89 GL Turbo, new radiator and flushed system- I keep having an issue with the cooling system. Not overheating, not even moving up on the gauge really. It's just that when I get on it a bit, it starts dumping coolant somewhere on the top of the engine, and it's not very visible. I did replace the upper coolant hose to the turbo, and I am sure that's not leaking. It doesn't seem to be coming from the thermostat housing, or the intake either. Is there something else I am missing? FWIW- Getting on it is briskly accelerating from ~35 to ~75, flat road. Also, is it as much of a PITA as it looks to change that lower coolant hose on the turbo?

Want me to come take a look at it (assuming TF, ID)?

I'd like to get 4-low working

Is it really worth it to split the gears like that? I never had much luck with that on my Hatch, I'd just run it in low through 4th, then hit it into high range. I could actually get onto the highway like a modern car, and it was fun to pretend I had a 5speed. -

Wow, I got ~22 on the last road trip with the turbowagon. Had my wife, kid, and three large dogs, doing 75-80. I don't think I could maintain anything over about 60 without boost. Auto, AWD, and subpar cruise. I think there's a bad check valve or a leak in the vacuum reservoir somewhere. -
Gonna need Portugese as well...

Auto to manual conversion
4x4_Welder replied to 4x4_Welder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hmmm, so I'd basically have to find a GL10 or RX 5speed, maybe even a parts car so I have the stuff I need. This is basically a family highway car, I drive it to work some of the time and my wife uses it for grocery runs, doctor appointments, etc. I did, in the beginning, decide that the first component removed would be the first one upgraded. I do think the inner output shell or shaft got a little bit of a bend to it when this thing came apart as well, since it does have a rhythmic vibration at highway speeds. I do need to replace the rear output sensor, since it got cracked and rubs the outer output shell. Subaru wants something like $360 for this stupid little thing, the whole 5speed conversion would be cheaper. Any thoughts on the computer? -

Ok, after all the crap I went through to get the turbo wagon on the road again, it started leaking pretty bad from the transmission front seal. So, I'm going to keep dumping the oil in and collecting parts to put a 5speed in it until I'm ready. The EA82T actually seems pretty healthy, it seems to have gotten new head gaskets within the last couple years, burns no oil, no cooling system problems, and generally runs ten times better than I ever expected, so no EJ swap plans just yet, unless someone sells me a running wrecked Legacy......... My intention is to put either a single or dual-range 5speed in, but there are a few questions: Can I yank the 3.70 gearset out of this 4EAT and drop it into a manual case, or do I have to swap the rear out to match? How do I work around the transmission computer, do I just kinda pull that harness and bypass the neutral switch so it'll start?

Done that dance at a certain Subaru dealer located on the Kitsap Peninsula. A lot of going back and forth on something not being the "right" part for my car, but that's what I wanted, etc. The counter person makes a world of difference, the guy at Canyon in Twin Falls is pretty well on it. The only thing that upset me was that they only had one exhaust gasket in stock :-\

Relay mod- Using the existing headlight switch and wiring to trigger two relays behind each light, getting their power straight from the battery. Makes the headlights much brighter, and makes the wiring and switch last much longer. I do have two questions, though- How long can you run them before the battery dies, and Is that brush guard PVC? -

Cant get rid of idle miss

It sounds like a vacuum leak. A leak at one end of the intake will only affect the cylinders at that end. -

Why not? There's a guy on Chico Way near Silverdale that has a Slayer one- -
Don't know about the power steering, but the flywheel will go on it. You have to clearance the EA81's bellhousing just a bit at the bottom, and leave off the bottom inspection plate, then use the EA82 clutch too. I think the y-pipe fits, but it may use the other set of holes.
-
Yeah, but you'd have to crank the top up like three feet to stand a midget up in it. They'd also have to do a rear pop-open tent under the hatch so you could lay down.

Weird to see someone else here in the valley- Not sure how much longer I'll be in the area, though, I'm trying to move to Rexburg area. I did fix my exhaust leak today, it turned out the gaskets were not blown just yet. The up-pipe broke right at the turbo flange, but it was a clean break so I just welded it back together. It sucked to do that, since I was hoping for that sort of a failure after I had money and materials together to do a nice stainless pipe and maybe a TD04. Maybe next time it breaks. At least it's getting good boost now, not far off idle either. I did have an adventure today, though. I was on a parts run from work, going down my favorite little scenic byway, Murtaugh Road (down 500ft through a series of hairpin turns, across the river, then back up again): http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&ll=42.497352,-114.151168&spn=0.018416,0.04549&t=p&z=15 I was all set to have a nice little pseudo-rally run, when I get stuck behind this boat of an SUV wobbling through there at 20. Finally get back up to the top, and I turned down the road towards Murtaugh, and hear a pronounced pop. The cabin filled with acrid smoke through the shifter hole, all I could see out back was a cloud, but it still ran smooth. Limped into the hardware store, and it had blown the coolant line to the turbo. Fixed it, let it cool while I picked up the parts I was after, filled it, and proceded back to the shop. I didn't dare flog it up the hill, since I needed to see if my new hose held. It just really pissed me off, since I couldn't have fun going either way through there, and it's a fun road. I flog my Courier through there, kick the rear out on the turns, pretend it has more than 90hp. -
Sure, jump on the 89 GL bandwagon now.......... Not a bad deal, at least they put the mounts in those cars to fit the 4x4 stuff.

Ok, I have a dumb question now- I know you're supposed to connect the two green plugs under the steering column to check the timing, but I pulled the panel off and- No plugs. Am I missing something here, in the wrong spot, or...........? -
Ok, that's probably it then. I'll have to do that tomorrow, need to do a few other things in that area anyways.
-
Yeah, a touch high. I sold one with everything to install it in an EA81 car, including a fully resealed EA81 that had been torn down to nothing, cleaned, and inspected for $400. Post a want ad, see if someone will meet up with you.

The oxygen sensor plug came off it's wire on my EA82T. The only loose wire I can see off the harness is a white wire with gray jacket, does this sound like the right one? I'd like to get the closed loop portion of the EFI working right.

Yup, it blew the front universal and ripped the rear housing apart: Got it all fixed up, though. New housing, made a bushing and crossmember, and threw it all back together. It needs exhaust gaskets, but aside from that it's not bad. I think I'm just going to cut up some aluminum sheet to make the gaskets, since the fiber/metal ones SUCK. Maybe I should make more than just what I need- -

Did it loose the front or rear drive of 4x4? I have heard and been warned of stripped outputs on these. I have also heard of people running these in 4x4 as an RWD for years with success. I'd lock it in 4x4, and then get under and try to turn the driveshaft. -
Ok, I went and got tires put on the wagon today for it's test drive, so I figured it's picture time too. I haven't washed it yet, but not bad for a $200 car, eh? I picked up a set of Hakka's in Boise back just after I got the car. Little late for studded snows, but they have about 95% tread. On edit: I just realized you can plainly see my neighbor's ultra-gay mailbox. Gotta love personal expression. I'm gonna make a big Metallica one to counter it.
