3at to 5-speed question..
Meeky Moose replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well guess i need to start looking for a donor car.. bah.. if the damn wagon wasn't so nice, i'd junk it... -
hehe your hatch should fly.. drove mine from dc to baltimore the other day 80+ without any probs, thats with it being all stock.. the 4-speed lets the engine run at 3700 rpms at 80 mph.. hehe and i got 32mpg doing it, lol..

Horrific Gas Mileage, Or Broken Gauge?
Meeky Moose replied to Skipper47's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i'm pretty sure that the ea82 wagons had 16 gallon gas tanks, and the ea81 hatches had 13 gallon.. you mileage does stink.. the wagon i just picked up went 200 miles on a tank, its sittin on E now.. and that sux imo.. but my check engine light is on, and the 3at trans slips like a pig, so i understand why i get that mileage.. and subiemech.. the loyale's were pretty much identical to the ea82 DL/GL wagons.. ea82 spfi, etc, etc.. legacies were totally different... so his post should be here.. just not too many folks on this side of the board like the loyales because they are basically a DL with air conditioning... my old turbo wagon got 34 MPG and its had 290k.. but i've never really had a spfi ea82 car before, so can't give ya a real good estimate of what it should get.. -
are the driveshafts the same length between the 2 tranny's? or do i need a driveshaft from a 5-speed wagon? prolly going to have to buy another parts car to get what i need for this swap though
-
heh, just my opinion, but i'd drive the 130k engine till it dies then swap it.. my old wagon had 290k before it went to the scrapper.. i kept the engine cause it still ran good.. you may get alot of miles outa that 130k engine before it dies.. kinda a waste of time IMHO.. just keep your 75k engine tucked away somewhere for later down the road.. lol i have 4 engines at the shop... never have to buy another one again.

i'd say an ea81 hatch.. love mine.. see sig for what its got..

well after driving with the new governor about 200 miles, i pulled it out to inspect the gear.. its all chewed up again.. so the front diff is going to take a hike.. on top of that the tranny is a POS.. doesn't shift like it should and slips like a bastard. so now i get to find a 5-speed tranny/front diff to plop in it.. if i'm lucky maybe i can swap someone a ea82T for a 5-speed 4wd trans? "hint hint" so for now the RX is on the priority list.. its easier to swap an engine than a tranny, and i already have the engine.. hopefully i'll get my RX drug to the shop in the next couple weeks to get started on it.. the wagon was still worth what i paid for it, too nice to just pass up.. deffinitely going to get fixed, one way or the other...

drivin down the backroad to work, i came across a lady in a mercedes 300D that had slid off in a ditch and was stuck.. at first glance i figured i could push it out, but after a close look at the water i saw a downed power line sittin there.. so i got out the tow strap, hooked it to the wagon and her tow hook, and pulled her out.. guess i did my good deed for the day.. so the 4wd in the wagon is fine, nothing wrong with it, lol..

I have spark, fuel, and air. Still won't start

heh the ole ford had a new coil put on it.. it ran fine till i changed the plug wires 5k later.. pulled the coil wire out and the coil puked all of its internal guts out onto the inner fenderwell.. good thing i was at the parts store when this happened.. so coils can be turds outa the box.. happens all the time with a large variety of parts.. -
I'm a Subie owner! (Pictures Added)

good steal.. lol i've done that with my last 2 cars ($60 89 hatchback) and a ($600 88 gl wagon, 15 min fix really) got the hatchabck after me wife totaled my mint 89' integra anyways.. check out your cv axles.. owning an acura you should know what they sound like when they start to go.. if it is the tranny i would say drive it until it doesn't drive no more then replace it.. post in the marketplace about a 5-speed d/r trans, i know someone has one.. i have one but its being saved for when my auto tranny takes a dump entirely.. as far as swappin a tranny out its fairly easy really.. much easier than in an acura, lol.. just like pullin one outa an f-150 really.. umbolt it, drop the crossmember, pull the cv axles, unbolt the rear driveline, unhook the linkage, cables, etc.. and whala out she comes.. -
XT6 PS Issues again. also on XT6 board
Meeky Moose replied to benebob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hey ben.. when i bought that xt6 in oregon i took it in to the dealer and had them run the vin to see if that little black box had been replaced under the recall.. it was.. maybe its bad again.. just an idea.. and when i had it here and it was acting up the dealer here suggested the black box as well.. just some input on your troubleshooting.. PS there is a fulltime 4wd xt6 sittin at the scrap yard behind my house (2 miles away) it prolly got the little black box still.. i might be able to go out and get it if ya need it.. (car was hit in the drivers side too, so its not there for mechanical reasons) let me know.. -
ohh something else... mine runs extremely rich when its cold.. you can smell the gas from the exhaust.. prolly something to do with it.. lol and my check engine light is on.. maybe a bad 02 sensor.. gotta see what the code is for that engine light before i can do much about the idle miss..
-
dunno.. my new wagon does the same thing, miss at idle but once you give it a couple hundred rpm's it smooths out.. i figured the spark plugs are old.. going to change them next.. not sure what else would cause it..
-
heh i'm lucky here, they give fix it tickets for everything. lol
-
just so ya know my little 89 HB with the ea81 engine does the same thing.. at idle there is almost 0 oil pressure (indicated by the factory gauge) at 3k rpm's its between 45 and 50.. never had any problems with it..
-
foot of snow.. hmm lets see the belt froze from the ice..
-
my 88 gl wagon has a 3.9 open rear diff.. the only car that i know of that had a 39.lsd was the fulltime 4wd xt6 and even that was a special order option.. hunt around and you might get lucky.. otherwise the only way to get a 3.9 lsd is get a 3.7 lsd and do some modifying.. this summer i'll be putting a 3.9 lsd in my 88 wagon.. i just got lucky and know where one is at sitting on a shelf

Whats wrong with my XT6
Meeky Moose replied to subaru7291's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
02 sensor = oxygen sensor.. i'd sheck the maf as well and clean it real well.. -
ahh new stereo huh.. dbeen there done that as well.. if i remember correctly there is a wire or 2 that run the lights i'd try unhooking the stereo completely making sure all the wires are taped up temporarily and see what happens.. my guess is ya might have gotten a wire crossed or shorted in the process of wireing the stereo in..
-
my hatch did this same thing.. i looked for shorts, neer found any.. but i did figure out that the bulb sockets in the back for the tailights were gettin wet which was poppin the fuse got rain/snow/ice yet? hehe

the new wagon runs, its alive.. lol
Meeky Moose replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah, your governor worked great.. going to run it a few hundred miles and pull it out to see if theres any new wear on it.. hopefully the right gear oil in the front diff will prevent that.. -

after the below thread took place.. i dug in the glove box and found that at 74k it was towed into a shop for timing belts, reseal, water pump, etc.. so my guess is it prolly broke a t-belt at this point.. its got 148k and no other records of belts done.. so its prolly time to get it done, or break one.. thats a summer job.. crossin my fingers it lasts that long.. this slushbox is funky.. i now know how it got its name.. first one i ever had.. well pics coming in a week or so -
slushbox help please
Meeky Moose replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well i took it out for a drive.. 30+ miles into town.. after it warmed up and i filled the tranny to full (quart low) it shifts at the right times, but real sluggish... maybe it was just because it was low on fuild and cold still, dunno.. no smoke out the tailpipe at all.. but it was low on fluid.. only thing that smokes is some little leak on the crossover pipe.. so ya stop at a light and it looks like the car is on fire, lol i think every soob i have ever owned has done this at some point..
