet.

Fan Clutch broke water pump?
4x4_Welder replied to Bizangous's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have had a fan clutch die suddenly and take out the water pump, but that was a pretty oddball situation. The fan clutch is filled with a silicon fluid, which also lubricates the bearings that allow the fan to spin slower than the water pump. When mine failed, it had leaked out the silicon fluid, and the bearings seized while the engine was turning a little over 6k. -
Does someone have a driveline to measure?

There was a place down in Fife by the Port exit, but I think they closed. When I left town, there was a big "Space for Lease" sign by the highway. -
Maybe if you used split port turbo heads, so you could run four carbs, but then you'd have to set up a linkage, and airbox-

What's this.... In New Orleans????
4x4_Welder replied to samneric's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I used to be involved with the narrow gauge railroad there in Alna. Actually, the property I lived on in Weeks Mills was one mile from the Weeks Mills Wye, and the branch to Winslow ran through my backyard. I spent hours out there on mountain bikes, cross country skis, horseback- Can't really do that anymore, Google maps is showing a bunch of new houses, roads that weren't there when I was a kid........... -

The iced white pine cone and tassel- the NEW state flower for Maine! That's not quite as much ice as the previous "big one", and I can see you're still online. Did you loose power at all? I still remember hearing the transformers popping all around my neighborhood- Hear a pop that kinda sounded like a fireworks mortar, then about 15-30seconds later the lid would land in the street. Then the substation up the hill from the library went off, lit up the sky and you could feel the rumble in the ground. Wild night. -

Ok, centerline of the forward universal to centerline of the support bearing is 16". Distance between the universals is roughly 19", I couldn't get that one accurately though. Something about holding the flashlight and tape and laying on wet lava rocks............ -

I can measure the 4EAT one I have in a little bit, maybe tomorrow morning. Don't have a slip yoke on it, so I can just tell you distance between the front two universals if that helps. -

I was there for the 97 ice storm. I was living just off Western Ave in Augusta, didn't have power for a week. Could see the capital dome lit up real nice from my bedroom window, though- Hopefully this one isn't that bad for you. -

Supposed to get 2-4" tomorrow, which means 6-8" at work. I don't get my snow tires till Saturday I'll probably make up a set of chains from some old ones at work tomorrow. -
That's me and my son at five days old, July 2007.

I've blown them out with a torch on several occasions. I usually replace them with 1/4" bolts. -
rebuild or swap.
4x4_Welder replied to killshot_kustom's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Almost sounds like a blown headgasket. The lower end of these engines seems to last forever, so if you have decent oil pressure, I'd just change the head gaskets and have the heads at least checked. No reason to fix problems that aren't there. -
Turbo wagon with a hidden secret-
4x4_Welder replied to 4x4_Welder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It's assumed to be the failure of the front universal on the driveshaft. At least, mine seems to be this, with no slip yoke and a broken universal. I have a thread going in the parts wanted section, if anybody has this stuff, let me know, and what you want for it. -

I wouldn't trust it- Too porous of a casting, and full of oil from years being behind an EA82. Besides, I hate aluminum welding. The strange part is that it came off clean, no damage to the drum, no slop in any bearings, etc. I have to wonder how much this housing costs from Subaru......... -

Yup, had to buy groceries, I'll paypal you on Wed or Thurs. That fender has a big dent in it right there too, I might replace it but not too worried. That's about the only body damage on this thing, though. The story I got was that this damage happened on the highway near Boise, and the owner decided it wasn't worth fixing. This car came from WA, I wonder if the former owner is on here? -

As promised, here's pics. First, some really cool redneck jackstands. Free from work, and more stable on dirt: The piece that fell out at me: The hole left in the rear of the tranny: It also broke the mounts: -
Swap out to a 175º or 180º t-stat, and wire the fan to run all the time. You also seem to have enough room on the HC reading to give about 1/2-3/4 turn on the idle mix screw. CO and CO2 say you've got a pretty decent burn, that CO2 should be a little higher, though, maybe about 18%, but not something to worry about.

Didn't those engines use a little bolt in the middle under the head? I know all heads at least through EA82 had the bosses cast for this bolt still-

What's the car? If that's for the pair, it's actually not a bad price, and remans are a good route to go. It would suck to get the seals, get it all apart, and find the bores are all rusted or pistons damaged, and you have to get the calipers also while the car now sits. I'd suggest checking at partsamerica.com, they ship, and are usually a lot cheaper than Pep Boys.

EA81 perf parts
4x4_Welder replied to Twitch de la Brat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Let me go peel the stickers off my Fel-Pro kit and write racing on the box- Not really any need for that sort of stuff, at least without addressing the fact that EA81 heads don't flow well. Then more air coming in, more exhaust going out, and by the time you're done you still aren't stressing the factory designed internals.
